One day Syon noticed a caterpillar making/going in its cocoon on the kitchen window. They both curiously observed it everyday. After exactly 2 weeks of waiting patiently they got to see a white moth (fall webworm) emerge from the cocoon. This is them playing with a different moth that flew inside the house when the door was left open and the last photos are of the moth who made its cocoon on the window🐛❤️
Birds of prey aren't very well-liked by other birds, who often end up chasing them away when they see them. Nature Connection Walk in the rain ☔! I've been faced with going outside when it's been raining multiple times this past month... As I was driving to my planned location.... I wondered about how In the past I would usually skip the walk and differ to staying indoors unless it's really necessary... The tamed story I used to tell myself is that I don't want to get wet, it's too cold or it's inconvenient to take an umbrella with me ... This isn't the first Viviparous Lizard we've seen at the Raven this year, but it is the first one I've photographed. Today's class of schoolchildren were lucky enough to get to see Ireland's only native reptile while they were looking for bugs in the grass, and managed to stay quiet for long enough to see it come into the open to bask. Slow growing tree bark, like in beech trees, forms a smoother surface to reduce potentially harmful insect numbers, but is slower to heal injuries, allowing bacteria to get in and cause disease. One of the young lads at today's school workshop pulled this mighty water beast right out of the pond, marking the first time we've seen one! This Water Stick Insect is named for its resemblance to terrestrial stick insects, but is actually more closely related to the common Water Scorpion (which is also not a real scorpion). Like its smaller cousins, this species is an ambush predator that uses its long tail as a snorkel through which to breathe while it waits for prey like fish to pass it by. It's only been recorded a handful of times in Ireland, so this is a really cool find! According to the @thewildlifetrusts honeybees alone are responsible for pollinating between 5-15% of our insect-pollinated crops! With native wildflowers and wild areas in decline and monoculture farms and pesticide use increasing, bees need our attention and protection. Here are 3 ways to support your local pollinators… 💪🐝 Provide water! 💧 Add a shallow dish of water to your outside space (especially in dry spells) to give bees a source of water. Adding pebbles or gravel to the dish gives bees a stable surface to drink from and can stop them from drowning. Provide bee-friendly plants 🌸 Lavender, Sunflowers, Salvias and Echinacea (which is also found in #JamuWildWater 😋) are all perfect, pollinator-friendly plants that will provide a rich nectar source for passing bees. Our first Orange-tip butterfly egg of the year, spotted by wildling 2. These tiny eggs are a joy to find, and actually quite easy for wildlings to spot when they know where to look. This is the ideal time of year to spot them. Here's some info for anyone that hasn't spotted them before: 🟢 First, you need to find Cuckoo flower (Cardamine pratensis). This is really common in the UK (and throughout the rest of Europe) anywhere with damp ground, so damp meadows, stream banks, damp woodland rides and glades. 🟣 Cuckoo flowers have 4 pale pink petals on upright stems (Picture 2 and 3). They'll usually have Orange-tip butterflies flitting about around them and feeding on their nectar (Picture 4). 🟠 The little orange eggs can be found on the stems just below the flowers. Who else missed the Northern Lights over the weekend?! 🙈 I may have missed them, but it did get me thinking… The Northern Lights are arguably one of the most breathtaking sights there is to see, but what about the smaller yet still spectacular events in the natural world like the sound of the dawn chorus at sunrise in spring, the smell of bluebells at their peak on a sunny day, or the sight of an illuminated full moon on a clear night. We live alongside countless wonders of nature that happen year round, but with life being so busy, so many of us don’t know they are happening or never slow down enough to see, let alone experience them. Imagine if there was a way to help people not to miss out on the wonders of nature, big or small, happening throughout the seasons… We’re currently undertaking research with 50 people from the Wylder community to develop version 2 of the Wylder app. One concept we are exploring is adding a ‘nature alerts’ feature to the app so that big and little moments of magic in nature are never missed! An example could be... ‘It’s a clear sky tonight where you live between 7-8pm. Get outside and look up to enjoy the full Flower Moon this May🌕’. Would nature alerts help you to connect to nature? I got to watch this male Vermilion Flycatcher (Pyrocephalus rubinus) repeatedly feeding his three fledglings in a Tucson park last weekend. Little did he know his little beggars were able to catch insects on their own when he wasn’t around 😁 I didn’t realize I’d caught this sequence until checking my photos a few days later. Shieldbug 💚 This mother green shieldbug lays interesting eggs, hexagonal shaped in bright neon green . Once they hatch, the siblings stick together for protection. They actually produce what's known as an aggregation pheromone - a chemical that encourages them to stay close. No Mow May is off to a great start, with new wildflowers popping up all around the reserve! This cuckooflower is a favourite with many insects, including the orange-tip butterfly who uses it as food for its caterpillars. It gets its name from its flowering period, which coincides with the singing of the cuckoo.
