A few highlights from a flying visit to the Savill Garden for a quick tour with @sianthomasuk who gave a wonderful unscripted guide to some of the famous trees in the garden and especially those which were special to Mark Flanigan. Then onto the Cumberland Lodge for the TROBI Alan Mitchell Lecture given in tribute to Mark Flanigan, the late Keeper of the garden by @tony_kirkham_trees and John Anderson. A thrilling lecture entitled 'From Seed to Champion Tree' was right up my street, and very entertaining. Pictured; 1 Magnificent bundle planting of Podocarpus salignus. 2 Fagus lucida which I walked past assuming it to be a broadened fastigiate hornbeam. Certainly a tree for the future. Thanks for the introduction Sian 👍 3 and 4 The tree we were introduced to as 'Mark's Tree'. The magnificent Meliosma veitchiorum he introduced here showing shape and flower, although not yet full out. One of the most magnificent trees to behold in autumn and seemingly superior to the Wilson trees. I need to get a handle on why the Edinburgh tree appears to flower before leafing out. 🤔 4 and 5 I had to go findout what this was growing against the wall. A plant I knew by name from my days at Hillier Nurseries where it appeared annually on the production list but without a stock plant or any chance of obtaining seed, I had never seen it let alone grown it. It is Bignonia capreolata, regarded in the 70s as a plant only suitable for the mildest gardens, but no dought more reliable with a touch of global warming, and a south facing wall. Stunning! #trobi #treeregister #treetime #savillgarden #treesandshrubsonline

Three pictures of Davidia involucrata starting with the extraordinary flower (inflorescence) that hangs protected from wind and rain, in the middle of the two large white bracts which give the tree its common name Handkerchief Tree or Dove Tree. Next is a less detailed view and the third picture is the whole tree. The tree is small unlike the wonderful species - which grows gloriously to 50’ - because it is the cultivar ‘Sonoma’. This one will never become magnificent and statuesque but it fits into my limited for space. It also has the advantage of producing bracts when 2 or 3 years old (wait 20 years for the species to do the same). Back to the first picture where you can see the one greeny yellow female style (actually hermaphrodite, I read in Trees and Shrubs Online) sticking out of this flower (look at about 5 o’clock). The stigma, looking like little fingers, are inflated ready to catch the pollen from the huge number of very small flowers male flowers that surround it. These male ‘flowers’ are just stamen with red anthers - no petals or perianth. I love the fact that there is only one female amongst all these boys. It is hard to find a female on every flower. These flowers will in time produce very attractive fruit (drupes) which will hang in the tree like decorations on the long 7cm stalks (peduncles - I love these words) that now dangle holding the flower between the two white bracts. These bracts hang like umbrellas to protect their charge from rain. As the bracts turn from a young green to mature white they become UV light absorbent so that they can attract pollinators that see in UV light. These are mainly bees. Nature ! How brilliant and endlessly inventive it is. #davidia #handkerchieftree #dovetree #davidiainvolucratasonoma #bracts #hermaohriditeflowers #maleflowers #flowerconstruction #inventivenature #treesandshrubsonline

Pitavia punctata at the Savill Garden. This collection never disappoints as there are always interesting plants to find and appreciate and this is one of them. It comes from Chile and the delicate white flowers are an addition to the attractive evergreen leaves. A plant to watch which is not widely available at the moment in the trade. It would work well in a protected site in London the south but it may be harder than first thought. #theroyallandscape #thesavillgarden #treesandshrubsonline

Metasequoia glyptostroboides 'Emerald Feathers' With its distinctive tight conical crown, this clone was selected at the US National Arboretum in the early 70s, and prior to the mid 1980s was the most common form in cultivation, after which seed became more widely available from China. The fluting of the main bole is a common feature, but the crowns are quite variable between different clones, and the size and vigour is also very variable. Emerald Feathers is a very vigorous form and this one is the #treeregister champion tree, although there are a pair of them that were planted here by Harold Hillier in the mid 70s. The story of this tree's discovery and introduction is one of the most fantastic dendrological tales told, and of course it had to be one of the first shortlisted for inclusion by @florafanatica and myself in #thestoryoftrees There is also a magnificent and very in depth review in TSO. #metasequoia #metasequoiaglyptostroboides #treeregister #idsdendrology #treesandshrubsonline

The best germination of any rose species that I have ever grown. Rosa virginiana, I do wonder if this is an apomictic tetraploid. It has all the hallmarks of being a clonal microspecies like Rosa glauca (Though I wish that species would germinate with the same ease) but time will tell as these mature. As described it has quite a complex taxonomy (see TSO) #treesandshrubsonline for an interesting appraisal. If it were hybridogenous it would explain the the conformity of european populations. #rosavirginiana

The flowers are out on my still very small Illicium simonsii - the plant is only about a metre tall so it has a way to go (about 3m perhaps?) but it will be worth the wait. This photograph, which is the best I can do, is no comparison to that of the beautiful photograph taken by Jack Aldridge and used to illustrate the species in Trees and Shrubs Online (@treesshrubsonline) giving a much better idea of what it will look like one day …. (perhaps). It gets cosseted a bit like a small child - it gets wrapped up when there is a heavy frost coming and unwrapped when the temperature rises - it will have to learn to cope with Derbyshire but not quite yet. I have had it for about two years and I expect the flowers to go on for a good many weeks if last year was anything to go by. The plant is evergreen, pyramid shaped and forms a fairly dense habit. So far so good. #illiciumsimonsii #yellowflowers #notsurewhattoexpect #overprotective #unusualplants #treesandshrubsonline #jackaldridge

A cypress species introduced by Keith Rushforth (KR 9641) probably as Cupressus assamica but labelled as Cupressus cashmiriana which will be a familiar name for the blue weeping cypress which has been for a very long time in cultivation. There is considerable debate regarding himalaya cypress trees, and their taxonomy and classification. Names such as himalaica, assamica, corneyana, torulosa, darjeelingensis etc etc which I cannot possibly contribute to with any authority. All I can say is that this is a very nice tree which I photographed #exburygardens on my last visit with @marielouiseagius. A tree with weeping branches and a uniform pyramidal habit, typical of many cypress species. The last two pictures are of a seedling I raised from the classic and long cultivated weeping Kashmir Cypress with its rather more open lax and irregular habit, with vertically descending branchlets. I have grown Cupressus cashmiriana from bought seed a number of times and they nearly always turn out to be something else, most often C. torulosa, or even in one instance the Mexican species C. lusitanica. #thestoryoftrees #treesandshrubsonline #kashmircypress # #cupressuscashmiriana

A friend generously offered seed of the rare Abies bracteata which coned profusely with them this year. I expected a little envelope with perhaps a dozen or so seeds, but this haul of spectacular cones arrived in the post this morning! This is going to be a sticky job, but already the delicious resinous smell is filling the kitchen. This is one of the most unusual and most distinct of the firs. Alan Mitchell called it 'a prize maverick' and those exaggerated bracts are just one reason why. Its razor sharp needles and big, conical, beech-like buds can be seen in images on the account at Trees and Shrubs Online along with some superb habitat shots. #abiesbracteata #santaluciafir #pinaceae #pinetum #dendrology #seeds #seedcleaning #treesandshrubsonline

The unmistakable golden flowers of Jasminum nudiflorum. Despite being a really popular garden plant, this isn't a plant I'm overly keen on. I'm not trying to be controversial and go against what other people like; when I see this plant it tends to be a rather scruffy thing with a lot of wiry stems and not a lot of flowers. Looking at the write-up at @ids.treesandshrubsonline, the text from Bean I believe, it says that J. nudiflorum appreciates a warm wall; this might be why plants planted haphazardly against any available wall in surprisingly cold West Devon might not be all that floriferous. I need to find somewhere with a good south facing wall that's in need of winter blossom to try an experiment. The TSO text also makes two observations: firstly that "careful training and spacing [is] more important than annual pruning", and secondly that this plant prefers to tumble than be grown upwards. These exact flowers posted here are borne on a plant that has somehow seeded into the top of a stone wall, and while I had rather considered this to be a problem that I must deal with at some point I'm now thinking that there might be an opportunity to be had to grow the plant as nature intended. Trees And Shrubs Online is a fantastic resource for plant-minded gardeners. Based on Bean's 'Trees And Shrubs Hardy In The British Isles' and 'New Trees' by Grimshaw and Bayton, this online resource aims to update and improve knowledge of woody plants. 'TSO' is being constantly updated, and best of all the resource is absolutely FREE! Although the site has a largely UK leaning, once you know how your climate compares with the UK you should be able to make a judgement for your local area. #gardening #plants #jasminum #treesandshrubsonline

A group of three young and resplendent Glyptostrobus pensilis (Chinese Swamp Cypress) #exburygardens Not usually afforded the moniker of 'Living Fossil' like its more common contemporaries such as Metasequoia, Taxodium etc, but that is exactly what it is. Critically endangered in the wild, and strangely uncommon in gardens. It is undoubtedly less hardy than its cousins mentioned above, but it has hardly been tested with rigour from all provenance or siting. It holds its foliage for longer into the winter than either Metasequoia or Taxodium, but these photos were taken a few weeks ago. @marielouiseagius may be able to say if it is still colourful? It was one if the highlights, quite literally, of a wonderful visit to the garden on one of this winter's increasingly normal dreary days. In the wild it is most often found growing in swamps where, like Taxodium, it produces pneumatophores (knees), but here at Exbury it is growing on what can only de described as usually moist but well drained soil, which can become seasonally dry. The autumn colour is enhanced by the perfect backdrop of the #trobi champion Quercus glauca which is one of a great many #champion trees in the gardens. Get one if you can. There are some large specimens available @hortusloci and it is definately on my 'Must Prop' list to produce some babes. A simplified attempt at distinguishing the leaves of some of the snakebark maples from section Macrantha. Clockwise from the top: Acer davidii - unlobed, oval-shaped A. davidii ssp. grosseri - triangular-oval, may or may not have three shallow side lobes. A. rufinerve - more deeply lobed "maple-like" foliage (with three lobes per leaf). A. capillipes - broadly oval-shaped, each with three pointed lobes. A. tegmentosum - large, round, shallowly lobed. A. pensylvanicum - "leaves obovate, base cordate to rounded, shallowly 3-lobed, lobes ovate, 8–16 × 10–18 cm, central lobe broadly triangular, apex acuminate, lateral lobes smaller, margins finely serrate, upper surface matt green, lower surface pale green, with reddish to rusty pubescence at first, petiole 6–12 cm long, green, grooved; autumn colours yellow to golden." However this is no golden rule as many in cultivation are propagated from seed coming from open pollinated parents. Photo 2 shows two leaves from the same young A. davidii tree! The final photo shows leaves of two good cultivars, A. x conspicuum and A. x conspicuum 'Phoenix' the leaves of both similar to those of one of the alleged parents, A. pensylvanicum, the other being A. davidii.
