Today I began preparing London clay for next Sunday’s drop in @stuartroadallotmentsociety Open to all allotment holders who want to pop by and have a go. This will be the first step in a series of interwoven clay based workshops during my time as artist in residence. My first couple of days as Artist in residence @stuartroadallotmentsociety I’ve taken a few pieces of work along from previous projects to help me settle in and focus on a starting point. As well as foraging some great pieces of cherry wood. 🪵 Yesterday I arrived resembling a drowned rat having cycled there in the rain and today there was a huge clap of thunder shortly after walking into the hut, so I’ve not been able to walk the entire site yet. Here’s the last canvas swatch dug up from my back garden for Soil Dialogues with @ecoartspace I buried this single piece on 8th Jan, to replace the original that had mysteriously disappeared. It was left it in the ground until 29th Feb 2024 and it’s the only sample that started to break down out of 7 others that had been spread across the garden and the allotment plot. The soil conditions have been extremely wet and quite cold throughout. But it could also be down to being left in the soil for a longer period of time. The next step is to hand the results over to @jopearlceramics who has kindly offered to take them to Florence. 🙏🏻 where her animated film Uneathered will be showing at the soil conference. And a pop up exhibition taking place in Florence curated by Patricia Lea Watts. This project is in collaboration with other eco art space members for the soil/textile art project. Soil Health from different Perspectives. Bringing together examinations and observations of soil health and the impact and behaviours of soil microbes on fabric. I’m thrilled to announce that in April I’m set to begin a three month residency @stuartroadallotmentsociety This site has played such a pivotal role in influencing so many past projects. So to be given the opportunity to work onsite and really be able to bed in to developing something new, was like music to my ears. I plan to use materials from the allotment where the hut will be my home for the duration. The clay soil will also be one of the first phases of exploration considering it’s already played centre stage in previous works. And I look forward to more conversations with @joerea410 about kilns. Soil Dialogues @ecoartspace This is the second batch of cloth pieces buried @stuartroadallotmentsociety on 16th December 2023. Dug up on 20th Jan 2024. The ground has been extremely wet, the soil is heavy clay and these pieces were placed in last year’s potato patch. There are similar marks from the first pieces buried in the garden. What surprised me was that all the fabric was completely intact. Particularly as I’d used calico a much finer fabric compared to canvas. The Allotment Plot is underway! Yesterday made a few test prints based on one of my first drawings. I felt like I was right back at the beginning…… how to keep the drawing simple and bold, keeping the character and wonky ness of the place. I want to make lots of prints and build up a wall of colours, marks, images. The questions in my head? How ‘illustrative’ should they be? How many? How big? What colour? Do I print to the edge? Is linocut fine enough? What distance should the work be viewed from? I want the work to have the charm of the place but not be too sweet. The allotment is full of junk and rubbish and stuff everywhere, old wheelbarrows and piles of compost. It is like Guston’s paintings and drawings but also I am reminded of Ravilious and Bewick. This brings me back to my original MA ideas of how you combine the idiosyncrasy of this place whilst referring to great art. What would Rembrandt do here? Or Van Gogh. I have a couple of months to work in this fabulous space and create an exhibition. Allotment drawing no. 9. Fineliner. I like the way this shed is hidden amongst leaves, sticks, and stuff. Rules at the moment… make the drawing from one point and start, no correcting or working with a pencil first. If it goes a bit wonky, work with it. No photographs! Draw from looking. Try and stick with line and find ways of describing without over stating. Get the marks in the right place. Part of the charm of this place is everything is crooked. Let the line wobble around. Each drawing to be about 2 hours.
