🩷 What’s Going On In My Garden At The Moment 💜 I had a little walk around my garden last night initially quite disheartened that hardly anything was in flower, all I could see was a sea of green, but once I started to look closely there was actually quite a lot. No my garden hasn’t got flowers all over the place but that’s okay. It can be so easy to compare our gardens to others but in truth our gardens are all so very different. It’s still quite early on in the season & patience is a virtue, good things come to those who wait and wait I shall do. I’ve pared things back a lot this year, I didn’t sow any biennials or do autumn sowing that would normally be in flower now which is what I had last year to bridge that gap from spring to summer and the weather hasn’t exactly been on our side this year has it. What I am so happy about is that two of my perennials have flowered for the first time since sowing their seeds three years ago, I have a huge rhododendron that’s still in bloom and so many lupins absolutely thriving and loving life, as well as so many other flowers too such as Zinnias, Cosmos, Roses, Hardy Geranium, Clematis, Pansies, Virginian Stocks, Lavender, Aquilegia, Osteospermum, Nemophila and Marigolds plus a bumber crop of strawberries that will be ready in a matter of weeks. What a bug would see if it enters my tomato forest 🌿 This is the bed where my compost sprouted so instead of there being caulis, broccles and coriander growing here it is full of peppers, gooseberries and loads of tomato plants 🤣 I've removed most of the gooseberries and did find a brave little cauli making an effort to survive. Volunteer potatoes in the sweet potato patch - actually the sweet potatoes were volunteers too. They took over in the area I had planted the beans. My new garden set up and current garden situation. Everything seems to be making slow progress (besides the tomatoes) mainly due to the high levels of shade along the fence throughout the day. 2022 NoMi Garden🥒🥕🍅🥬2022 was a challenging year. My dad passed way in January. I found myself needing an outlet, therapy if you will. We had gardens before 2022, but not well thought out, planned gardens. My mama and their English bulldog came to stay with us, so she was able to help me in the garden as well. I immersed myself into learning all I could about vegetable gardens, of course while navigating this world without my dad’s physical presence and ever present love. Wow, that foxglove is bright! The foxgloves do their own thing each year and seem to love it even though it's the exact opposite of their ideal conditions. It's south facing with absolutely no cover and sloping south also so very free draining and exposed. Its the driest soil I've ever seen, it used to be an open cast mine and people have told me that after the war they would come here to scavenge coal, we still find lumps of coal when we're digging. 🤍 W I N T E R P A N S Y 🌼🌸 A riot of colourful pansies are gracing my garden at the moment & I’m all over that. These are Pansy Universal Mixed F1 Hybrid, technically they’re a hardy perennial that will flower from late autumn through winter however, they didn’t bloom in winter and are now adding splashes of bright colour in amongst my patio containers. These Pansies will grow in full sun or partial shade as long as they have well draining compost or soil. Pansy flowers are edible and are used in salads, cakes or cookies, they are guaranteed to add vibrant colours to your garden or your food. Pansies will thrive in the cooler months providing cheerful little flowers injecting that much needed colour to our gardens. Last year I grew pansies & Violas from seed for the first time, the pansies have been in flower since last summer through winter & are still producing flowers nearly a year after sowing its seeds. Pansies are Viola hybrids which are officially known as Viola x Wittrockkiana. Pansies come in a wide range of colours from Pink, purple, white, blue, Mauve, red and even bicoloured, they often have markings on them that resemble faces or have stripes on them. As pansies are often mistaken for violas the easiest way to distinguish them is that the pansy is bigger than the viola, pansies will normally bloom in autumn & winter whereas Voilas flower in springtime. Begonia 🌺 With fabulous flowers that have a little secret within them this is another favourite plant of mine. There are two types of begonia, you can get the tuberous varieties that you treat similar to dahlias, these types of begonias are more suitable for containers, pots & hanging baskets, whereas fibrous rooted begonias are better for planting in beds & boarders. Begonias will flower from early summer straight the way through to the first frosts. They are such hard working plants that are prolific bloomers which are also low maintenance. Begonias prefer well draining moist soil/compost, if you have your begonias in containers of any kind they need lifting off the ground as they will rot very quickly. I had the tuberous varieties which had both male & female flowers on it. The male flowers are big double flowers whereas the females are single. The female will only show once the male part of the flower has shed its petals revealing the pretty single flowers with an open centre which is good for pollinators & pollinating insects. I'm posting this purely for my own reference so I can see the progression as I work towards the garden I want. So this weather in southern Ontario has been incredible so far, 19 Celsius today. So much spring work to be done with the lawn, gardens and general outside maintenance but I love it. I am taking a chance and brought up from my basement the hanging baskets that I tried to over-winter. Looking a bit rough but there is glimmers of green trying to come through. I got rid of all the dead stuff and then gave a good heavy drink of banana water/fertilizer to get their heart going. Fingers crossed what happens next but will keep you posted. 🪴 How do you clean your plants? I just use fish washing liquid and tap water. Easy. Spray and wipe down. I have a bottle made up, so it's always available.
