This year, two outstanding French maritime festivals will once again take place in Brittany, with a spectacular parade of sail between the two. Held every four years, the @fetes_maritimes_brest will welcome more than 1000 boats from all over the world from 12-17 July, to celebrate international maritime cultures and heritage. From 18-21 July, the festivities continue with the biennial @fetesmaritimesdouarnenez, held in the historic port of Rosmeur in Douarnenez since 1986. In W142 (July/August 2020), Jean-Yves Poirier brought us the story of how these two festivals came to be – and how their success launched many more across the country and changed the trad boat scene for us all. Back issues are available for £7 or £8 per copy including postage to anywhere in the world from www.watercraft-magazine.com/back-issues/ or follow the link in our bio. This weekend Woodbridge & Waldringfield Boatyards and Waldringfield Sailing Club host the @oldgaffersassociation1963 Deben Cherub Centenary Rally, celebrating 100 years of the Deben Cherub class, designed by A.R.J. Curjel and built at the boatyard (formerly Eversons). The postponed OGA Teamac Gaffling Championship will also run over the bank holiday weekend. Based at Waldringfield, there will be racing along the length of the river for both events, with an informal lunchtime ‘reception’ by the river in Woodbridge on Saturday. Marc Fovargue Davies brought us the story of @woodbridge_boatyard in W146 (March/April 2021). More on @wolstenholme_yacht_design’s Gaffling design in W143 (September/October 2020). “During the last maritime festival at Douarnenez, on the oldest slipway in the ancient port of Rosmeur, JOSÉPHINE was baptised with music and general jubilation. In the crowd pressed tightly on the quay, several dozen people proudly said to each other: “I helped build that.” How can a boat only 23’ (7m) long have so many builders?” Find out in our May/June issue, as Jacques van Geen and Roger Barnes bring us the story of how the Association Treizour @canotd21 built their lugger. Lying abandoned in a Scottish boatyard, a little wooden Fifie, typical of the small, double-ended herring boats which were once seen in their hundreds around the east coast of Scotland, caught the eye of engineer Nick Barlow. Realising her potential for restoration one day, Nick bought her and took the lines off her, deciding to recreate her design using modern wood techniques in his workshop at Designcraft, nearly 500 miles away. “No-one warned me boatbuilding can be addictive, but I should have worked it out for myself.” Only a year after home boatbuilder Tony Darrah finished his last boat, withdrawal symptoms struck and he found himself embarking on another build - this time a @selwayfisherdesign Northumbrian Coble, from a CNC-cut kit from Jordan Boats. Read all about Tony’s coble build in our May/June issue, where we also hear from designer Paul Fisher, as he explains his fascination with these boats and introduces his fleet of sailing coble designs. Think you’ve got a challenge on your hands getting your boat out of the workshop and down to the water? If you haven’t got to remove a garden fence, prune trees and lower a brick wall you’re not trying hard enough! When Jerry Eardley built his 30’ (9m) gaff cutter at his home in suburban Manchester, loading it onto a lorry to transport it to Cornwall meant doing all those things, not to mention first getting the boat out of his house – quite literally! From W134 to W152, we followed Jerry’s progress as he built his modern gaffer to Ed Burnett’s Zinnia design. Find out how he got on with the big move in W146 (March/April 2021). “Here’s one for your box of curiosities!” Shooting in St Tropez last summer for her Classic Sail calendar, Kathy Mansfield encountered something completely different. “Delve into a seafaring community miles from anywhere and there's a good chance you'll find tales of derring- do, nuggets of wisdom and larger than life characters in their past. And often their present.” Castine, Maine is no exception, as Kathy Mansfield found out when she uncovered the colourful story of the Castine class; a fine 18’ (5.5m) centreboard one-design designed by local boatbuilder Mace Eaton in 1951. Inspired by the pointus and barquettes of the Mediterranean coast, this 16’5’’ (5m) lateen-rigged dayboat is a departure for designer François Vivier, renowned for his Breton-style gaffers and luggers. Designed to be built by home builders from a CNC-cut kit or plans, Gabian has a stitch-and-tape carvel planked plywood hull with an off-centre motor well, making her fully trailable. François Vivier introduced his Gabian design in W120 (November/December 2016). Few newcomers to clinker boatbuilding would be brave enough to opt for the finest of timbers, but skilled woodworker Meryon Bridges wasn’t deterred. He built SOUTHERN CROSS, his 13’ (4m) version of Iain Oughtred’s Shearwater design, in carefully sourced premium Huon Pine, with exquisite results. “Sorry Mr Scales, you did your best, it’s just that a little schooner running down its latitude was taking up more room in my head than Fleming’s Right Hand Rule.” Thankfully for us, designer Paul Gartside was more interested in his ‘boat doodles’ than school Physics classes.
