Last month, some members of our team visited our friends at DNA Autosport who are specialists in race engineering and suspension setup, assisting us in rebuilding our Ohlin’s dampers each year! The team learned about the process behind car setup, how @dna.autosport develops custom suspension, and the precision required to race at the highest level 🏎️ We also got to see the wide range of incredible cars they work on, from drag cars, Porsche Cup cars and road cars. It was an incredibly fun and informative visit! We’d like to thank DNA Autosport and Modal Suspension for showing us around their workshop and for all their support throughout the year 🧬🧡

After our most competitive recruitment round to date, Sydney Motorsport was proud to welcome 31 new recruits into our ranks this semester! 👏 Over two weeks, a record number of applicants participated in either engineering induction tasks or business interviews. The team hosted information evenings and drop-in help sessions at our workshop to assist with this induction process. We’re super keen to welcome our new batch of recruits and excited to watch them begin their journey with us 🤩🏎️
Sydney Motorsport’s recipe for our first full carbon fibre monocoque👩🍳 Serves: As the main vehicle structure of SM23 Prep time: One whole January Cook time: 16 hours thanks to our good friends at @micronmanufacturing! Ingredients: 🔸 Carbon fibre 🔸 A pinch of mould release 🔸 4 cups of inserts 🔸 Vac bags 🔸 Gerry Cinnamon’s 2018 TRNSMT set 🔸 Blood, sweat and tears Method: 🔸 Lay up the carbon fibre with a debulk every few layers 🔸 Cure at @micronmanufacturing 🔸 Insert aluminum honeycomb with an adhesive film to bond the carbon 🔸Make space for our bolts’ inserts within the honeycomb and drill through the cooked carbon 🔸 Cure again at @micronmanufacturing 🔸 Repeat steps one and two And the result is our first EV’s chassis! Let us cook now (quite literally) 😉🔥

After 22 years, Sydney Motorsport’s IC journey came to a close at the 2023 FSAE-A Competition. Our 2023 challenger, SM22, was a testament of not only this year’s hard work and efforts but the passion, dedication and drive all previous generations of Sydney Motorsport has poured into this project. Our achievements at Calder Park, notably having our car cross the line for Endurance, was a reflection of the incredible 22 year journey that brought us here. It was a week of immense learning and we are pleased to announce our official results: 2nd Overall (IC Class) 🥇1st in Cost 🥈2nd in Business Presentation 🥈2nd in Design 🥈2nd in Acceleration 🥈2nd in Autocross 🥈2nd in Endurance Our deepest thank you to all of our sponsors, without whom this project wouldn’t be possible especially our diamond sponsors at Vinta, CH Warman Foundation, The Chancellor’s Committee, School of AMME, AMKmotion and the James N. Kirby Foundation. We’d also like to extend our thanks to all of our friends and family for your unwavering support! And thank you to our gracious competitors @ecuracing @wesmo_fsae @tduracing @wsformulasae, it was a pleasure competing alongside you in our final IC entry. Comp Day 1️⃣ and 2️⃣ recap: The team focused on completing our tech inspection and delivering our static events which included Business Presentation, Design and Cost. We currently are in the podium positions for the static events and will find out our official standings later today 🏆

Last week, two members of our team, Lucas and Tamara, visited @rosebank.college to share engineering and STEM opportunities available in university and Sydney Motorsport! By sharing their stories from high school leading to university, they shed a little more light on their STEM journeys and how Sydney Motorsport played a big role in their leaning experiences inside and outside the classroom. Our electric future was also a big topic of discussion, not just in racing but in the greater field of engineering. A massive thank you to @MasterCam for their ongoing support of our team, particularly in enabling us to code the CNC, an automatic manufacturing machine which makes our most complex parts 🏎️💻 MasterCam is one of the leading CAM softwares for CNC programming and allows the team to push our manufacturing capabilities to the highest level! The CNC software allows us to plan and simulate different parts of the machining operations. A new piece of our next era has landed 👀 These high-powered lithium-ion batteries from Enepaq will be our new EV’s main power storage component, compacted into 140 modules of 5️⃣ batteries. These modules will power our AMK motors that drive our wheels. Thank you to The Chancellor’s Committee for providing us with the resources for this important component as we charge into EV next year 🔋⚡️

Dynanometer more like Dyna-Yes-ometer! 🔥 We're putting SM22 to the test on the dyno today. For those who don't know, a dyno is a tool used to measure the power output of a vehicle's engine. By testing our car on the dyno, we can make adjustments to optimize its performance and ensure that it's race-ready. 🏎️💨

What. A. Week. It’s been a lot of ups and downs, but the team has learned and gained so much across the span of 4 days, and we wouldn’t trade this experience for the world. It was a massive shame being unable to complete the endurance event 200m from the finish line, but cutting it that close has only left us hungry for so much more, and we will definitely be back stronger. Braking down our new brake discs! 💿🕺🏻With the help of our partners at @micronmanufacturing , our new front and rear laser cut brake discs are now further optimised to manage heat while saving weight.
Cracking stuff! 😉➡️ - Ever wonder how we test our designs? With our move to a carbon fibre monocoque this year, we had to prove the structural strength of our design against an equivalent welded tube structure. TLDR: we break our stuff 🔨
The construction of the Engineering and Technology Precinct involved demolishing part of the former Electrical Engineering building. The rest of the building, including these fire stairs, was retained and grafted onto the new Precinct, creating a warren of plant rooms and service floors where the old meets the new. #usyd #usydengineering

Un-bevel-able stuff! 😳 A big thank you to our partners at Micron Manufacturing for helping to bring our designs to life - this 3D printed bevel box houses two bevel gears for the car's steering system. It's made from plastic and infused with short carbon fibres for extra rigidity!💪
