@capelight_pictures @thelastkumite #serofamous #filmkritik #reviews #filmreviews #filmreview #martialarts #action #thelastkumite #mathislandwehr #matthiashues #billyblanks #cynthiarothrock #seandavidlowe #kirakortenbach #kurtmckinney #filmliebe

Saw the @amywinehouse bio pic @backtoblackfilm last night - I loved it! 👏💜I thought that @marisaabela_ was very convincing in the lead role and that the film was really well-written and acted. I’ve always enjoyed Amy’s music but didn’t go into the film knowing a lot about her life or story so I can’t really speak to the real-life accuracy of everything but I thought it was well-done and did a good job of showcasing the complexities of Amy’s life, journey and relationships, as well as her incredible talent and music. Very much a tear-jerker as well. 😢 Definitely worth a watch imo if you like her music or just enjoy a good #biopic. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️🍿 #weekendatthemovies #filmrecs #filmreviews #amywinehouse #amywinehousefans #backtoblack #backtoblackfilm #biopics #music #filmposters

REVIEWED! RISE OF THE PLANET OF THE APES (2011), directed by Rupert Wyatt, starring James Franco, Andy Serkis, Freida Pinto, and Tom Felton. The fast pace causes certain characters to go underdeveloped, but “Rise of the Planet of the Apes” displays some impressive VFX and proves it can make a solid character out of a chimp. 7/10 ⚠️ SPOILERS BEGIN BELOW ⚠️ The CGI for Caesar and the other apes really is quite impressive. It’s difficult to get CGI to work with characters or animals that have hair, like an ape, but Caesar always carries weight in the scenes he’s in, thanks in part to the use of motion capture. What’s something so smart about the apes’ designs, though, is that the VFX artists made a clear, but important distinction between the intelligent apes and the normal ones through the look of their eyes. Patrick Doyle’s score may be a bit cliché, but it does add to the film. The rapid arpeggiation employed in many of the themes speaks to the rapid evolution Caesar and the other apes undergo throughout the film. The quick pacing of this film has a ripple effect on the rest of the writing. Caesar and Will get enough attention, but many other characters are left barely developed to accomplish this. Caroline is a prime example. She gets the thesis of her character out without the beats to support it, and, as such, feels flat. Jacobs is the same way. Additionally, the time jumps in the first act can be rather jarring, and the ending wraps up far too quickly. Most of the actors in the film give rather flat performances as a result. Andy Serkis provides easily the most engaging performance of the movie, and he has about four words of dialogue behind the CGI of Caesar. The action of the third act is certainly compelling, though. It’s tense, since you’ll actually care about Caesar at that point in the film, and it’s been set up what the humans are willing to do to stop the apes.

THE STRANGERS CHAPTER ONE Horror Movie Review I don’t know what people do on their birthdays but I went to see THE STRANGERS CHAPTER ONE and it was not entirely disappointing. Start at the beginning - I absolutely loathed the 2008 original. Bryan Bertino had directed a few good horror movies since then, but for me THE STRANGERS was the epitome of what bad horror is about to - dull characters, bad decisions, lots of stalking, no action and zero body count. Why did I go to see a reboot? Well, Renny Harlin is one of my favourite directors of all time. NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET 4, CLIFFHUNGER, LONG KISS GOOD NIGHT and later DEEP BLUE SEA and MINDHUNTERS are some of my most watched films. So I was incredibly curious what he would do with a chamber horror like THE STRANGERS. There are good news and bad news. The good - Harlin manages to evoke the terror of isolation and imminent violence. The leading duo (Madelaine Petsch and Ryan Bown) are charismatic and have perfect chemistry, so it makes a difference when they are being hunted by a trio of masked psychos. But there’s also bad - the stalking quickly grows old and despite good pacing and some clever set pieces comes a realisation - the new strangers is almost shot by shot remake of the original. Including the awkward ending. If you choose to accept this as a beginning of a trilogy like I do there may be a lot of potential here. However I find the trio of masked strangers more annoying than menacing, and cannot wait for them to get their just desserts. Renny Harlin managed to breath in new life in this old concept, but it all depends on the rest of the trilogy to figure if it was all really worth it. PASHASFILMS SCORE: 7/10 #filmcommunity #filmreviews #pashasfilms #filmstagram #pashasfilmreviews2024 #rennyharlin #thestrangerschapterone

Terminator Genisys - M - 2015 Director: Alan Taylor Plot: When John Connor, leader of the human resistance, sends Sgt. Kyle Reese back to 1984 to protect Sarah Connor and safeguard the future, an unexpected turn of events creates a fractured timeline. Thoughts on movie: The first 4 movies did such a good job at sticking with a timeline and continuous storyline about the terminators and skynet but this movie just throws a big spanner in the works. We did not need a new look at Sarah Connor and more of a story about Kyle Reese. The first movies events don’t need to be touched and how this movie went about affecting that pretty much just means we didn’t need terminator 1. I didn’t like the next rebrand of John Connor but even just not seeing a lot about him and the resistance and more him just being used for his face. Enough with the bad and some of the cringe moments between Arnold and a few of the characters let’s get onto the amazing cgi. The standout about this movie is how good the effects are. The liquid effects get better and better each film and how smooth the transitions are from human to terminator. I was a little dissatisfied with the cgi Arnold’s and wish they just used scenes from the first film but understand why they wouldn’t. The action scenes were pretty good but the pacing of the film felt a little bit jumpy in parts almost like we were skipping key moments that were needed but also some slow moments that felt cringe and like they weren’t needed. I love the look of the machines they’re looking better and having more of an impact in each film and the helicopter chases and scenes with vehicles aswell as weapons are entertaining and enjoyable to watch. All together tho this movie is okay, it’s not needed, the characters aren’t great but the action and sci fi look awesome so definitely check it out. What were your thoughts on this movie? #QuickMovieReview THE GARFIELD MOVIE (dir. Mark Dindal) For the most part, #TheGarfieldMovie is exactly what you expected it to be. It’s a sparky, sarky, slapstick, shenanigans-heavy, predictable farce aimed squarely at kids but with a slight edge to it that should work for adults/parents. It also has a bit of heart to it with the father and son stuff which I wasn’t expecting and edges this above your average kid-friendly animated fare. Can’t say I warmed a whole lot to Chris Pratt’s Garfield though. Solid stuff all round. Score: ★ ★ ★

2,5/5 Punkte #thelastkumite #bluray #bluraycollection #movie #moviecollection #filme #filmsammlung  #filmesammlung #bluray #heimkino #bluraycollection #bluraycollector #moviecollector  #instamovies #instamovie #filmreview #filmreviews

I haven’t had a proper cinema day in flippin’ ages. Back at my peak, Unlimited card in hand, I used to be able to consume seven films in a day, but that’s harder to do now, partly as my local cinemas don’t show films quite as much from dawn to the middle of the night since the pandemic, and partly because it’s difficult to save enough films up to make a day like that! But on Saturday I managed four, starting and finishing at @campicturehouse and with a double bill at @lightcinema_cambridge in between, and the joyous effect of seeing two U-rated films in between two 15s. Popped into town for a bite of sausage for lunch, and then pizza and beer at the Arts bar for dinner, an impulse I’m going to blame entirely on Garfield. LA CHIMERA: Alice Rohrwacher’s woozy, Bohemian love story sees Josh O’Connor desperate to get underground in search of artefacts and lost love. Full of quirky moments and unusual beats it gradually coalesces into something tragic and beautiful. 9️⃣ IF: A sludgy disappointment of slow-paced storytelling and confused plotting. Ryan Reynolds desperately searches for something beyond pratfalls and only a moment of beauty featuring Fiona Shaw lingers. 5️⃣ THE GARFIELD MOVIE: Once you get past the oddity of Samuel L. Jackson voicing Garfield’s father and Harvey Guillén as a dialogue-free Odie, this has a frenetic pace and a decent amount of heart and should keep youngsters well entertained. 6️⃣ TIGER STRIPES: Amanda Nell Eu turns the onset of puberty into an all-consuming horror in this mixed allegory that has a handful of memorable images and winning performances from its young cast. 7️⃣ #movieevangelist #filmcritic #filmreviews #filmreview #cinemalover #cinemaday #lachimerafilm #ifmovie #thegarfieldmovie2024 #tigerstripesfilm

Movies 2024 - Problemista (2024; directed by Julio Torres) 🌮🌮🌮🌮 (4 tacos) Did not expect to end up liking this as much as I did! Problemista is an absurd, sometimes uncomfortably so, but pointed and ultimately touching comedy about creative types, immigration, living up to your potential, standing up for yourself, and connecting with someone who gets you. Sure, there are some moments here and there that feel like the weirdness is amped up just for the sake of being weird, but the heart of the story and the little threads of humor make it all come together nicely. A charmingly bizarre movie that once it clicks (or once the viewer gets the wavelength) it is impossible to not smile at. Julio Torres is deliciously weird in the lead role. He is walking this man-child tightrope that somehow finds a really good balance. You may have to warm up to it, though. As the film began, I found myself questioning choices that Torres made with his character, from the bounce in his walk to the semi-glazed over look on his face. That doubt faded pretty quickly once I was able to latch on to the movie’s wavelength. I found myself fully locked into Torres’s performance and hoping the movie would never end. I felt similar with Tilda Swinton. As we’re introduced to her character, she is overbearing and exaggeratedly grating. We ride that wave for awhile until something about her character becomes charming, too. There’s something about these two characters and their place in the world at large and each other’s universe that make them enthralling. I would like to think most audiences will fall for this thing if they give it a chance. The movie plays for one more night in Sioux Falls, and so far, has played to small houses. I hope that more people make it out to see this tonight at the State Theatre at 7:15 PM before it leaves town. Sure, it’s available on premium VOD, but there’s something great about seeing a gleeful oddball like this in the theater.

The Strangers Chapter 1. I didn't like the 2008 The Strangers, I didn't like it's sequel Prey At Night. Renny Harlin was announced as director for The Strangers Chapter 1, my interest happened, and hope that it is done right. And it is done right, plenty of style, the way a scene is filmed and framed involving the playing of a piano, one of the creepy images during this scene looks like it could be a painting, this part in the woods where two of the killers are framed in a way that is equal parts creepy and a love of the killers characters comes across, the jump scares are choreographed in a way that seems so confident, one of them early on is especially effective, a feeling of dread and hopelessness, when the characters are being hunted, the location of the woods, fog seems like a character itself, one of my fav scenes involving Madelaine Petsch's character Maya trying to hide under leaves. What adds to this in it's execution is, a scene hinting at the damage of the psyche, even making a situation a little difficult to watch, on purpose, which I am guessing will be gone into more detail in the sequels. When a shotgun gets used a few times, it's visceral. And a moment towards the end with the Pin up mask girl shows how insane she is in quite a disturbing moment. As far as the main couple is concerned, Madelaine Petsch brings a real vulnerability and likeability to her character, and I believed that she and Ryan (Froy Gutierrez) care for each other. They do have chemistry. Great use of Styx's "The Best Of Times" too. Really enjoyed this, and am excited for chapters 2 and 3. #rennyharlin #thestrangerschapterone #alanrcohen #alanfreedland #josedavidmontero #madelainepetsch #froygutierrez #brianbertino #horrorfilm #horror #filmreviews #film #moviereviews #lionsgate #lionsgatefilms #richardbrake #rachelshenton #gabrielbasso #emahorvath #matuslajcak #oliviakreutzova #letiziafabbri

Challengers (2024) 31% I guess the attempted draw of this #film is basically based on trying to prey on what some may perceive as taboo subjects. Such as a former Disney star ( #zendaya ) getting raunchy but if you've seen Euphoria you know this is nothing new. Also there is some gay kissing, which who cares ? It's just kissing. Then you have the love triangle or three way relationship or whatever you call it. All very shallow attempts to anchor your #movie with. Thus leaving me incredibly bored dispite some good directing and good acting. This film is just dull and uninteresting because it feels like it has no substance. #moviereviews #filmreviews

late night with the devil (2023) dir. colin and cameron cairnes, starring david dastmalchian, laura gordon fayssal bazzi 🌟🌟🌟🌟/5 (tragically, my tickets were virtual) review: the premise of this movie was everything i’d want a horror to be, found footage, unnerving, set in the 70s. pleased to report back that it lived up to the expectations i’d applied it- this film was really good. you’ve got to understand that i’m a big believer in horror being ‘campy.’ whilst i’m an enjoyer of newer horror like jordan peele’s work- i do believe there is still great value in horror being theatrical. the setting of this, a 70s late night talk show with a psychic medium, a non-believer, and a psychiatrist and her haunted little kid is a brilliant premise and they manage to make it work. one of my favourite things about this film is, given it’s based in the 70s, a lot of the effects are reminiscent of that time- a little rough around the edges and entirely unbelievable. perfection. this movie actually manages to be scary and the story isn’t one i feel like has been explored all too much, it was new and it was really fun. unsurprisingly for me, i was confused in places but not the entire time- i think that’s important for horror? you should spell everything out right, you should trust your audience is smarter than that. looks like i just made the cut. if you like horror and you don’t take yourself too seriously- watch this film and enjoy it. This drama film was unexpectedly dark, which surprised me when things took a turn for the worse. It also established Florence Pugh as a promising actress with her cunning performance as the protagonist. And this is a refreshing take on women in period dramas, being able to fight to achieve her own happiness, whatever it takes. All in all, this is one gripping movie. #moviereview #movie #movies #film #filmreview #cinema #review #moviereviews #films #movienight #cinephile #moviescenes #ladymacbeth #movielover #moviebuff #movietime #romance #filmcritic #filmreviews #movierecommendation #moviecritic #hollywood #moviequotes #florencepugh #cinematography #movieaddict #reviews #drama #thriller

For those of you that are unfamiliar, Baby Reindeer follows the real story of Richard Gadd during the early days of his comedic career as he becomes the subject of an unhinged deranged stalker, named Martha. Rarely is a creator so open and vulnerable about the real horrors of the trauma they endured. In what I initially thought was merely an interesting tale about a disturbed fan quickly turned into an extraordinarily raw and honest exploration about the consequences of indescribable psychological damage and how it comes to affect the rest of our lives. In avoiding what easily could’ve been a neutered version of events, Richard Gadd puts his entire soul on display for the world to see and shows us the true severity of suffering he endured, and how that bled into (and perhaps even helped foster) his situation with Martha. But even beyond the story, this is genuinely an incredibly well-crafted project. The writing is sharp, the direction is strong, the tone is unique, the cinematography is stunning, and the performances are easily some of the best I’ve seen from 2024 thus far. Both Gadd and (maybe even especially) Jessica Gunning are absolutely exceptional in their execution and easily worthy of the highest acclaim an actor can receive for a limited series. Overall, I adored every moment of Baby Reindeer. Any minor flaws I might hold are significantly overshadowed by the caliber of quality each frame holds. This is definitely not a show for everyone, but for those of you willing to endure the emotional agony that Gadd presents, this is certainly worth your time and energy. • • • #cinema #cinemalover #cinemalovers #cinematography #cinephile #cinephiles #cinephilecommunity #filmdirector #filmcommunity #filmreview #filmreviews #moviereview #moviereviews #moviereviewer #moviecritic #indiefilm #indiefilms #movielover #movielovers #zendaya #movierecommendation #filmlife #letterboxd #richardgadd #babyreindeer #jessicagunning #netflix #navamau #weronikatofilska #josephinebornebusch

This was a weird movie. I was really enjoying the love story part of the plot line but the whole part about them being aliens was pretty bad. I think it could have been fine if it was explained a little better but it really seems like they were trying to hide the plot holes with the love story part of this movie. If you ignore the two main characters falling in love nothing else about this movie makes any sense! I guess if you look at this movie as being a comedy then it doesn’t matter if it makes any sense but I also didn’t find really anything about this movie to be funny at all. I really hated the punk scenes! Especially the scene where Enn and Zan sing together and I’m guessing that’s how she got pregnant? But that whole scene was such cringe. I was shocked to see Nicole Kidman in this movie! She was kinda cringe at times too but I think that was the point of her role. She really can be a great actress. Elle Fanning played her role really great though she was very cute. The love story part of this movie was the best part it was really sweet and heart warming once you get past all the weird shit. The ending was also very cute too! I think if you go into this movie with a very open mind and just take what they give you it might be a fun ride. The film isn’t terrible but it’s very outlandish. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . : . . . . . . . . #movies #movies #movie #film #indiefilm #director #oscars #moviequotes #cinema #cinematography #filmmaking #letterboxd #filmmaker #actor #indie #moviereview #cinematic #a24 #filmreview #aesthetic #cinemalover #cinemalovers #filmdirector #filmcommunity #filmreviews #movierecommendations #moviecritic #movielover #howtotalktogirlsatparties #nicolekidman #ellefanning

I rated @thefallguymovie 6/10 @edencourttheatrecinema #inverness This is total bubblegum brain food - funny and entertaining but totally insubstantial. #ryangosling and #emilyblunt are the heart of this movie and it only really comes alive when they share the screen. #hannahwaddingham and #aarontaylorjohnson are having tremendous fun but kinda telegraph the twist. The Running Man (1987) In a dystopian America, a falsely convicted policeman gets his shot at freedom when he must forcibly participate in a TV game show where convicts, runners, must battle killers for their freedom. MY RATING + REVIEW 8.5/10 I'm usually not into these 80's actions movies but I was recommended by my dad and I bought it on 4K recently. We watched it together and I really liked it, has a cool premise to it and it's action-packed with funny one-liners. And of course Arnold Schwarzenegger plays a badass like usual. But my favorite character was Richard Dawson's character Damon Killian who is the main antagonist, who plays a hilarious and mentally cocky person who is the host of The Running Man, he's definitely the standout in the movie in my opinion. This movie is super entertaining and fun. #TheRunningMan #ArnoldSchwarzenegger #RichardDawson #SciFi #Action #MovieReview #MovieReviews #MovieReviewer #FilmReview #FilmReviews #FilmReviewer #Review #Reviews #Reviewer #Movie #Movies #MovieBuff #MovieLover #Film #Films #FilmBuff #FilmLover #Cinema #CinemaReview #CinemaReviews #CinemaReviewer #Movie #Movies #MovieBuff #MovieLover #Film #Films #FilmBuff #FilmLover

IF only this movie were better... In my opinion, this movie was nothing short of disappointing. While there are moments (emphasis on "moments") where the emotional core of this movie stood out and hit me personally, there is nothing about this movie that felt noteworthy or memorable. This film has a premise as interesting as Pixar's "Monsters Inc.", but it doesn't spend that much time dealing with what the Imaginary Friends are or how they actually interact with their kids.  Furthermore, the ensemble cast felt unapologetically wasted. With an "Oppenheimer" level ensemble voice cast, stacked with multiple amazing talents such as Emily Blunt, George Clooney, Bradley Cooper, Matt Damon, Bill Hader, Brad Pitt, Sam Rockwell, and Maya Rudolph, most of these imaginary friend characters don't even have much to do in this movie, with all of these creatively designed imaginary friend characters not living up to their story potential due to none of them playing any significant role to the story.  I like John Krasinski. He's a hilarious actor as evidenced by his roles in "The Office" and Marvel's "Ant-Man vs. the Wasp", and he's a significantly talented director as shown by his debut feature, "A Quiet Place", however this movie is the absolute definition of wasted potential. There were so many creative and interesting possibilities that the story could've went, and instead, we got a mildly entertaining and decently charming movie that borders on being forgettable.   - - - #film #movie #movies #films #filmcritic #filmcritics #letterboxd #ifmovie #johnkrasinski #ryanreynolds #randallpark #filmreview #filmreviews #moviereview #moviereviews #moviereview #moviereviews #cinema #stevecarell #emilyblunt #bradpitt #bradleycooper #cinephile #aquietplace

“I Saw The TV Glow” is fascinating. The story is open to multiple interpretations, from a more literal #fantasy one to a surprisingly effective #allegorical. #JusticeSmith and #BrigetteLundyPaine are subdued yet strong and #JaneSchoenbrun‘s script/direction are assured. 3.8/5. It’s an odd duck whose wild swings and implications won’t float all boats, but I’ll definitely remember this through the year and think it will resonate strongly with many, especially social outcasts. Guy Ritchie's movies are hit-or-miss for me. Some are really good while others leave me pretty disappointed. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is luckily one of the good ones. It's not great, but I did have fun watching it. The movie is at its best when it focuses on the action and the banter between the characters. The action scenes are very good and are elevated by Christopher Benstead's impressive score. The dialogue is really fun and all the actors do a great job making their characters likable, mainly #henrycavill and #alanritchson . They're clearly having a lot of fun in these roles. Both of them deliver very funny performances. #eizagonzalez also stands out. I really liked the work she did here. The movie does fall short when it comes to the storytelling. #guyritchie goes for style over substance, which hurts it narratively. The script is weak which makes the story quite boring at times. It also doesn't provide much depth for the characters. The cast is doing a lot of the heavy lifting when it comes to making the characters work. Overall, Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare isn't one of Guy Ritchie's strongest films, but it does have enough to make it an enjoyable watch. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #moviereview #moviereviews #moviereviewer #reviews #review #filmreviews #filmreviewer #filmreview #cinema #cinephile #reaction #streaming #ministryofungentlemanlywarfare #actionmovies #action #henrygolding #alexpettyfer #herofiennestiffin #rorykinnear #movies #films #movielover #filmbuff #cinemalover #entertainment #caryelwes

“The Black Phone” is based on a short story by Joe Hill, who many may not realize is the son of Stephen King. Although the story isn’t rooted in real events, director Scott Derrickson drew inspiration from his own experiences. In an interview with news.com.au, Derrickson shared, “I grew up in a pretty violent area of north Denver. There was a lot of bullying, fighting, and kids getting hurt all the time. It was also just after Ted Bundy had come through Colorado, killing people, and right after the Manson murders.” Where to watch: Apple tv

"The Best of Enemies" is a drama film directed by Robin Bissell, released in 2019. The movie is based on a true story and stars Taraji P. Henson as Ann Atwater, a civil rights activist, and Sam Rockwell as C.P. Ellis, a Ku Klux Klan leader, who find themselves forced to work together to co-chair a community meeting on school desegregation in Durham, North Carolina, in 1971. The film depicts the difficult social and political conditions in the American South during the 1970s, exploring issues of racial discrimination, inequality, and the importance of open dialogue to overcome deeply rooted prejudices. It is worth watching for its strong performances and its exploration of important social issues. The movie's message about coming together, understanding others, and how talking can create positive change are particularly relevant in today's context, making it a compelling watch for those interested in civil rights history and human relationships. In the end, the movie shows how important it is to have empathy and understanding, especially when dealing with strong prejudices. He is also being very obsessed of his Mission and disregards other People. I really enjoyed the Movie. It was well acted and the Characters were compelling. While not being a Historical Movie it was a great Reprensantation of this Time Period. Challengers (2024) IMDb 7.7/10 My Rating 6/10 To be honest, I was expecting more to this. I didn’t particularly like the style of the film, but the last shot was very well executed. I guess I was looking for more characters and depth, but instead this felt like I was reading a boring Wikipedia article. The music wasn’t my favorite and the cinematography likewise. The actors weren’t my favorite too. . . Synopsis: Tashi, a former tennis prodigy turned coach, turned her husband into a champion. The Internship Two salesmen whose careers have been torpedoed by the digital age find their way into an internship at Google, where they must compete with a group of young, tech-savvy geniuses for employment. Starring - Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson, Rose Byrne, Aasif Mandvi, Max Minghella, Josh Brener, Dylan O'Brien, Tiya Sircar. I have watched this one before but never reviewed it, so i had a rewatch last night with reviewing it in mind. Honestly it was as good as i remembered. It is just a purely funny film, but actually it has a surprising amount of wholesomeness in it too. As we see the older guys learn about technology from the younger generation. But them teach them too about communication, rapport, and just generally how to socialize better. There were so many funny moments built around the generational gap that made me laugh out loud because it's true, just the difference in thinking. The 'stuck in a blender' scene was hilarious. There were so many scenes that made me laugh, one i always remember from the film is when the guys blast Alanis Morissette from their car and sing along at full volume!. It is a movie that, while it may not be considered a classic comedy, it's one that i think does it's job when you watch it. It has a lot of funny scenes and a genuinely wholesome story and shows how generations can learn from each other. Standouts - Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson were so good in this. They are acting legends and are individually brilliant at comedic roles. So them teamed up is just a delight to watch, seeing them riff off of each other. Bottom line, a film that may have slipped under the radar as i rarely see it talked about, but is genuinely one that is a lot of fun. Well worth a watch!. Watch on Disney+ or Prime Video. What did you think of the Movie?

REVIEWED! CHALLENGERS (2024), directed by Luca Guadagnino, starring Zendaya, Mike Faist, and Josh O’Connor. It’s certain that “Challengers” has style and compelling drama, but it struggles a bit to rise above that. 8.4/10 ⚠️ SPOILERS BEGIN BELOW ⚠️ The score by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross is electric. The music not only helps keep the film moving, with its upbeat tempo, but also creates a synthy atmosphere that gels perfectly with the story. Likewise, Sayombhu Mukdeeprom’s camerawork is creative. He allows the camera to have such fluidity that flows with the content he’s covering. Nothing comes off as overly flashy, though. It all fits the style of the film. The three central performers of “Challengers” truly are given time and scenes to shine. Zendaya was solid, but I found that both Mike Faist and Josh O’Connor outshined her. The relationship dynamics in this film are definitely compelling. The triangle of passion (I struggle to call any of this “love”) and conflict easily creates tension, which can be felt especially towards the end. The nonlinear structure, in my opinion, helps make this even more intriguing. “Challengers” surprisingly also has a fun sense of humor. While it’s not the main focus of the writing, there are some comical character beats that work to the film’s benefit. All of that said, I do think there are points where the pacing tanks a bit, especially during the finale, which has a near excessive use of slow motion. The last match is drawn out so long that it makes the last fifteen seconds feel extremely abrupt. Additionally, not much is done with the relationships apart from displaying them. They’re entertaining, yes, but not deep or rich. They’re shallow, though I’m thinking that was Guadagnino’s point, at least partially. This is a film about manipulation and control, and, in the end, the biggest manipulator (Tashi) wins.

STING Horror Movie Review In a derelict Brooklyn apartment block a young girl adopts a tiny spider. She has no idea it came from outer space, nor that it has an ability to grow beyond reason. Soon everyone is in danger including the girls’ family. With her knowledge of the monster’s only weakness, she is the only one who can protect them! Really happy for the Australian director Kiah Roache-Turner to secure a Hollywood gig, STING is his perfect cup of tea, combining the space horror with ridiculous creature feature, with a generous dash of black humour. Surprisingly this is also a genuine and hard felt family drama that raises stakes unexpectedly high. There are a few very nasty death scenes, that will belong in a slasher movie rather a creature feature - they are imaginative, grotesque and utterly disturbing. Despite all that STING is a family horror film straight from the eighties that will evoke some nostalgia. (Critters and Gremlins come to mind). It has an identity of its own however, and does not shy away from some gruesome and disturbing scenes. There’s some fun to be had with a causal horror viewer here, but while being a lot of fun and incredibly tense, STING doesn’t bring anything new to the table. MY RATING + REVIEW 7.5/10 I liked this alot, it's the most realistic rom-com I've seen, compared to most of them at least. It's not over the top or cheesy, it's light hearted.
