Since Tina's tumor donation was made in 2019, the team at Lucille Packard has invited us to visit the Children's Hospital and The Monje Lab. For many reasons, including mental health reasons, I never accepted the invitation. This past Friday, we finally made the trip. The team was extremely professional and kind. 1st Pic: We were able to make a donation to The Monje Lab through the Lucille Packard foundation. 2nd Pic: The front main entrance to the Lucille Packard Children's Hospital. They currently have 361 beds and, on average, birth approximately 4000 babies a year. 3rd Pic: Main entrance. Throughout the entire hospital, you will see bronze statues of Wildlife of California. They're always in pairs as well. 4th Pic: Every floor has a school for all the children with extended stays. 5th / 6th Pic: A new playground structure and statues were recently installed, and the children at the hospital were able to determine the colors. At the base of each statue, you will find the initials of the child that won the coloring contest. 7th Pic: Sophie's Place, donated by 49ers QB Steve Young in honor of his friends daughter, Sophie. It is a full studio. They broadcast pre-recorded and live TV/ radio shows. With children sometimes joining the fun. 8th Pic: Bronze statue outside the chapel of a mother and child hugging, at the right angle, they form a heart in their embrace. 9th Pic: The Monje lab. Where an extremely dedicated team fights every day against #dipg LAST PIC: My daughter, Tina. I knew this would be difficult, but it is our reality. What you see are her cells. If you look closely, you'll see some with large halos around them. Those are the cancerous cells. How ironic? A cancer that is terminal is identified with halos. They have 106 donations to date. To all affected, I encourage you to consider a tumor donation so that we can continue the fight. Hopefully, one day, parents won't hear, "Go make memories," or "There is nothing we can do." Today is #worldcancerday much love, strength and comfort to all that have been affected by this horrible disease and to all that have fought along side the friends and family. On this day, I want to shine a light on #dipg which is considered an extremely rare brain cancer and fatal. My Tina was diagnosed in Jan. Of 2019 and gained her wings 6 months later. Her treatments were the same as Neil Armstrong (yeah, the astronaut) daughter, Muffie, who also passed away from DIPG in 1962. 60 years later and our children continue to receive the same treatments. Levi has experienced two clinical trials, radiation, three brain surgeries, and too many MRIs and pokes. (As our 🐞 would ask before every doctor visit, no matter the doc, “No pokies or ouchies?” 😭) Levi participated in Seattle Children’s Hospital CAR T Cell Trial, just as Hero Emily. Just a few weeks ago, Levi was placed on hospice care at home, due to the progression. Despite all of her challenges Mary’s joy and strength is contagious (something that resonates deep within as was so evident in our little 🐞). It’s truly unbelievable and even more unbelievable to witness. Such.A. Beautiful. Fighter! She is from Northglenn, CO and was diagnosed with DIPG in October 2020. Mary’s story began very similar to Valentina Marie’s- and most DIPG patients with noticeable changes/symptoms that appear minor at onset but rapidly progress. After 30 rounds of radiation therapy, Mary was able to begin the CAR-T Cell Therapy trial and was the seventh person in the entire country to undergo it (Angel Jace Ward, Kyra, Julianne, Alexandra included❤️). This is the trial conducted by Dr. Monje & team at Stanford, home of Valentina Marie’s tumor tissue. Mary’s preschool has rallied around the family to keep #MaryStrong and her family is so grateful from their community’s support, faith, and beyond. Such.A.Hero! * please note, I’ve been given permission to share part of this hero’s story. She is from Mainville, OH and was diagnosed with DIPG in 2019. She is almost two years post diagnosis this August, and is still fighting with a stable tumor. 🙏. Reese’s heroism does not just stem from her second by second fight with this most fatal pediatric cancer. Reese was born premature and hardly breathing. By two years of age, she suffered from so much physical abuse from her biological family members, that it took toll on her body and left her with disabilities and special needs to carry for her lifetime. In 2017, she moved in with foster parents, unable to see, struggling to speak and walk. Please note: This was all prior to her diagnosis in 2019. This is so much more than a heroic warrior Princess❤️. Her family continues to hold on to the faith that she will beat this.
