Tonight is Brigid’s Eve, or ‘Oidhe na Cruha’. Folklore speaks of Bridget’s Cloak or Black Breeda where you would leave a scarf of piece of cloth outside on your door.
Brigid would pass by overnight and bless these garments with healing powers which can then be applied for headaches or sore throats or other illnesses.
Brigid/Brighid/Breed is the Triple Goddess but at Imbolc she moves from the Crone aspect to her Maiden youthfulness. This triplication was represented by the Druidic sign of ‘awen’, meaning inspiration; the fiery arrows of Brigid.
She brings with her the gifts of renewal of the land and the Triple Flame; fires of the hearth, healing and inspiration. She is represented by lambs, ewe’s milk, serpents and sacred wells.
Brigid’s Crosses are traditionally made today from reeds or straw. These solar crosses are a fire wheel symbol and placed on the hearths of homes throughout Ireland and beyond as a symbol of protection.
A Brigid Poppet is a ‘doll’ created in the form of the maiden in a white dress. One day to make and one day to carry with you then places on a bed on your Altar or hearth to bring fertility and good fortune to the home.
Brigid was adopted by the church and sainted but later de-canonised in the 1960’s for being pagan!
So dig out your favourite scarf ready and don’t forget to leave Brigid a gift of milk, bread, honey or spring flowers …..
