Mr. Robinson Jr. was born and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas. He graduated from Little Rock Central High School. He received a full scholarship from @uarkansas to play @razorbackmbb but decided to sign with the Baltimore @orioles of the @mlb in 1955. Growing up, he rooted for the St. Louis @cardinals ; Stan Musial was his favorite player. He made his @mlb debut on September 17, 1955, for the Baltimore @orioles at age 18. He won so many awards and are too many to list. He is seen above in the first picture at Busch Memorial Stadium after hitting a triple off Sandy Koufax #32, of the Los Angeles Dodgers, during the annual @mlb All-Star Game on July 12, 1966. The N.L. beat the A.L. 2-1, in 10 innings. Playing the entire 10 innings at third base and getting 3 of his team’s 6 hits, he was named the game’s M.V.P., even though he was on the losing side. He was the A.L. M.V.P. in 1964 and the World Series M.V.P. in 1970. He won 16 straight Gold Gloves from 1960-1975. He also played in 18 straight All-Star games. He is a member of the @baseballhall of Fame. 99 years ago today…Selden Palmer Spencer (September 16, 1862 – May 16, 1925) passed away. Mr. Spencer moved to Saint Louis when he was 22. He attended @yale University where he played @yalelacrosse . After graduating he attended @washu and graduated in 1886. He then opened a law practice in St. Louis with future Missouri governor Forrest Donnell while also serving as a professor of medical jurisprudence at @washumedicine . He first held elected office in 1895 when he was voted a member of the Missouri House of Representatives. From 1897 to 1903 he was a judge of the U.S. circuit court. At the end of his term on the court he returned to his law practice. He also became heavily involved with the @americanbarassociation serving on its executive board & as V.P. in 1914. He was a lawyer & politician. A Republican, he was a U.S. Senator from Missouri from 1918-1925. He attended @virginiamilitaryinstitute and was a member of VMI’s first baseball team in the fall of 1866, playing 2nd base and eventually serving as the @vmibaseco team’s captain. While at VMI, James Frank Hopkins, Greenfield Quarles and Riley became close friends and founded @sigmanuhq fraternity on January 1, 1869. He was elected the first Commander (or president) of the chapter in the spring of 1869. He was reelected as Commander for the 1869 to 1870 academic year. He studied, engineering, geology, and mineralogy at VMI. After college, he worked in a salt mine. In 1871, he was hired to work in the engineering department of the Wabash Railroad, leading to jobs with the Missouri and Texas Railroad and the Pacific Railway between 1871 and 1878. He went to Salt Lake City, Utah between 1874 and 1876 where he worked in mine development. In 1878, he began working as a civilian with the @usarmy Corp of Engineers. He was engaged to work on improvements on the Mississippi River. He worked for the City of St. Louis as a surveyor with the street department. He rotated between these two jobs for 20 years. His father Lewis David Dozier I (August 25, 1846 - May 23, 1914) was one of the most important men in St. Louis; one who could, with genteel modesty, refer to himself as a capitalist. Young Lewis inherited the home at his father’s death in 1914 and sold it in 1920. He built a fine home at 5577 Lindell Blvd. He came to be president of the United Wood Heel Company. Some of his products were thoughtfully innovative; especially for shoes that were worn for farming and ranching. He sold to the Samuels Shoe Company in 1943. He was also a grain broker. His first marriage was to Elizabeth Overton. They were married in June of 1916. Their children were John Overton Dozier, Lewis David Dozier III & Marya O’Fallon Dozier. The couple divorced in 1933. Elizabeth was awarded custody of their three children. In less than a month she became the wife of August A “Gussie” Busch who soon became president of the @anheuserbusch Brewery. He was a member of the St. Louis Country Club and a former president of the Racquet Club. At the time of his death, he made his home at his Ladue estate, #38 Log Cabin Lane. 139 years ago today…Wayman Crow (March 7, 1808 – May 10, 1885) passed away. Mr. Crow settled in St. Louis in 1835, he partnered with his cousin, Joshua Tevis in a business, Crow & Tevis. The business later became Crow, McCreery & Company and was eventually called Crow, Hagardine & Company. He was the head of this firm until he died. He became interested in local politics & in 1840, he was elected president of the Chamber of Commerce. In 1840, he was elected as a Whig to the Missouri State Senate and again in 1850. He helped in getting charters for the Hannibal & St. Joseph & Missouri Pacific Railroads. In 1846 he secured the charter for the St. Louis Mercantile Library Association, the oldest library west of the Mississippi River. He also helped in attaining a charter for the St. Louis Asylum for the Blind. In 1853, while attending a legislative session in Jefferson City, he drafted an act of incorporation for an institution of higher education that would eventually become @washu . He initially called the school Eliot Seminary to honor his friend William Greenleaf Eliot. In 1854, the school was renamed Washington Institute & 3 years later, the state legislature incorporated the school as Washington University. He donated a substantial amount of money to the school for scholarships, a chair of physics & more than $200,000.00 worth of real estate. He also deeded the memorial he built upon the death of his son to the school as a fine arts school and museum. The building was dedicated as St. Louis School & Museum of Fine Arts & also called the Crow Memorial. His daughter was author Emma Conn Crow (April 3, 1839 – September 15, 1920). He was commissioned as a lieutenant in the @usnavyreserve in 1938 & following the japs attack on Pearl Harbor he went on active duty. At the time of his death, in 1943, he was a Lt. Commander. He studied first at the @artinstitutechi & later at the @aslnyc . He also attended the St. Louis School of Fine Arts (now the @samfoxschool at @washu ), there he studied under the school’s founder, Halsey Cooley Ives (October 27, 1847 – May 5, 1911) (see May 5th post). He was also a student in the @corcoran_gw . During the 1920s & 1930s, his images were selected for use by art directors for the nation’s most popular periodicals including Collier’s, Country Gentleman, @redbookmag , Pictorial Review, Coronet, @countrylifemagazine , @satevepost , The Ladies’ Home Journal, @cosmopolitan & a host of movie magazines. During the 1930s, he began painting movie poster art for Hollywood studios, including @paramountmovies & @20thcenturystudios Fox. He was one of the first artists to paint WWII pin-up girl, Betty Grable. In 1930, @generalmotors selected his “Fisher Body Girl” for a series of advertisements. He also illustrated advertisements for Whitman’s Chocolates @russellstoverus , @texacowithtechron & Camel & Chesterfield cigarettes. He was known for his illustrations of “striking women”, he earned a judging position at the @missamerica 1935 pageant. He was reported as missing in action on the USS LST-342 he was aboard and was torpedoed in the Solomon Islands. 140 years ago today…Samuel Hawken (October 26, 1792 - May 8, 1884) passed away. 📷 Credits: Rob Peterson. Mr. Hawken moved to New Madrid, Missouri in 1818 and St. Louis soon after. He served in the Maryland militia during the War of 1812. He and his brother Jacob were gunsmiths and traders who operated from their shop in St. Louis from 1825 to 1855. They are famous for designing the “plains rifle” named after them (the Hawken rifle). Their shop, though it excelled in gun-smithing, was also a bastion of old-fashioned craftsmanship; for up until 1848, they repaired and restocked tools as well as firearms and produced brass axes, tomahawks, gun worms and even basket-style hilts for swords. He also worked supplying guns to the American Fur Company. He opened his first @dairyqueen in Crystal City. He became the franchiser of some 81 @dairyqueen outlets in the St. Louis area & southern Missouri & was president & owner of @dairyqueen of Greater St. Louis Inc. He was independent of the International @dairyqueen company, but served on many committees that dealt with issues including advertising, product standardization & new concept development. He was credited with rejuvenating Dairy Queen’s image in the mid-1980s with the invention of the Blizzard. In a 1986 interview with @stltoday , he said he drew inspiration from the now-defunct Huckleberry’s in west St. Louis County. He said: “Huckleberry’s was putting crushed Heath bars, Oreos, Snickers & other candies in its concretes. He was also credited with introducing the “Full Meal Deal,” which offers a hamburger, fries, drink & sundae for one price. He served as chairman of the board of @cmnhospitals of Greater St. Louis for many years & with the support of his @dairyqueen stores, raised more than $3 million for the charity. He was also an active participant & fundraiser for @boyscoutsofamerica . He was an Eagle Scout & spent more than 30 years of his life in scouting & served on the executive board of the Greater St. Louis Area Council of @boyscoutsofamerica . 3 times @dairyqueen of Greater St. Louis Inc. was named as one of the top 25 small businesses in St. Louis. He received man of the year awards from the Unico National, an Italian-American service organization & from the St. Louis Italian Open Charity Golf Tournament for Children. He was a costume designer, known for his work on stage and screen. He attended @theatreschooldepaul . He began his career in St. Louis, where he did costume design, particularly for productions by @themuny . Later he went to Hollywood to work on Star!. In the 1970s, he transitioned to working on television, starting at @nbc Burbank Studios where he worked on hundreds of costumes each week for @nbc programs. Next, he moved on to costuming for @unistudios . In 1979, he designed costumes for the Broadway revivals of Peter Pan and Oklahoma!. In the 1980s, he was nominated for 12 & won 4 Emmys. In 1985, he opened Bill Hargate Costumes, a business which makes & rents costumes for film, television, stage productions & awards shows. In 1997, he began costuming the @missamerica pageant. He dressed @thisisanniepotts , @kim.basinger , @barbaramandrellmusic , Ethel Merman & Mary Tyler Moore for various awards shows. For the 1992 Academy Awards, his dress for @geenadavisorg was widely commented upon. He costumed for @amygrantofficial “A Christmas To Remember”. He became a clerk with Bernard Pratte and Company, a trading firm. He was a fur trader. In 1831, when he was living in Taos, St. Vrain became a naturalized Mexican citizen; it enabled him to avoid the restrictions placed on American traders in what was then Mexican territory. He soon afterward formed a partnership with American trader William Bent. The new company was known as Bent, St. Vrain & Company; the company’s trading area covered much of Wyoming, New Mexico, Kansas, and Colorado. St. Vrain Canyon, near Lyons, Colorado, and St. Vrain Creek, which flows through into the South Platte River, and St. Vrain School district in Colorado are named after him. He attended @mobaptistu where he played @mbu_baseball . He served as the pitching coach for @mizzou @missouri_baseball from 2006 to 2009. He coached the pitchers on the baseball team at Christian Brothers College High School from 2010 through 2011. The Seattle @mariners hired him as their bullpen coach prior to the 2018 season. He served as the @mariners Director of Pitching Development Strategies during the 2019 season. He was returned to the role of bullpen coach for the 2020 season. In June 2021, he became the pitching coach for the @missouri_baseball team. 144 years ago today…Eberhard Anheuser (September 27, 1806 - May 2, 1880) 🧼🕯️🍺🍻🇩🇪🇺🇸 passed away. 📷 Credits: @stlthetruth . Mr. Anheuser moved to Saint Louis in 1842. He was a soap and candle maker, and the father-in-law of Adolphus Busch, the founder of the @anheuserbusch Company. He was a major creditor of the Bavarian Brewery Company, a struggling brewery founded in 1853. When the company encountered financial difficulty in 1860, he purchased the minor creditors’ interests and took over the company. He became president and CEO and changed the company name to the Eberhard Anheuser and Company. His daughter Lilly married Adolphus Busch, a brewery supply salesman, in a double wedding with Anna Anheuser (Lilly’s older sister) and Ulrich Busch (Adolphus’ brother) in 1861. Despite the outbreak of the Civil War, the brewery remained competitive, partially because lager was not banned by the Union Army, while hard liquors were. As he became older, Adolphus Busch took up more of the company’s duties, and the company was renamed @anheuserbusch in 1879. 102 years ago today...Robert August Holekamp (May 4, 1848 - May 1, 1922) 👨🏻💼🐝🍯 passed away. Mr. Holekamp moved to Saint Louis when he was 22. He was a businessman & apiarist. He was significant in the development of Webster Groves & had state & national influence in the field of beekeeping. In 1879, he & James Gray organized the firm Gray & Holekamp, a wholesale manufacturer & distributor of sashes & doors & grew the company into the largest dealer in St. Louis. In early 1885, he bought Gray’s ownership interest & in December of that year he sold the company to Charles H. Huttig. Gray & Holekamp is known today as Huttig Building Products (now @wearewoodgrain), is one of the largest distributor of building products in the U.S. & is traded publicly on the @nasdaq Exchange. In 1901 he purchased a surgical instrument company which he named Holekamp, Grady & Moore. He sold the company after operating it for 7 years. In 1908, he co-founded the Holekamp Lumber Company in Webster Groves with his 4 sons. He moved to Webster Groves & served as the firm’s president. In addition to the wholesale & retail sale of lumber & hardware, the firm was active in real estate development. He & his sons established many of the subdivisions & built many of the homes in Webster Groves, in neighboring Kirkwood & in the surrounding southwestern suburbs of St. Louis. By the time of his death, Holekamp Lumber operated 6 lumberyards (St. Louis, Maplewood, Affton, Webster Groves, Kirkwood, & Gray Summit) & the company would remain in business until the mid-1980s. He was among the first to engage in urban apiculture in the U.S.. His bill created the state office of bee inspector, making Missouri among the first states to regulate the commercial beekeeping industry. Happy Birthday 🎈🎂🎉🎊🎁 Thomas “Tom” Tate Tobin (May 1, 1823 - May 15, 1904) 🇺🇸 🪤🐾👣⛰️🏔️🗻! 📷 Credits: Bill Breen. Mr. Tobin was born and raised in Saint Louis. He was an American adventurer, tracker, trapper, mountain man, guide, @usarmy scout, and occasional bounty hunter. In 1863 Felipe Espinosa (along with two cousins) went on a killing spree, murdering more than 30 Anglos in the area in retaliation for relatives killed in the Mexican–American War. A detachment of soldiers from Ft. Garland, as well as several posses, attempted to capture the brothers, but succeeded only in killing one brother, who was quickly replaced by a cousin. Eventually, Colonel Sam Tappan, the commanding officer of Ft. Garland, requested Tobin’s help in bringing Espinosas’ reign of terror to an end. He provided Tobin with a detachment of 15 soldiers, but Tobin left them at camp, as they made too much noise on the trail. He tracked the Espinosas to a camp and shot them. He cut off their heads and carried them in a sack back to Ft. Garland as proof of his success. When asked by Tappan how his trip had gone, he replied, “So-so”, then rolled the heads out of the sack and across the floor. The government had posted a reward for several thousand dollars (Dead or Alive) for the Espinosas, but he never collected the full amount. The governor of Colorado gave him a coat like Kit Carson’s and the @usarmy gave him a Henry rifle. He explored much of southern Colorado, including the Pueblo area. He was 1 of only 2 men to escape alive from the siege of Turley’s Mill and Distillery during the Taos Revolt.
