As Mother’s Day was this past Saturday, I would like to highlight again the story of my grandmother, Edith Sitrin, as the 10th addition to the Women’s Wellness Wednesday Series. My platform, “The Edith Effect: Educating Women on Uterine Cancer”, was named in her memory. My grandmother was a model, entrepreneur, and German immigrant to the US. She embodied the American Dream. Unfortunately, her uterine cancer went undetected for too long and doctors dismissed her symptoms as fibroids (benign growths on the uterine lining) until it was too late. My grandmother’s story emphasizes the message of “The Edith Effect” that early detection is the best protection against uterine cancer. If you or someone you know is experiencing any symptoms of uterine cancer please urge your/their doctor to take a biopsy and/or get a second opinion. Swim suit is arguably my toughest phase of competition as I struggle with Body Dsymorphia. The idea to be all alone on stage in barely any material with a million eyes looking at me is petrifying. Why? Because I think everyone is staring at certain areas of my body that I see as “perceived flaws.” Marilyn Monroe was deemed the most attractive woman. She had a zero toned stomach, her thighs had cellulite, and had stretch marks. She was AUTHENTICALLY herself. I’m taking a play out of Marilyn Monroe’s playbook: Just Be You! If she can be okay with her body and love herself so can I. Part of teaching Confident Me lessons through the Dove Self Esteem project, I love getting to talk about appearance ideals and what we as a society perceive a person as beautiful. With so much going on now in the world of pageantry I wanted to share my experience so far with USOA. I have competed in other systems that unfortunately no longer align with my beliefs. I had decided I would not compete anymore. However, this beautiful lady, @usoamrskentucky, somehow showed up on my insta page. After looking into USOA, I decided I’d compete one last time. Even though I have an at large title, I had to prove that I am who they would want to represent MS. Y’all! I have been nothing but pleased with this organization. As an at large title holder it hard to schedule events and things for yourself. I will tell you all of the women in this system have been nothing but helpful. From the directors to my sister queens. I know there is only a couple of weeks left to sign up but if you’re looking for a great system then look no further. Scoliosis symptoms can sometimes be invisible to those that aren’t struggling with it. Here are some things I notice about myself, that you might not: My left arm is longer than my right arm, by almost 2 inches, my left leg is also longer than my right leg. My ribs stick out on one side. My right shoulder is lower than my left. My left shoulder blade sticks out more than my right. Some of these things may seem minor, but they’ve affected the way I see myself in the past.
