Sipping down the last bit of a Milk Oolong sample from @westchinatea as a late morning session today! 🌱🐮 The liquor is so velvety and smooth with a thickness to it that mirrors the rich, buttery taste and isn't always present in this style of oolong the way I'm getting now. On top of a prominent note of double churned, fresh better I also get a lot of cooked milk flavour in the way that, say, a White Rabbit candy would taste. I really like that comparison because it's actually quite sweet tasting also. Like dipping freshly picked violets into sweetened condensed milk. Which is a good thing. Love that syrupy floral element that cuts through all the, well, daily comparisons. Yixing teapots on stamps!! Recently I found this old album with stamps from my childhood. These are mainly stamps from letters and packages my grandparents have sent me from China. The left teapot is described as a 'three legged round teapot' and the one on the right as a 'four legged square teapot'. Those stamps are actually a great overview of Chinese culture: we have other bronze and ceramic pots and vessels, mythology about the woman in the moon and how the sun came to be, paintings of nature and landscapes. Slide five is a series on traditional housing, you can perhaps recognize the round Hakka Tulou. Slide six are birds, you can see that each package usually had many blocks of stamps on them. The last stamp is from Germany. I have been reaching for lots of white teas lately, especially the samples I have from BitterLeafTea. Having sipped to the bottom of two of them in recent weeks, today I'll be finishing another one. As such, I figured that it was the perfect time to share my notes on BitterLeafTea’s 2022 White Crow and pair it with a piece of art in the process. Visually, the leaves of this tea have such a wonderfully cosy color palette with a rich dark brow as its deepest shade and a creamy gold as its lightest, all of which are covered with a glorious amount of trichomes. The aroma notes present matched that color palette perfectly, with notes of old books, almond pastries, varnished dark woods, vanilla pods, honeysuckle, dried mint & vanilla candles. Throughout the session, liquor from each steep ranged from an orange marmalade color to a darker, apricot jam tone and fluctuated between the two throughout the session. Apricots can also be found in the flavor profile, alongside notes of vintage first edition books,hay, wildflower honey, brown sugar, nutmeg, dried cherries, dried cranberries, green apple skins, icing sugar and herbal citrus cough sweets. Later steeps have notes of toasted white bread with butter and apricot jam & are also subtly spicy & slightly sour, with underlying woodiness. It is thick in texture, with light creaminess that coats the tongue and takes a while to dissipate. The finish is surprisingly long lasting for a white tea, the aftertaste consists of old books, light woods and a herbal citrus sweetness. Each and every session with this tea has left me feeling super relaxed, calm and de-stressed, which is an absolute godsend for someone that is always in pain. Art Pairing: Reading by Lamplight (Twilight: Interior) by George Clausen (1909) Oil on canvas. I went back and forth between two pieces when trying to pick a pairing for this tea, one that conveyed the notes within its colour palette & another that focused on the through line of vintage books within the session, and conveys the cosy and relaxed way I feel every single time I drink this tea, I decided on the later, as I think the former was a little too summery and bright for this tea.

The cooperative is no only a tea processing facility with tight controls around quality and sourcing, they also raise jasmine for scenting tea, and also have a nursery of Shan tea plants. My Spring tea order from @bitterleafteas arrived this week, so I'm steeping up a session of the 2024 Red Dragon Yiwu Shaihong black tea in my Pokémon gaiwan. I know I should wait for these cakes to have a moment to settle following their trip across the globe, but I couldn't resist breaking into at least one of them right away - new Spring teas always get me so hyped. . ...and this tea is incredible!! Thick and syrupy right off the bat with pungently sweet notes of waxy red fruits and almonds extract with undertones of maple, walnut, molasses, and golden raisins. Malty in its overtones, but floral and heady in the finish. I feel heavily invested already in the complexity and flavour impact of this black tea. I mean, just wow. It's going to be very, very hard not to immediately dive into the white tea and sheng pu'erh cakes made with this material. Very hard.

I'm on my third read through of The Summer Hikaru Died while I very impatiently wait for the release of the fourth volume, and this time around I've been really leaning towards Japanese green teas while reading - such as this one with its more toasty profile of mixed grains and nuts, though still with an edge of something more green and seaweed-like. This manga takes place in a small rural village in Japan so, in addition to those more roasty and cozy flavours being comforting in some of the more suspenful moments of this slow-burn eldritch horror, this style of tea pairing has done such a good job evoking the setting of the story and make this reread so much more immersive!!

Just got home to Seattle, and feeling so blessed and full of gratitude for all the incredible and generous tea people we’ve had the good fortune to meet in Taiwan. A great teacher said tea people are generous and inclusive; generous because they are excited to share and inclusive because they carefully notice both the strengths and defects of teas, enjoying the beauty despite the fact that no tea is perfect. Starting the morning with a session of @volitionteaco's Red Jade black tea!! This was such a pleasantly rich and full-bodied tea with a practically syrupy feeling liquor. On top of really cozy, sweet notes of caramelized baked sweet potatoes and yams, it also had notes of cocoa, maple and ripe, waxy red fruits. Maybe just a tiny bit of leather!? Very slick and round feeling, with that perfect sorr of deep, heavy sweetness balanced out by the bit of top note brightness from those more pomegranate juice-like fruit notes.

Sipping on a grandpa style brewed 2023 Veldt sheng pu'erh mini from @white2tea this morning. I have to admit to drinking this raw pu'erh somewhat absent mindely - enough so that I am confident I missed much of the nuance this tea seems to have to offer. However, I did quite enjoy the almost fuzzy feeling texture of my brew; it was just enough astringency to be assertive and pleasantly captivating without dipping into that more sandpaper sort of territory. I also got tasted a sort of pithy citrus note in the finish, like grapefruit zest. I'm quite intrigued to see how that flavour may fit in the overall picture of this tea when brewed with more care and attention. Thankfully I still have a good handful of minis left, so I will definitely get my mulligan in the future!

Tiger Sniffs the Rose 2022 Naka White Tea The dry leaves of this tea are not only beautiful to look at, with a colour palette of rich browns and vintage creams, all of which are covered in trichomes, but they have an aroma filled with sumptuous notes of vintage books, autumn leaves, dark woods, wild flowers, stewed cherries and vanilla sponge. The addition of water brought out rosewood, heightened notes of vintage books and linen lined wicker baskets into the mix. The flavour profile starts with a floral sweetness and juicy red apple notes, moving into notes of rosewood, creamy porridge with apricot compote, yogurt coated peaches, vintage books, almond bread, aged hay, brown rock sugar & vanilla sponge cake. From clay, it tastes like a second flush Darjeeling, with autumn leaf notes, muscat grapes and a great level of minerality. It has a creamy coating texture with a medium thickness to start, but it gets thicker as steeps progress. A slight dryness is present towards the back of the tongue and a little on the cheeks, but does not hinder enjoyment. The finish has a long lasting fresh creaminess, with lingering notes of old books and autumn leaves and dried strawberries. Sipping it out of clay intensified the creaminess but muted other elements. When picking a piece of art to pair with tea, I wanted to avoid being too literal, as that wouldn't be reflective of the experiences I've had with it. Instead I wanted a piece that was dramatic & warm, featuring some of the stand out aspects such as the rosewood, the indulgent creaminess, the lingering sweetness and the fruity & dessert elements, as well as linking to those vintage books and autumnal notes and A Table Of Desserts was the first piece that came to mind. De Heem was the most celebrated still life painter of his day and is best known for his still life pieces of flowers and fruit, arranged around elaborate platters, glasses and goblets. A Table Of Desserts is one of his oldest large-format, still life paintings, with a rich symbolic meaning relating to vanity and the fleeting nature of life and its pleasures.

I recently reviewed Mei Leaf’s Young Gushu 2022, but sadly that session fell a little bit flat for me. So for this #shengsunday I decide to sip on the 2023 Young Gushu to see how they compare. The dry leaves don’t have much aroma overall aside from subtle citrus peel, slate and cream notes. That aroma changes drastically with the addition of water, with notes of lemon sherbet hard candy, light caramel and wet slate. Each steep is golden, viscous and reminiscent of clarified butter, until around steep four where it becomes a little more orange / light copper overall, but still has those rich yellow undertones. Taste Notes Clay: Sweet lemon, spring grass, lemon and white chocolate tarts, mock orange (flowers), chamomile, syrupy sweet cloudy apple juice, cinnamon whipped cream and a starchy potato skin quality. Porcelain: French butter, mock orange (flowers), dried guava, frozen greek yogurt, syrupy sweet cloudy apple juice and a bright citrus bite that dissipates quickly, leaving a sweet citrus in its place. The spiciness was more of an outright spice note and didn’t have the added creaminess. It is smooth and thick in texture, which is noticeably different from 2022. 2023 however has a long lasting finish with minerality, green apple dryness, herbaceous citrus and a bright sweetness. It has a bitter-sweet transformation from both cups, though that transformation is much quicker when sipped from clay. Without a doubt I prefer Young Gushu 2023 over 2022. It is much more complex and better suited to my taste buds overall. It also had more endurance than the 2022, lasting double the steeps. Art Pairing: Vincent van Gogh Still Life (Nature morte) May 1888. Oil on canvas Painted not long after he moved to Arles, the vase and teacup featured were regularly featured in still life pieces throughout his time in there. Both the color palette and subjects of this piece pair perfectly with aroma and flavor profiles of this tea, in a way that no other painting could.

A yellow tea? Tea names can be confusing! Sometimes the color mentioned in a tea's name is not an indicator for the tea's category. Some of you might know that Anji Bai Cha (Anji White Tea) is actually processed as a green tea. This tea's name is 黄金芽 huang jin ya - yellow gold buds. It is a newer green tea type from Zhejiang province named after the yellow color of the leaf. The tea soup also looks more yellow than green. Still not a yellow tea. This tea is often bought as a gift because of the unusual leaf, the name also has positive connotations in Chinese. This tea is very delicate and light but is very soothing and pleasant to drink with no bitterness or adstringency. Note that light and delicate flavors are indicator of a high-quality tea in China. This is the defining step that calls out the GABA that is naturally produced when tea is left in an anaerobic environment. In Lalashan, the master uses three separate stints in the drum to call out a high gaba content and special taste. Brewing up @white2tea's original smoked sheng pu'erh, 2021 Pyrolad, as we head into the evening. I started the day with a more bright and soft session of white tea, but as the day has progressed, the teas I've picked out have gradually gotten more intense leading up to, well, here. This is a very smoky tasting pu'erh with some welcome roughness around the edges that (in my opinion) just adds to the overall complexity and layers of taste and texture. The liquor is almost more of a broth, with a strong upfront pine smoke tinged with snaps of bitter greens and tobacco. All of that culminates in a very savory finish that then suddenly breaks into a lingering sweetness in the back of the mouth and throat. It's such an incredibly distinct and unique tea; I'm always really grateful to W2T for getting as experimental as they do with their smoked tea collection because the results are always so striking!! I will probably continue to nurse this tea for the rest of the evening until the leaves have nothing left to give... 🔥🍵

One is depicted with his mouth closed, the other with his mouth open, representing the first and last syllables of a religious script. Image 2 - Japanese porcelain of the 19th century, with 100 poems written on the inside. Image 3 - Chinese tea jar, 10th century. I have a tea jar that has the same shape! It still looks so beautiful. Gaoma Erxi has a long history of tea production. In the 24th year of the Ming Hongwu Dynasty (1391), Gaoma Erxi tea was designated as a tribute tea. During the Qing Dynasty and the Jiaqing period, the first thousand taels of Anhua tea were produced in Bianjiang Village from Gaoma Erxi raw materials. The Royal Tea Garden is located in Gaoma Erxi. The dry leaf smells slightly herbal with a hint of exotic woods. The taste of the tea is full, fresh, combining dried herbs, floral aroma, a mix of spices and noble woods, golden flower and a very intense and fresh mouthfeel.
