Still Life With Grapes and Other Fruits by Luca Forte, 1630s Luca Forte’s original meaning for this bountiful still life has been lost, but it may be an evocation of the bounty of autumn. The grapes, apples, and pears represent harvest fruits, and a seed-filled open pomegranate itself symbolizes abundance. As here, Forte typically added tiny insects, snails, and drops of moisture to the fruit. By painting on a copper panel with painstaking brushwork, he gave his surfaces a polished smoothness similar to fine enamel.Forte was known for his sensitivity to the material nature of the objects he represented, capturing their solidity and roundness through light, shade, and color. Best known in his own day as a specialist in these fruit still lifes, Forte transformed the development of the still life genre in Naples. He introduced landscapes as backdrops, instead of the plain, dark backgrounds of the earlier Neapolitan style, which followed Caravaggio’s lead. Source: getty.edu J. Jacques Testard de Montigny (1663 - 1737), French officer and commandant of Fort Michilimackinac. ⚜️ Jacques Testard de Montigny was born on 22 February 1663 in Montréal, New France. Five years after the death of his father in June 1663, Jacque’s mother married Jacques de La Marque, who would raise Jacques and his older brother Gabriel. In February 1690, Jacques, now 26, took part in an attack on the Schenectady settlement in New York under Pierre Le Moyne d’Iberville which saw the deaths of 60 of the 110 settlers and Natives at the settlement. In 1693, Montigny, now an ensign, set out from France (where he had went the prior year) to Fort Nashwaak, Acadia’s capital, and helped lead Abenaki warriors in attacks on English settlers. Montigny also took part in d’Iberville’s Avalon Peninsula campaign in late-1696 and early-1697, leading a detachment of men along the coast and ridding it of English settlements. ⚜️ On 20 April 1700, Montigny was promoted to lieutenant, and in the winter of 1704, once again led Abenakis in attacks on English settlements in Newfoundland, this time under Daniel d’Auger de Subercase. In 1706, Montigny and his friend, Abenaki Chief Nescambiouit, were received by King Louis XIV in France. Chief Nescambiouit had served alongside Montigny in Newfoundland, and was knighted by the King. In 1712, Montigny was awarded the Order of Saint Louis, and in 1713 was granted leave due to poor health. He married Marie-Anne La Porte de Louvigny in 1718, almost 15 years after his first wife’s death. ⚜️ In 1721, Montigny was put in command of the fort on baie des Puants (Green Bay), and on the way met Jesuit priest Pierre François Xavier de Charlevoix, who recorded Montigny’s stories in a later book about the history of New France. By autumn of 1723 he was back in Montréal, and seven years later in 1730 he was appointed commandant of Fort Michilimackinac. He retired in 1733 and was placed on half pay. He died on 9 July 1737 in Montréal.

The Road to Marston Moor Part One: Why Was York Attacked? In the 17th century, York was the unofficial capital of the north of England, and in many ways the country’s second city. It was also a crucial Royalist stronghold and a major centre of trade in the region. With the exception of a brief siege at the start of the war that was quickly lifted, York had not been threatened by the Parliamentarians, but all that was to change in 1644. In April of that year, the nearby Royalist town of Selby was captured, leaving no forces between the Parliamentarians and York. Victory at the Battle of Nantwich in January had also left the Parliamentarian army under Sir Thomas Fairfax unopposed, while their Scottish allies were marching on York from the north. The combined armies arrived at York on the 22nd of April, but they would need further numbers to completely surround the city. Reinforcements would arrive in the form of the Earl of Manchester and the army of the Eastern Association. They had recently captured Lincoln, removing Lincolnshire’s last Royalist garrison in the process, and were free to join Fairfax and the Scots. Manchester reached York in early June, placing his army to the north of the city. York and its garrison now found themselves surrounded by three allied armies, setting the stage for a long and brutal siege. 📷: Levitt Parkes

The Deane Winthrop House (1675) on Shirley St. in Winthrop, MA, a few blocks from the ocean. This 350-year-old house is one of the oldest wood frame houses in the country and is the oldest continuously lived in home in the US. 🕯️The house was owned by Puritan Deane Winthrop (1623 - 1704), the 6th son of John Winthrop, the second colonial governor of the Massachusetts Bay Colony, who the town is named after. The house was originally built here in Pulling Point (what Winthrop was formerly known as) just north of Boston in 1637 by Captain William Pierce and acquired by the Winthrops in 1647. It was remodeled several times with the current structure dating to around 1675. 👉 Swipe for a 1920 photo of the house. 🕯️Today, the home is owned by the Winthrop Improvement and Historical Association and holds multiple historical artifacts such as a 1641 Bible, 1775-era dishes from China, an 1823 Springfield musket, and an assortment of antique furniture. But it still serves as a private residence the same as it did 350 years ago. #winthropma #firstperiodhome #colonialnewengland #oldhouses #oldhouse #historichomes #puritans #boston #massachusettsbay #1600s #massachusetts #newengland #pullingpoint #maritimehistory #coastalnewengland #seacoast #atlantic #oceanlife #puritanhistory #17thcentury #lifeinanortherntown #woodframe #woodframehome #governorwinthrop #deanewinthrophouse #historicpreservation #history

Another precious, early purse currently in our inventory. Probably dating to the late 17th or early 18th century and measuring less than 2 inches (without tassels), it’s worked in queen stitch to create a pattern of silver flowers (possibly irises) using silk and silver metallic-wrapped thread (now lightly tarnished). Very similar 17th-century purses, with the same provenance, are now at MFA Boston. #purses #embroidery #queenstitch #17thcentury #18thcentury #purse #bag #needlework #antiquetextiles #coraginsburg

A mystery Chair. I’m reaching out here to anyone who may be able to help me put an age to this old chair. I purchased it last week at an antique centre where it was described as being in the Carrollian style which made me think it was a late Victorian, or Edwardian copy, but the more I look at it, the more I wonder if it’s an original late 17th example. It is not a form of chair I am very familiar with, but I suspect it was made to be a hall chair. The back surfaces have been left very rough with no fine finishing to the carving and the back splat is left straight from the pit saw. This all leaves me to believe it was always designed to stand against a wall. I think it is oak, but it might be sweet chestnut. The cane work looks to be very old and possibly original, with a couple of repaired areas. The carving is reasonably well executed, but a bit rustic. I feel this may be a simple provincial piece. I did wonder if it is English or whether it could be a continental piece? The lower carved panel has been smashed out at some point, and both tenons have been spliced. Does anyone have any thoughts as to it’s possible age or country of origin? Whatever the outcome I’m not too bothered as it fits well in the corner of our bedroom, and Kate has quite fell in love with it #17thcentury #carrollian #antiquechair #hallchair #oakchair #antiqueoak #carvedchair #canechair

One of the finest early carvings, I have purchased in a long time....I think it is part of an elaborate over-mantle, above the fireplace in an English manor house or from the panelling around a very grand room....it shows two finely carved cherubs holding the most beautiful Tudor Rose and I love the way each cherub has an English oak leaf covering their modesty...the carving is as I have bought it and has not been restored, as a lot of collectors and myself prefer to leave it as it is now....always pleasing to see a piece like this, showing the 400 year journey it has been on...... the carving is in good condition with a pleasing colour and natural patina. Saturday morning finds this looking at this lovely large living room. From the gold ceiling molding to the oriental rugs on the floor, this is a beautiful room, complete wth 17th and 18th century Dutch and English oil, painting portraits, Meissen porcelain, lovely antique and modern furniture and wood paneled walls. The fireplace has a colorful 18th century porcelain garniture set on it and the lighting from large electrified gilt bronze wall sconces, and table lamps provide very adequate lighting for evening hours. One of the nicest things about this room is while it is accessorized with rather formal antiques and artwork, almost all the seating is very comfortable looking. The flowers and the green house plants tone things down abit, and make the room feel even more like a casual room. The ceiling and walls are kept white, so as not to compete with the wonderful colors in the art and accessories. Great use of rich fabrics, mahogany furniture, fine accessories, and oil paintings. There’s so much to learn at one of our events, tickets for The Battle of Marston Moor at Scampston Hall on the 26th and 27th of May are on sale now, link in our bio! Alexander Leslie, 1st Earl of Leven, led a storied life with a famed career through most of Europe’s wars. Born an illegitimate son in 1580, Leslie joined the Dutch Army in 1605, eventually earning the rank of captain before transferring to the Swiss army in 1608. Leslie became a colonel, was knighted and became a close confidant of Gustavas Adolphus, the Swiss father of the modern military. Leslie served under Adolphus when Sweden entered the 30 Years’ War, serving as Sweden’s 13th Field Marshal. Leslie stocked up a number of military successes on the continent before, in 1638, returning to Scotland and taking the role of Lord General of the Army of the Covenant. The Scottish Covenanters were rebelling against the religious injustices of Charles I’s rule in the first stage of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, the Bishops’ Wars. Even though he had defeated the Royalist forces during these wars, Charles I rewarded Leslie’s military successes at home and abroad with a role on the Scottish Privy Council and the titles of Lord Balgonie and Earl of Leven. Leslie commanded the Scottish Covenanter forces again in 1643, leading an army of troops from Scotland into the North of England. Joining forces with the Parliament armies of Fairfax and Manchester, Leslie, as the most experienced military commander, took overall command of the three armies. It was his command that brought Prince Rupert to bear at Marson Moor – come and see the result at our Late May Bank Holiday event at Scampston Hall! 📸 Tim Worrall #thesealedknot #scampstonhall #whatson #yorkshire #history #scotsbrigade #scots #earlofleven #17thcentury

I still sometimes found myself languishing in the romanticism of the past, allowing myself a bit of nostalgia now and again, as a treat. #amsterdam #17thcentury #beautfuldestinations

Popped in to see the Caravaggios @ulstermuseum They’re definitely worth a visit, even if you’re not into Renaissance and early 17th century religious art. They’re on loan as part of the @nationalgallery 200th birthday celebrations. 🎨 ‘The Supper at Emmaus’ (1601) and ‘The Taking of Christ’ (1602). Both were commissioned by Ciriaco Mattei, a wealthy nobleman in Rome, and amazingly, this is the first time these two paintings have been reunited since the early 1600s. What a super feat @ulstermuseum! Fun fact: the guy holding the lantern in ‘The Taking of Christ’ is a self-portrait. His actual name was Michelangelo Merisi of Caravaggio, so his artistic name comes from the village he grew up in. You can see this exhibit throughout the summer until 1st September! #caravaggio #michelangelomerisidacaravaggio #thesupperatemmaus #thetakingofchrist #renaissance #art #17thcentury #17thcenturyart #ulstermuseum #belfast #visitbelfast #ulster #nationalmuseum #nationalmuseumofireland #uk #ireland #artappreciation
