Happy 5th anniversary to Always Be My Maybe, the winning romantic comedy in which co-writers and stars Randall Park and Ali Wong play Marcus and Sasha, childhood friends who reunite after a brief teenage fling ended badly and have different paths and relationships in their lives (he's still lives with his widowed father and plays in a local band and she's a celebrity chef) who decide to resume the relationship that was meant to be. . One of the best films I’ve seen this year and undoubtedly one of the best in the comedy genre is “Babes.” The film primarily addresses sisterhood and solidarity among women. In a world where hostility and competition between women are often portrayed through a male lens, it’s refreshing to see stories that challenge this false narrative. Ilana Glazer and Michelle Buteau, both known in the comedy and stand-up world, play Eden and Dawn, respectively. The characters grew up and studied together and, now in their 30s, maintain a close and supportive relationship. Eden, who is single, ends up getting involved with a charming guy and becomes pregnant from this single encounter. Dawn, a mother of a toddler and a newborn, becomes Eden’s main support in this new journey while simultaneously dealing with the challenges of being a second-time mom, professional, wife, and finding time for herself. The script is very well written and resonates with women who are experiencing or have experienced situations such as grief, single motherhood, postpartum depression, the guilt of never feeling sufficient, and the satisfaction of having a friend for mutual support. Throughout the film, there is a mix of entertaining moments with hilarious scenes, along with dramatic points and sensitive, truthful dialogues. The actresses’ performances are authentic and touching. I highly recommend it! Babes is at its best when it’s following the wholesome and often tumultuous relationship of these two best friends, unfortunately it’s at its worst when it’s attempting to be funny.. This review will be much more subjective than usual, as what’s deemed funny is heavily dependent on the individual. With that being said, I didn’t really find most of this movie funny. Babes follows inseparable childhood best friends Eden and Dawn, having grown up together in NYC, and now firmly in different phases of adulthood. When carefree and single Eden decides to have a baby on her own after a one-night stand, their friendship faces its greatest challenge.. To be upfront I actually liked this movie despite my rating for it, my main issue is with how little I laughed in a movie advertised as a hilarious comedy. I really did enjoy watching these two friends navigate this awkward time in their friendship and personal lives, I even teared up during one very wholesome scene between them. I think Babes does a good job of portraying friendship in adulthood and the adjustments you have to make as your responsibilities shift. Personally I wish the movie took more of a laid back approach to its storytelling, and didn’t push so hard for funny moments as often as it tries, because again I liked the characters and their dynamic, but anytime it went into a more forced comedic bit I was already cringing. If you are going in to see Babes I would just be prepared for a lot of bodily fluid jokes, diaper jokes, and a mix of the two. Personally I found the comedy pretty juvenile, and this is coming from someone with an incredibly immature sense of humor. But like I said, comedy is subjective, and people were cackling in the theater throughout this movie, so maybe it just wasn’t my personal taste. Unfortunately Babes didn’t do much for me as comedy, but I found the underlying story of friendship heartwarming enough for me to not regret watching. Personally I wouldn’t rush to theaters so see this, but I think it’s worth checking out on streaming if it sounds interesting enough to you.

The ride-or-die twist was a nice touch but it wasn’t really that impactful, things are becoming more and more predictable, and it’s almost too sad that the AI was revealed early on! I was actually rooting for it to win! Haha The interior design of the apartment looks so good as usual though! Also, I feel like it would drastically be better if all of the players would just come in right from the start and just battle it out. Come on, season 7! Let’s get creative! This is one of the best movies of the year. It was consistently funny and entertaining and most importantly heartfelt. Regarding the former, there were many laugh out loud jokes/scenes — my favorites being how much Upper West Side sushi costs, a reference to The Omen, and the scene around amniocentesis. The infectious energy and chemistry between the two leads also helped to elevate the material even more. In addition, there was a shocking reveal early on that impressed me with how bold of a decision it was, and the structure of the film was neat in how it follows all the beats of a rom com even though its central relationship is between platonic friends. The thing that sealed the deal for me and caused me to boost my score, however, was the ending. There are multiple moments where the film becomes genuinely and surprisingly heartfelt, and one scene in particular literally made me tear up. That scene used my favorite screenwriting tactic (delayed setup and payoff), too, so that’s always a plus. My only small qualms are that it doesn’t make sense as a woman living in New York to hook up with a random dude you meet on the subway that same day, and Dawn’s character was slightly inconsistently written with how she’s clueless about certain aspects of pregnancy/child rearing even though she’s already done it with her first kid not too long ago. Overall, Babes was an absolute blast at the movies, and it’s certainly the best comedy and funniest film of the year.

“Let’s go ruin a towel.” 7/10. The first few jokes were predictable, like the wet seat gag, which was sooo obvious. It felt like it dragged on too long. However, after that the humor was better, great even. It’s a movie that rewards you the longer you watch. Despite the rough start, the funny scenes made the movie for me. I especially liked the twins, the omen bedroom scene, and the big needle scene—my favorite part. There’s some profanity and raunchy comedy, which might bother some, but I actually enjoyed it. I say that ‘cause the movie deals with themes of pregnancy, sisterhood, and family—the beautiful and difficult aspects, and their impact on mental health. I think some people might watch it for those themes and not like the humor, but I felt the two elements worked well together, making it appealing to different audiences. It reminded me of “Scrambled” from earlier this year, which more people should have seen. The movie is quite messy and chaotic, which led to some unexpected good scenes like the random plumbing issues. So I liked that chaos. It was strange there wasn’t a nurse to help her to the 4th floor, though. I liked seeing Stephan James from “Beacon 23” and the doctor provided great comedic relief. The chemistry didn’t pull you in like the greatest girl-mance or romance ever, but the conversations felt real. The characters felt like actual friends. It didn’t have the strongest start, but the movie gets better as it goes, and I’d recommend it.
