This tree on my mom’s property is probably around 400-500 years old. With ponderosa pines, you don’t necessarily know by the diameter of the trunk, but rather the smoothness and orange color of the bark. On this tree, one that we climbed as kids, the bark is as smooth as terracotta tile. I also saw a tree that fell on the neighbors property, taking down its younger neighbor with it. I finally got around to working on a quick project that I’ve been meaning to accomplish for a very long time! This is our archery target. For the last few years I’ve been stealing the super old straw bales one at a time to be used as top dressing for the gardens. Our super sad soil has loved the extra organic material, moisture retention, and all the organisms that it has invited into ground. I needed to abscond with the last bale a few weeks ago, so I finally forced myself to hook up the trailer and make my way to our local Big R to replace them. Though I’m not sure when it will actually be used for archery again, I’m so happy with how nice it looks now! My Christmas Carol aloe surprised me with a gorgeous bloom this week! I’ve only had this aloe for a few months, and I’ve never had one bloom before, I was very excited when I found it had! Way too hot for me to do anything outdoors, at the moment, so I am sitting in the AC, at my office, thinking back to adventures in Sycamore Canyon and pondering the spread of the Rafael Fire and its potential interaction with recent burns and the intensive forest treatments SW of Flagstaff. Wylie went on his first overnight camping trip last weekend!!! Just a quick overnight to test him out while I had a friend @obmojo to help if needed. (Personally I try to never sleep in organized campgrounds myself, as the noise and proximity to other people impede my sanity and nature experience. Both these boys would be terrors in a campground, barking at every noise or car door they heard. We are dispersed campers for life!) Wy did fantastic and aside from wanting desperately to be off-leash to chase the myriad of smells he detected, he was comfortable and happy. Full tail curl almost the whole time. LIKES: - tracking smells, even up vertical road cuts - following little big brother Larry - hoping for dropped food - realizing our friend was still with us in the morning DISLIKES: - the car (no surprise there. He was not a fan of the fact that we would be sleeping in the car but he settle down when he realized we were all in there together) - Being constantly tied up. He did start chewing on the leashes twice, when he thought I couldn’t see. He stopped as soon as I said something but good to know he will chew his way out if given an opportunity - his safety vest. (It was too big at the start cause I forgot to downsize it from my old girl to his smaller chest) He rolled around several times trying to see if he could get it off, aka temper tantrum. But I require it for visibility in case he were to accidentally get loose and to make sure no one thinks he’s a coyote from afar. The only time he acted scared or barked was related to people- someone parking a car within hearing distance and a group of people walking up the road the next morning. Otherwise he was happy as can be. If you look really hard, there’s an airplane hiding in there! Our house sits under several flight paths. I haven’t checked to see where this plane is coming or going from, but we normally see it several times a week. It seems to be getting ready to land at a nearby airport and makes a very distinct sound as it banks over our house. It more or less stopped coming by through the panorama, but we’ve noticed it a few times recently, and it brought a smile to my face while we piled fire wood a few evenings ago.
