Philly’s nooks and crannies can feel truly magical some days. While lost in conversation dodging clipboard solicitors in center city we ducked down this little side street. I’m sure I’ve walked here at some point in my twelve years in this city, but it’s a particularly beautiful day, and I just had to stop and take in it for a minute. Imagine if all of our streets were this beautiful and car-free. Please. Actually imagine a future with far fewer cars, because we can either make it happen by choice and make it a beautiful, positive thing, or we can make the planet uninhabitable by continuing to use them excessively (among other things). We must make it a priority to change zoning laws so that towns can be built without reliance on cars to access necessities and with ample public transportation for long distances. I keep talking about it because far too few have even ever considered it, and it’s of the utmost importance. I actually wasn’t even planning to write about this topic on this post, but it’s always on my mind, and here we are. Like I always say, I have zero judgement for people who have to drive. It’s unavoidable most places. I take issue with people being forced to drive because of poor planning and asinine zoning laws, and I think it’s time to reconsider everything while we still have a small bit of time to lessen the impacts of climate change.

Our work with adolescents, young adults and men often reveals very real challenges of isolation and loneliness as drivers of negative health-seeking behaviours. When you are caught in a community with high levels of unemployment, violence and few paths out of what you see as a bleak future thanks to climate change, it’s no wonder depression and suicide rates skyrocket. 🤔 Is it just me or does interior design sometimes seem to overlook the very humanity that inhabits its spaces… the one that serves as the bridge between our "sculptures" and "reality"? Jan Gehl once said that "architecture is the interplay between form and life". Let’s notice that when we mention life in this context, it is shaped by our sensory abilities ✨️, which, surprisingly, even those of us deeply involved in design tend to overlook due to our fragile psyches, often misguided by ego rather than focusing on what truly matters: perception, life itself. So, when I read the word “life” here, 🗨 I'm interpreting it as the array of senses that define our reality as humans, the users of spaces. From my perspective, these senses determine everything—through past experiences, like recognizing the speed of falling water, and future predictions, like estimating distances based on that speed. These dimensions of space and our feelings about them are crafted by our senses. Without them, nothing would be.🫥 As designers, we must tread carefully, always remembering the purpose behind our designs.
