Our workshop today turned out to be an improvised one 😅 One student had to reschedule and then when Verna arrived I thought she was too experienced to be learning Chalk Paint basics so instead we went through more intermediate level applications - decoupage, stencilling, transfers, raised stenciling, making coloured wax and metallic leafing. It was super fun! 🥰 So I’ve decided to offer this as a class (after I make some more examples). 🌿Gumbi Gumbi - The Zen Tree (Pittosporum angustifolium) Gumbi Gumbi may look whimsical, but she’s tougher than she looks and loves Perth weather. This evergreen tree is happy in a large pot or in a sunny spot in the garden. Gumbi Gumbi grows in a wide variety of soil types, from heavy clay to mostly sand. But for best results in a home garden, choose a well-drained loamy soil or potting mix, located in full sun, and water well throughout the dry season. This species is capable of growing up to 6m in height, but as it’s a slow grower, you’ll find it suitable enough for small backyards. With its hanging branches and thin, willowy leaves, it makes an attractive addition to any native garden or balcony. Although also known as the Native Apricot, the fruit is not edible. It’s the leaves which hold all the magic of this hardy tree. Simply pluck fresh leaves as needed, or harvest a bigger batch and dry them for later use. Ziziphus jujuba ‘Chico’ This is one of our Chico Jujube (also known as the Chinese Red Date) Have you heard of these? My husband calls them “Zizis” and says they grew up eating these in Burma and India They’re becoming quite popular in Australia and rightly so. They’re a nutritious, delicious fruit and even the leaves are nutritious The fruit starts out green before developing reddish brown splotches which may ultimately colour the entire fruit. It can be eaten fresh from the tree, dried, candied, substituted for raisins, sultanas or dates in recipes, be made into a tea, used in baking and stews - it’s endless!
