However, it will not hurt most beneficial insects, like ladybugs, praying mantis, and butterflies. Our latest garden installation in San Rafael is looking good and full of warm season veggie starts and seeds! This sweet family wanted a place to get the whole family involved in growing their own food. For this garden we installed with three 3-foot tall 4x8 @vego_garden beds and two 1-foot tall 2x4 beds for the kids! We removed the lawn and used Sonoma Gold gravel for a foundation, added an arch trellis for the tomatoes and two obelisks for growing zucchini and cucumbers this summer! Dodging rain today to get the garden ready for another garden tour this week. The rain has been wonderful. Yet. The weeds. Oh. The weeds. The flowers, though! Oh! How they have been loving all the rain! The daylilies have been especially lovely this year. Alas. They peaked last week, between the first garden tour and the second garden tour! Such the way it goes. I almost bought a garden sign last week that said “Peakus Lastweeksia” and now have serious regrets that I didn’t. I am sure something else will peak this week. Passionvine? Coneflowers? I harvested my garlic late in May and have been slowly working on dehydrating it… experts say to dehydrate garlic outside and. Yeah. I agree. The vintage typewriter table works great for keeping the dehydrator close enough to the house and away from the rain and yet still outside. I realized last night that I had an old chalkboard in my inventory that would be perfect for keeping up with what veg can be planted each month. I will still keep my binder and clipboard charts going but this - hopefully - will be a cute and practical quick glance way to see what I can get in the ground. I should take a moment to mention the hurricane force winds! Having been born and raised at one end of tornado alley and lived nearly 40 years at the southern end… I have never experienced anything quite like Tuesday morning’s storm! The garden, thankfully, seems to be pretty hurricane proof, aside from the gazillion mostly smallish size branches that came down. 🪱 Feed the soil not the plant 🪱 Some examples of what I’m growing right now, they all use the same soil mix and I’m just top dressing every 3-4 weeks with an in-house amendment mix and using worm castings as the carrier, putting that directly on top of the mulch layer and watering in! 🪴🚿 The bougainvillea and chili plant were both struggling a lot when I got them. They were bare stem with no leaves left, so I top dressed them with my amendment mix and some worm castings, then got them on good quality water and here they are, boooooomin 💥 That’s my favorite part about living soil, saving a plant and bringing it back to being happy and healthy! Pulled all my garlic today, as I am going away for a few weeks and the rust had taken over completely. A bulbs were a lot smaller this year, maybe due to the very wet season we had, or the warm winter we had down South, as the plants need really cold temperatures to develop. And then rust set in, causing distress to the plants. I’m sorry but I have ‘Munstead wood”-(Ausbernard) from David Austin roses (now retired in the U.K.) This rose has become very much a firm, fan, favourite or classic colt, rose amongst us super fans Named after the gardening home of world, famous pioneer, Gertrude Jekyll Munstead wood creates a large, bold statement shrub in my garden, comfortably, reaching 5‘ x 5‘ if not taller by the end of the year I have mine planted at the back of a border, surrounded by much cooler, colours, roses, like Litchfield angel, Boscobel , Grace and the lady Salisbury Beauty, colour and fragrance unfortunately come at a cost with this particular rose. It is utterly laced with barbs which are razor sharp. The growth tips are scarlet red with the foliage aging to a dark mat green colour which sets off the Deep Crimson blooms perfectly. flowering freely all the way through the summer. The blooms open completely flat and are tightly packed with hundreds of petals, which bleach out slightly as the flower ages, giving a deep raspberry ripple effect to the flower now, sadly discontinued in the UK it is still widely available through David Austin in other locations worldwide It’s the fragrance that sets this rose apart from its competitors, Rich , bold, fruity full of old rose charm, with notes of blackberries, apples, and sweet summer puddings. First and foremost I am a vegetable and herb grower. I am so lucky to have benefitted from homegrown veg for most of my life. Nothing, nothing pleases me better than plots of soil filled with food. I go to sleep thinking about it, I wake up thinking about it and sometimes I also dream about it!! 🙃 All my other gardening activities pay the bills, whereas growing food is close to spiritual, the earth my church. It seems to be a very different process now though to when I was a child shadowing my father. Pea moth, carrot fly, leaf beet miner, flea beetle, leek moth, blackfly, pigeons, slugs, mildew, rust... yet no matter how despondent I occasionally get I still can't stop. Hollygrove was my first substantial garden in years where I could produce crops on my doorstep and see all the beds from the windows. The surrounding fields were registered organic, but sadly not any more. I've been here 18 years, however, when I originally began to cultivate this patch it was quickly and devastatingly apparent that nothing much would grow. It has taken a decade and more of barrowing compost and shovelling manure to persuade anything edible from this ground. So many summers, small steps forward, giant leaps back, so many disappointments, countless joys. A day in the garden transplanting the tomatoes, peppers, eggplant and basil. I am starting melons, summer and winter squash, which I seeded directly into the garden beds, now that the weather and the soil have warmed up enough for summer vegetables to thrive. I also set out some cucumber and luffa seedlings I got from a friend. I have never grown luffa, so I read up about them and found out that they are not only used as sponges when fully mature, but are also eaten when very young and tender in many south Asian countries. Today from my garden, I cleaned up the blackberries and cut all the branches from the ground to 18 inches off the canes. Strawberries are starting to ripen and Jose and I each ate one. They are so much better than any from the grocery store! Thyme is blooming and attracting 🐝! Plenty of lettuce for a daily salad. With 16 tomatoes (4 different varieties) we should have tomatoes for salsas, snacks and sauces. The riding mower battery has been dead for months, so I'm having to use a push mower, at least on the parts inaccessible to the geese. This is the old pink chicken house I built a while back. It had a fenced garden in this area where I planted tea, hibiscus, bee balm, and other herbal tea plants. There was a second fence around that for the chickens to eat bugs and run over to the bigger garden area. They, instead, chose to fly over all 6+ ft fences or dig under them. They devoured the entire garden and moved on to the open area, where they were picked off by hawks, one by one. I had eventually removed the garden fence and put up bird netting, but it only helped if they stopped trying to escape. I gave up replacing them. Maybe I'll return to chickens one day. Meanwhile, this area has never had grass before, since building this pink building. Chickens are really tough on landscaping. This building will eventually get converted into an apitherapy building with my Solvenian hives. Today, I was just trying to access it. I also planted this honeycrisp apple tree that I picked up in Texas when I was visiting my oldest baby and only grandbaby. It's important to notice where shadows fall so you can see how much light a plant would get in a certain spot. This is tough on a hill, but I think this tree will do well. I hope to train the branches to fan out, so it can be a decent shade tree for geese that will eventually be over here. A bit of flower faffing on this grey Thursday afternoon. All of this was grown in my garden. Whilst I will never be the best at flower arranging, this has made me smile and its going on the dining table so it gives me joy every time I see it. I also got another, not so small, posy of sweet peas picked. I never used tonpick flowers from my garden, mindful that I wanted to leave them for the pollinators. However there is an abundance of blooms in the garden at the moment so I don't feel guilty for picking these. It has been a busy month over here at the House of 100 Projects. Between constant work on the chaos vegetable garden and tiny orchard and needing to repair the central a/c system, and dealing with severe weather here in North Texas. Plus a full time job and two small businesses. And family things. And cooking, laundry, dishes. Etc. I’ve been focusing hard on amending the soil that Home Depot delivered several months ago. 1,800lbs and it wasn’t what I ordered. The store said they would not come pick it up, despite the fact that no one here signed for it. They just dropped and left. The good news is that the costly process of amending the soil seems to be slowly working. I have sacrificial plants in the raised beds I used the soil in and they are actually taking off well. I’ve even spotted 10 little tomatoes on this micro dwarf tomato plant.
