Alexander Leslie, 1st Earl of Leven, led a storied life with a famed career through most of Europe’s wars. Born an illegitimate son in 1580, Leslie joined the Dutch Army in 1605, eventually earning the rank of captain before transferring to the Swiss army in 1608. Leslie became a colonel, was knighted and became a close confidant of Gustavas Adolphus, the Swiss father of the modern military. Leslie served under Adolphus when Sweden entered the 30 Years’ War, serving as Sweden’s 13th Field Marshal. Leslie stocked up a number of military successes on the continent before, in 1638, returning to Scotland and taking the role of Lord General of the Army of the Covenant. The Scottish Covenanters were rebelling against the religious injustices of Charles I’s rule in the first stage of the Wars of the Three Kingdoms, the Bishops’ Wars. Even though he had defeated the Royalist forces during these wars, Charles I rewarded Leslie’s military successes at home and abroad with a role on the Scottish Privy Council and the titles of Lord Balgonie and Earl of Leven. Leslie commanded the Scottish Covenanter forces again in 1643, leading an army of troops from Scotland into the North of England. Joining forces with the Parliament armies of Fairfax and Manchester, Leslie, as the most experienced military commander, took overall command of the three armies. Q is for Quebec Allan Maclean, born at TORLOISK in 1725, began his military career in the Scots brigade in Holland. Along with Lieutenant Francis Maclean, he was taken prisoner at the siege of Bergen-ap-Zoom in 1747. On July 8, 1758 he was severely wounded at Ticonderoga (in the 7 Years War). On January 16th 1759 Allan became captain of an independent company and was at the surrender of Niagara, where he was again badly wounded. Returning to Great Britain he raised the 114th Foot (or Royal Highland Volunteers) and became major commandant in October 1761. On May 25th 1772 he became a Lieutenant Colonel. Allan raised the 84th Regiment - The Royal Highland Emigrants - in 1775. They succeeded in defending the city of Quebec from attack by Generals Arnold and Montgomery. He was later promoted to the rank of brigadier-general. This pair of trews is based on the Sir John Hynde-Cotton trews held by the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh. The originals were massively altered and repaired, with three different sets of tartan. However they share some key features with paintings and other trews from the 17th and 18th century. Specifically, a diagonal seam running up the front of the thigh, a bagged seat area, integral feet and a flap hanging down over the crotch/fly area.
