Stonebow House was designed by Wells, Hickman and Partners and completed in 1965. It was and still is a controversial building in the historic city centre of York. It is a building that is based in the architectural style of the time and creates a strong visual which juxtaposes against the history of the city . We see a small tower placed above a podium which incorporates elevated car parking with retail space below. It used a fine concrete aggregate to make the frame of the building and it carefully follows the contour of the space. The building was conceived as part of a redevelopment of the Hungate and Walmgate areas. In recent years, the building has been redeveloped with new cladding and removal of concrete panels to allow for large areas of glazing. Tayla Holland - Churchill Gardens - 2024 I spent some time taking pictures around the Churchill Gardens estate in Pimlico, one of London’s first - and largest - post-war housing estates. Built between 1946 and 1962 and designed by Powell and Moya, Churchill Gardens was a pioneering example of post-war social housing, and is largely made up of the iconic “Streets in the Sky” architecture that became commonplace in high-density mid 20th century British social housing. Castlemead From stories I've heard, Castlemead estate was pretty greazy with a bad reputation in the 90's. To try and stop crime the council added a concierge in the bottom of the block, although in recent years it's always stood empty when I've visited. Loads of people recognise this tower as it looks like it's built with Lego bricks with a big blue (previously red) strip down the middle. This magnificent home for HSBC sits in Leeds sits at the centre of the city. I don't know much about the building but I do find its pattern of windows set inside large panels of the building quite pleasing. The structure feels strong and safe which is quite apt for a banking building.
