The Welders – Our Own Oddities 1977-81. Bachelor Records. “The Welders were an all-female pop punk band from St. Louis, MO. Formed by teenagers in 1975; they started playing shows in 1976, in one of the toughest climates to get booked for bands playing original material. The Welders bonded over their love of The Monkees, The Beatles and early glam rock. The comedy of the National Lampoon Radio Hour and the Marx Brothers were just as big of an influence. The Welders played several shows in the St. Louis metro area and eventually caught the attention of a local photographer and newspaper owner. He financed a recording session in 1979, with plans to release a four song EP. The newspaper folded, and all that survived was a cassette copy of the recordings. The Welders continued for a couple more years after recording the EP. They had brief line up changes, and added an organ which shifted their sound more towards a ‘60s garage pop sound. They were ahead of their time again, pre-dating most of the neo-garage explosion. By 1981, the band had moved on to other interests. In 2010 BDR Records, issued that previously unreleased EP. This new collection includes a newly remastered and improved version of the 1979 EP tracks, along with other studio, rehearsal and live recordings. February 11, 1984 would have been our first show at the notorious punk club Bernard Pub, St. Louis. We only got as far as Bloomington, IL before our van gave out at a McDonald's. The road service thought it was an electrical module, but it turned out to be the timing chain. We hoped a Greyhound back to Chicago and picked up the van after repairs were made. Inside are letters about William Burroughs, a Get Smart! interview, and feature on the B-Lovers, another St. Louis band. Nothing in this world beats playing music. I've been submerged in this since childhood. Dad playing me records. Traveling to shows although my mom was pissed about it most of the time. I wouldn't trade any of the moments for anything. All the people I've met who like me, are just trying to cope in this crazy ass world and enjoy community, a sense of belonging and music gives us that. And on the other side, playing is something so special to me. It's my time where I completely forget about the hopelessness I feel from time to time, the anxiety and the shit going on in our world. It's my time to lose myself and be free of worldly problems. I am grateful for these moments and the opportunities to play with multiple musicians the last 16 years of my life.
