Sometimes, a really cool idea comes organically. When I told @gluepaintandplastic about an HGU55 on eBay, he may like he asked "Do they make any half scale helmets?" I told him not that I knew of. Well, anyone who follows Mike knows he makes things happen. Only a few days later, he sends me photos of an HGU-55 and MBU12 3d print that he had made. Wow! Look at the details! He has sent me some to mess with and see what we could do with them. I think these may be offered for sale in the future in kit form where you do they painting and apply the tape kit that can come with it. I don't have an exact scale, but these are about the size of a baseball and are really cool! I have a feeling we will be seeing Mike's amazing models with complimenting helmets on display. I did it! I finished my final checkride of pilot training this week and I found out what plane I’m going to fly. There was one more F-15 at March that was there for a maintenance issue. I went to March ARB for two days waiting for it to be repaired. The weather was very unpredictable with mostly clouds. On the second day, the clouds opened up briefly and luckily stayed open as two Lobos F-16’s took off. The lighting was so dimensional and it made the background look fake. The moral of this story is that perseverance pays off. I was at March for about 16 hours and this shot made it worth it. Oh, when the F-15 left that same day, clouds blocked the sun. BRRRRRRRRT part 2 This A10 pilot is rocking the same ERDL Camo tape on his helmet we looked at in yesterday's post. I belive this is a Navy transfer pilot based on the helmet appearing to be an HGU33. The EEK visor cover was used on some HGU2s as upgrades but the com location, visor lock knob and rounded earcup shape of the shell make me think this is a PRK37 shell used to make an HGU-33. The USAF did not use the PRK37 shell, but that doesn't mean it couldn't have been used. Another T-38 Thunderbirds team helmet repair. This visor cover was broken at the front where the name Jim was. It had a poor super glue repair attempt, which also had the obligatory fingerprint in it right on top of the hand painted name. I did the repair to remove the excess super glue and get it epoxied back together. I sent back to my paint guy for a repair on the crack. He touched up the red and the white on the M. The bright red in the first photo is the finished product. Any color differences are only due to lighting. I have had a lot going on with my 4 month old daughter having heart surgery a couple of weeks ago and haven't done much posting. But I have finished some projects in the last few couple months that I haven't shared yet. I've got another T38 Thunderbird repair to share after this one. For the first post of 2024, we have a 1980 Protection Inc USAF Thunderbirds HGU2 from the T-38 team. This helmet belongs to a former crew chief who also went on with the F16 team in 1983. It has many flight hours on it. The edge roll foam was badly deteriorated, which is common for helmets from PI of this era. The leather was pretty good, but all the foam was dust. (Note how flat it looks in the first couple photos) The ear cups were also completely gone except for the original leather. The leather was hard, crumpled up, and was assumed a goner. I was able to save and preserve it, and rebuild with new foam. The original edge roll was taken apart, and a new foam core was added. The chin and nape straps were dyed black and had badly faded. (See first photo) We redyed them back to black like when it was new. The visor lens was missing a track on one side for some reason. The glue on them gets brittle over this many years, and it probably broke off in the past. I had a broken lens here I was able to get the same track off and epoxy to the original lens. The visor operates perfectly. The end result is really nice. This helmet is all original with new foam in the edge roll and ear cups. All the leather, hardware, and parts are in original condition. It’s been over a month since I posted last & you could say I have been a smidgen busy… 😅. (Or you could say I have been overflowing with blessings… drowning in squadron jet photos… culling/shooting/editing every second of my life… oh! And in between my photographer stuff, being a mom of 3 toddlers. Soooo yeah, all answers are correct.) • This past month I have spent more time sitting in front of my computer screen editing than I ever have in my career as a photographer. Started my second phase of pilot training just last week. The cool thing is that this time around, instead of a single seat single pilot mentality, I get to train to be part of a crew again. It was 7 years ago that I came home from my first deployment on Veteran’s day. And a little over a year ago that a friend and crewmate took these pictures for me before I left my beloved EC-130H to start pilot training. Time is such a strange elastic thing. Memphis got his first jet cockpit experience @orlandoairshow last weekend. @dreambig_dewey had his F18 nose section there for all to get photos sitting in. It's painted like the Maverick Rhino, and his truck is decked out to match. He has tons of TopGun helmets to choose from to wear for the photos, but I knew we were going to see him, so we brought Memphis' VF101 HGU68. NOSE ART EPISODE 2: P-40 Warhawk "Lulu belle" burma Banshees. Colonel Philip R. Adair war born in Tuttle, Oklahoma, April 15th 1920. After advanced training he was assigned to the 89th Fighter Squadron of the 80th Fighter Group, which would later become the world famous and globally recognized “Burma Banshees”. Philip was the Flight Leader for D Flight and flew 139 combat missions. His plane “Lulu Belle” was number 44 and on his 44th mission, December 13th 1943, he would intercept and single handedly attack an enemy formation of 64 enemy airplanes. He shot down two confirmed victories that day and two more probable victories. For his bravery, Col. Adair was awarded the Silver Star. In May 1944 he would again find himself and his flight of four P-40 airplanes outnumbered by 15 Japanese Oscars. The battle commenced between 2,000 and 4,000 feet and would find Col. Adair claiming two more confirmed victories. Combining his love of automobiles and planes, his P-40 wore Wide White Wall tires and was probably the only P40 in WWII to wear such tires. I finally finished this quilt for my oldest. He was the last one of my kids to get one and was so patient in waiting for me to find the perfect pattern and then all the time I took to make it. He has always loved planes, cars and trains and since he was 12 has wanted to be a fighter jet pilot. He hopes to attend a military academy after high school and fulfill this dream. For this quilt I made a few small changes to Sally Hutchinson’s @itssewsally “Blessed Jets” quilt pattern. I used Kona cotton solids in Riviera and Charcoal and Black for the backing and binding. And I used Gelato ombré sunset from Maywood Studio for the afterburn. I quilted it with my favorite- straight lines, and followed the diagonal of the planes flight path.
