Our weekend has consisted of: •Moving all lounge and study furniture to the utility or a temporary lounge in one of the bedrooms •Removing all the carpet in the front two reception rooms •Removing all the skirting boards •Stripping all the wallpaper We’re having new wooden floors put down in the two rooms so are prepping for that, as well as moving pipe work and having new @arrollofficial radiators put in. 1880 Victorian house, Chicago, IL. During the restoration, we discovered that moisture within the brick wall, caused by previous repointing with hard cement mortar, had led to significant rust buildup on the original steel plate. The house is looking so fresh and clean after a freshen up with white paint (I know boring but I love white). The wood floors are about to be sanded back and all the dark varnish removed by the lovely Darren @art_restoration_berkshire who I’m so excited to have snagged as he’s an absolute perfectionist and in such demand, so watch this space. I’m going as light as possible with a very very slight hint of white just to take the edge off. Then new carpet will be laid and because I want to go much lighter here too after years of dark grey, I’m thinking of going for a Polypropylene one in a gorgeous herringbone pattern. EXTERIOR BEFORE & AFTER - I don’t know if I’ve ever properly shown the outside of the extension - I’m always so focused on the interior! But this weekend I cleaned up the tiles with a power hose and cleaned the windows so thought now was as good a time as ever. Before we had a very badly built single storey extension which housed the only bathroom in the house on the ground floor. It was an exciting day when that finally got demolished, making way for a full width double storey extension with a living space on the ground floor and a new bedroom and bathroom above. Now we have sliding Crittall style doors and a picture window with a window seat. The garden’s a bit smaller now so I can’t get a decent full width shot of the whole rear facade but swipe through to see some satisfying before and afters! Yesterday the inside of this original built in November 1864 Victorian bedroom cupboard was whitewashed first. We did this to highlight the repairs that needed doing before the colour went in today. There were a few rotting holes in the side of the chimney breast wall to the left inside but took the filler paste I made last night really well. So today, my son Leo filled in other small drilled holes from before ten years ago when we moved in, put the pure brilliant white satinwood on the inside of the door, then my dark dove grey matt finish I saved from when we did the hallway last year all over the interior. When he called me to see, I literally shouted: “oh yeah!!!” It was an exciting moment for sure. Imagine the oak dove grey bookcase that’s taller than me in the alcove the other side of the chimney breast wall. It’s already amazing but the cupboard being able to be used by me for the first time is just next level awesome. We hadn’t planned on painting the shelves my son made yesterday, but seeing this made us want to do them too so we are just waiting for the UV index to come down to below 4 and we can each paint a shelf outside in the garden before our family meal later.
