So... Free to a good home, comes with everything you see here, not too heavy, not too big. Cheap at twice the price! I’m gonna give it two weeks, then it’s heading to the Great Service Bureau In The Sky. Image 1 shows the Tulsa press, assembled 1948, in the Main Room, and it is available to all renters. Image 2 shows the Nahant press, assembled 1951, in the Production Room, and it is available for production renters, although special arrangements can be made for other usage. These presses are slower but very precise, and the flat bed allows more leeway in setting formes and more impression depth with photopolymer or copper plates. They are also a bit safer, and are perfect for people new to the process or those who are getting back up to speed. Production day today, but the drive roller on the Tulsa press started to slow and slip, and then it stopped. 🤔 Whoopsie padoopsie! Problem: the belt between the motor and the transmission reduction wheel kept falling off, even after multiple repositionings. Well, not a surprise, I don't think this is original 1948 material, but there's a lot of time between then and now, and that definitely looks like a fabric belt. Fortunately I'd needed to get a replacement for the Nahant press a few years back, and if you're gonna order a replacement something from McMaster-Carr, why not order two? So there she is looking all spiffy in her new orange polyurethane belt, and she's cranking along all nice like now. Greetings! This is the monthly automated informational message describing the various rental options available at Reflex Letterpress. Reflex Letterpress offers three levels of rental access: A day rental is just that: you book the press for a day, we let you in sometime in the morning, we supply you with the keys to the studio lockbox, and you lock up when finished. A regular rental can be purchased in 30- and 90-day options. You receive a key to the front door of the Stove Factory building, and can come in at any time. The keys to the second floor and the main studio are accessed through a coded lockbox. For typesetting, paper cutting, or to use the Praga, Pearl or No 2, no reservation is necessary. If you wish to use the Vandercook No 4, you must reserve time on the Reflex Google calendar. A production rental is similar to the regular rental, except you also have access to the Production Studio, which includes another Vandercook No 4, the Jobber 7, bindery equipment, and the large paper cutter. A reservation is also required for the production No 4. Renters must show appropriate skills on the equipment for rentals. Rental prep sessions are available. Greetings! This is the monthly automated informational message showcasing the fine art presses available at Reflex Letterpress for rental use. Image 1 shows the Vandercook No 2 proofing press, assembled 1936. It is technically a letterpress, but it requires manual inking and manual paper placement, so is not optimal for production runs. It is optimal for producing small editions of linoleum blocks, woodcuts, letterpress formes, Lego prints, monotypes, and anything else a relief printer might wish to create. Its 20"x24" press bed allows for the printing of poster-sized paper. It is relatively easy to use, and requires minimal instruction for safe printing. Image 2 shows the Praga 22x30 intaglio press, assembled 2007. This press is excellent for etchings, engravings, aquatints, mezzotints, drypoint, monotypes, certain forms of lithography, and other processes that an intaglio printer might enjoy. Image 1 shows the Pearl Improved No 8, assembled 1912, in the Main Room, and it is available to all renters. This press is powered by a manual treadle. Image 2 shows the Jobber 7, assembled circa 1920, in the Production Room, and it is available for production renters, although special arrangements can be made for other usage. This press is powered by a variable speed electric motor. These presses were intended for wholesale production and are faster than the flatbed presses. They are also harder to keep in register for inexperienced operators, require careful lockups to keep the forme secure, and were designed before workplace safety was a business requirement. Interested renters will need to show appropriate skills and training before use, although the Pearl is easier and safer to use than the Jobber. We are also more than happy to provide comprehensive instruction in their use and production.
