1975 - Dowgate Fire Station, City of London, UK - Hubbard Ford & Partners. The only Fire Station that serves the City of London, based on Upper Thames Street it is also the home to the London Fire Brigade Fire Investigation Unit. Regrettably the only surviving part of Mondial House. Mondial House was a telecommunications hub and international switching centre (ISC). It was demolished in 2006 and unfortunately I took no pictures of it (pic included from a google search). It was built of concrete and white plastic cladding, 57,000 square metres on a 1.1 hectare site and was the largest telephone exchange in Europe. Watermark Place was built to replace Mondial House and as part of the development, the Dowgate Fire Station was retained. This is another work following a continuing fascination of mine with the texture of concrete here on the Barbican Estate - its detailed, compacted and granular form; the colour of concrete on a hot day; in the shade and the way it offers light even when the weather is overcast. Up here on the estate, one sees it all in the concrete. 1976 - The National Theatre, South Bank, London, England, UK - Sir Denys Louis Lasdun. Grade 11 listed. Adjacent to the former ITV Studios on London’s South Bank, where plans are afoot to build a 25-storey development. This move is to be challenged in the High Court following action from the Save Our South Bank Action Group (SOS), a group of local opponents to the scheme. A recent letter to the campaigners from officials said that the SOS had ‘raised arguable grounds’ regarding Michael Gove’s decision to approve the plans, ‘which merit consideration at a full hearing’. Lasdun was an English architect and studied at the Architectural Association School of Architecture in London, and was a junior in the practice of Wells Coates. Revered and reviled in (perhaps) equal measures. It has appeared simultaneously in the top ten surveys of “most popular” and “most hated” buildings in London. King Charles described it in 1988 as “a clever way of building a nuclear power station in the middle of London without anyone objecting.” Even advocates of modernity such as Sir Nikolaus Pevsner found the béton brut RAAC concrete both inside and out overbearing. In contrast, Sir John Betjeman wrote to Lasdun stating that he “gasped with delight at the cube of your theatre in the pale blue sky and a glimpse of St. Paul’s to the south of it. One more concrete gem of San Francisco. Hyatt Regency. It was built in 1974 as a hotel. It’s still operating as a tourist place. The architect, John Portman, constructed the block near the main building with guest rooms. That’s amazing to realize yourself in the middle of a concrete street. I can’t say “in the middle of a concrete jungle” as the place is not like a jungle. The best word to describe the place is a German word “ordnung”. The halls form part of the Southbank Centre arts complex along with the larger Royal Festival Hall (RFH) and an art gallery, the Hayward Gallery (opened in October 1968). All were designed from the inside out, with their functions as art galleries and concert halls taking precedent over the exteriors. You can’t really argue that out of the trio of buildings, the Royal Festival Hall (1958) is the most conventional and restrained, in contrast with the bonkers, brutal Queen Elizabeth Hall and Purcell Hall. Bennett was born in Lancashire and qualified at Manchester School of Architecture, and taught and worked in Leeds. In 1943 he became the chief architect of Southampton and in 1945 he became the county architect of the West Riding of Yorkshire, where he designed many schools and housing developments.
