Today (9/27) I drove the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway from Blackhawk to Rocky Mountain National Park, passing by Golden Gate Canyon State Park on the way. If you’re hoping to see fall foliage in any of those locations this year, good news - now is the time! All of the aspens I saw today were bright yellow or close to it. ‼️A few super important reminders: 🎟️A timed entry permit is required for Rocky Mountain National Park (must book in advance on recreation.gov) 🚗Don’t stop your car or walk in the middle of the road. Always safely pull over into parking areas/pull-offs! 🍂Don’t carve the aspen trees - that’s like the worst thing you can do 😄Pack a good attitude and some patience, as popular leaf-peeping areas do get crowded. This is a new piece (untitled yet) and may be split into 2 or 3, but I felt inspired by fall colors that appear in the Rockies in New Mexico and applying them to both aspens and evergreens. Aspens feature brilliant fall colors but I thought about those moments when I would lower my camera admiring a sunset and would see similar colors with pines. These were made with watercolors and pens and measure approximately 9" x 5" each. They should be done soon and then prints available likely in June. :) The link to my store is in my profile. You don't have to be a pluviophile to enjoy walking in the rain at this altitude. Our skin and hair crave the moisture. Sometimes I make the mistake of thinking I should stay inside for neatness' sake but then I come to my senses. Because the minute I step outside, everything looks so animated...the drama of swollen clouds in blue, lavender, and grey...the darkening of stone walls...the immediacy of columbine petals...and of course the aspen trees with their silver bark and all-seeing eyes. All of the aspens I saw today were bright yellow or close to it. ‼️A few super important reminders: 🎟️A timed entry permit is required for Rocky Mountain National Park (must book in advance on recreation.gov) 🚗Don’t stop your car or walk in the middle of the road. Pt. 2 🍃 I think the feminine qualities of a woman and motherhood are two different things. I’ll explain this in a metaphor of two different trees. Both types of women and trees spread love and connection. Motherhood is like unto a fruit bearing tree. A pomegranate perhaps, with her thousands of seeds and red fleshy fruit. She spreads her love on the wind, far and wide. Single new trees grow, nurturing the next generation with kindness and wisdom. Her roots grow deep to the wells of water beneath. Her branches stretch high into the sky. She lives on through her pollinated seeds, her children. She offers fruit and nourishment. She brings forth life and love to all. There is another tree in the garden, the feminine qualities that equally spreads as far and wide, but without seeds and fruits. She can become the largest living organism on earth, the Aspen tree. She creates both deep and shallow roots of community, fostering up a crumbling mountainside with her root strength. New shoots of endless trees are all identical to her, proof of her great influence. She offers shade and shelter, and her bark and buds become food for many creatures of the forest. She lives on through her roots and saplings in a never ending regenerative process of love, compassion, and connection. Her brilliant yellow leaves laugh in the sky and bring happiness to all. Both are equal in their measure. Both bring forth new life. Both have deep roots, strong trunks, and lofty branches. Both provide food and shelter. While one spreads above ground through seeds, the other spreads below ground through roots. Both have incredible influence to provide shade and shelter for all. Both birth love. All trees in the forests and orchards are at risk of disease, doubt, heartache, and clear cut. Both the fruit bearer and the root spreader need water, sunshine, and good soil to truly make an impact. I have seen both women in action, the seeds of the mother and the connected roots of the motherless. I have witnessed both trees fulfilling their purpose.
