A captivating film still from the exceptional and loosely autobiographical 1975 Soviet drama masterpiece ‘Зеркало’ (‘Mirror’), directed and written by the renowned Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky (4 April 1932 – 29 December 1986). This particular shot pays visual homage to the painting ‘Jagers in de sneeuw’ (‘The Hunters in the Snow’) by the Dutch Renaissance artist Pieter Bruegel de Oude (Pieter Bruegel the Elder, c. 1525–1530 – 9 September 1569), as depicted in the second image. Børsen - the old Stock Exchange in Copenhagen - as we knew it. The original, iconic spire made from the entwined tails of four sculpted, fantastical, Renaissance dragons is now gone forever. Said to protect Denmark (and the building) from enemies and fires, it stood the test of time and troubles for almost 400 years. During the fire, the newly restored copper roofing below acted as a heat conductor and engulfed the amazing and unique beacon that was this spire entirely, and it fell in the late morning after hours of wild fire eating away at the historic building. We shall see if this gorgeous piece of architecture and craftsmanship one day will rise above the rooftops and yet again be part of the Copenhagen skyline. I woke up to some rather sad news this morning: the storied, protected (the first in Danish history) and historical building Børsen (the old Copenhagen Stock Exchange - built in Dutch Renaissance style in 1625 during the reign of King Christian the 4th) tragically went up in flames in the early morning hours… Not only on Queen Margrethe’s birthday, but also an eerie throwback to my home city, where the landmark Parisian cathedral Notre Dame burned on this exact date (beginning on the 15th in the late afternoon, extinguished in the early hours on the 16th) five years ago today… So sad, when a gorgeous piece of artwork (yes, this building was ART!) with both cultural and historical significance disappears. It will most likely rise like the Phenix from the ashes one day, but it is a piece of history and a massive cultural icon in the Danish capital and history, that is forever lost in its original form. EN: Two Monkeys or Two Chained Monkeys is a 1562 oil on oak painting by Dutch and Flemish Renaissance artist Pieter Bruegel the Elder. The work is now in the Gemäldegalerie. The painting depicts two monkeys shackled to an iron ring beneath an archway. Behind them, in the background, lies the city of Antwerp. Due to Antwerp’s status as a port city, they were probably taken from their natural habitat by animal traders. Bruegel likely drew the symbol of two chained monkeys from Quattrocento Italian artist Gentile da Fabriano’s Adoration of the Magi. In that work, two monkeys are seen similarly chained under the central arc. Rosenborg Castle is a renaissance castle located in Copenhagen, Denmark. The castle was originally built as a country summerhouse in 1606 and is an example of Christian IV's many architectural projects. It was built in the Dutch Renaissance style, typical of Danish buildings during this period, and has been expanded several times, finally evolving into its present condition by the year 1624. The castle was used by Danish regents as a royal residence until around 1710. After the reign of Frederik IV, Rosenborg was used as a royal residence only twice, and both these times were during emergencies. The third photo is of the great hall inside the Rosenberg Castle with the Coronation throne guarded by lions of silver. A perfect segue to today’s historical event in Copenhagen. Citing health issues, Queen Margrethe II, 83, will become the first Danish monarch to voluntarily relinquish the throne in nearly 900 years. Her 55-year-old son and crown prince Frederik will be proclaimed king before the people on the balcony of Christiansborg Palace in the heart of the Danish capital. Kokkedal Castle on the island of Zealand (there is another and much older Kokkedal in Jutland). Built in 1866 by architect C.V. Nielsen in ‘Rosenborg style’ (after Rosenborg, a 17th-century Dutch renaissance style castle in Copenhagen), it had various owners until 1993 when it was bought by a wealthy businessman who was notorious for acquiring a lot of historical buildings and then completely neglecting them. In 2003, the Supreme Court ruled that he had to hand over the castle to the local county for nothing as the building was so dilapidated at this point. It has since been renovated although almost nothing of the original interior remains. Yesterday was the day: the new Heritage Centre for 's-Hertogenbosch was officially opened! It houses the city's archaeological collection, a library, study rooms, a lab and Archeo-Hotspot, and a whole lot more. Beside all that, it has a brand new permanent exhibition on the history of the city, brought to life by six historical figures and their stories. I have had the pleasure to dress three of them. They represent prehistoric, medieval, and early modern Den Bosch. I am very proud, not only of what I produced, but of what I've learned along the way, and I'm sure I will take that knowledge and experience into whatever comes next. Thanks again to @erfgoedshertogenbosch for entrusting this to me, and thanks to all others involved for working with me to make this whole exhibition come together so well. Throwback to last month when I visited the @drentsmuseumassen for its #artnouveau collection. Unfortunately the art nouveau section was under renovation so I have to come back another time. But it was pleasant to see the #museum It is a beautiful complex formed by an old cloister and other buildings, of which some constructed in the prescribed #19thcentury #dutchrenaissance style for public offices. Artista Ex Machina en el @Teatrocolon es una experiencia escénica digna de los mejores festivales de teatro del mundo. Nicola Costantino nos sumerge en un recorrido que fluctúa entre la seducción y lo macabro. Su reciente exposición de arreglos florales cerámicos en @fundacion_santander_ar fue una explosión de color que dejaba entrever lo que se traía entre manos, y anoche lo confirmé. I was at the @radboudumc hospital again today. This is always a nice building to park my van in front of. It is 'Huize Heyendael' also known as 'Jurgens' castle'. Previously it was the country house of the owner of the estate surrounding it. Since the middle of the last century, the university hospital and university buildings have been built around it. De Waagh De Waagh is a restaurant that is housed in a beautiful ornate red-brick building in the Grote Markt, Nijmegen. Originally built in 1612, in Dutch Renaissance style, this red-brick weigh house, took pride of place on the Grote Markt. It was here where merchants & traders drove their wagons to have their wares weighed & sized, before exiting on the market square to sell. A huge pair of scales still hang inside the beamed building. Now @restaurant.de.waagh is a fantastic place to visit for great food & drinks.
