When Athanasius was a young boy, the bishop of Alexandria caught him & some other boys “playing church.” Athanasius himself was pretending to be a bishop, & had baptized his friends. Bishop Alexander, after questioning the young Athanasius, decided that the Baptisms were sacramentally valid. (In the case of Baptism there are some circumstances where a lay person can validly baptize.) The bishop then recommended that Athanasius’s parents should raise him to the vocation of the priesthood. Athanasius became the deacon assistant to the bishop himself…when a theological controversy led to the 1st worldwide Christian council, the Council of Nicaea in the year 325, Athanasius went along as Bishop Alexander’s right-hand man. Even before the Council of Nicaea, Athanasius had demonstrated his theological brilliance by writing, among other things, his famous treatise, On the #Incarnation of the Word (that is, the Logos). He was the #theologian who explained & solidified the Church’s #orthodox understanding of who #JesusChrist really was & is & became the Church’s greatest spokesman for orthodoxy. The creed that was written at the Council of Nicaea was not quite as complete as what we now know as the Nicene Creed — it was completed at the 2nd ecumenical Council of #Constantinople in the year 381, but Athanasius’s work set the stage for the further clarification of the doctrine of the #Trinity & the completed version of the Creed. Athanasius wrote many important theological documents, including The Defense of the Nicene Council, which remains today one of the greatest theological treatises ever produced in the Church. Athanasius played a decisive part in the standardization of the canon of Scripture. Therefore, it should not be surprising that we should ask how Athanasius himself approached Scripture, & what he understood it to be. #Catholic #feastday #AthanasianCreed #Tradition #theology #traditionalCatholic #StAthanasiusofAlexandria #Bishop of #Alexandria #SaintAthanasius #councilofnicea #Trinitarian #DoctoroftheChurch #latinmass #fssp #NiceneCouncil #orthodoxy #BlessedTrinity #God #Jesus #HolySpirit #HolyGhost #pray #truth

St. Athanasius (296-373 A.D.) was Bishop of Alexandria and served in that role for 46 years. He was a participant in the Council of Nicea in 325 A.D. and did much of the theological work which supported the condemnation of the Arian heresy and the formulation of the Nicene Creed. He is a Doctor of the Catholic Church. St. Athanasius composed the following prayer to the Virgin Mary: It is becoming for you, O Mary, to be mindful of us, as you stand near Him who bestowed upon you all graces, for you are the Mother of God and our Queen. Come to our aid for the sake of the King, the Lord God and Master who was born of you. For this reason you are called “Full of Grace.” Be mindful of us, most holy Virgin, and bestow on us gifts from the riches of your graces, O Virgin full of grace. Athanasius was the greatest champion of Catholic belief on the subject of the Incarnation that the Church has ever known, & in his lifetime earned the characteristic title of “Father of Orthodoxy,” by which he has been distinguished ever since. While the chronology of his career still remains for the most part a hopelessly involved problem, the fullest material for an account of the main achievements of his life will be found in his collected writings & in the contemporary records of his time...From first to last he cared greatly for one thing & one thing only: the integrity of his Catholic creed. The religion it engendered in him was obviously … of a passionate & consuming sort. It began & ended in devotion to the divinity of Jesus Christ. - Catholic Encyclopedia (1912) - Classic multi-volume reference on “the constitution, doctrine, discipline, & history of the Catholic Church.” #Catholic #feastday #AthanasianCreed #Tradition #theology #traditionalCatholic #StAthanasiusofAlexandria #Bishop of #Alexandria #SaintAthanasius #councilofnicea #trinity #Trinitarian #DoctoroftheChurch #JesusChrist #latinmass #fssp #NiceneCouncil #Constantinople #orthodoxy #BlessedTrinity #God #Jesus #HolySpirit #pray #truth

"[Jesus'] body was for Him not a limitation, but an instrument, so that He was both in it and in all things, and outside all things, resting in the Father above. At one and the same time—this is the wonder—as man He was a human life, and as Word He was sustaining the life of the universe, and as Son He was in constant union with the Father." –St. Athanasius of Alexandria #stathanasiusofalexandria Today's Meditation “See, you’re bought at a great price. We’re told that in Scripture over and over and over. Jesus died for you! And, because He bought you at a great price, you have to understand that you’re never alone. You are very, very special to God. But some of you who don’t understand that think that God doesn’t care. I get that feeling myself sometimes. I’ve said to Our Lord, “Look, don’t You care? Whose side are You on?” I have myself been disheartened. But, in spite of the difficulties within and without, I try to keep my eyes on Jesus and know that Our Lord and Savior loves me, knows me, and has chosen me to be great in His eyes – to be holy, to be saintly, to be compassionate, and to be good.” —Mother Angelica, p. 44 #morningoffering #catholicsaints #catholics

You will not see anyone who is truly striving after his spiritual advancement who is not given to spiritual reading." –St. Athanasius of Alexandria Today's Meditation “Christianity asserts that every individual human being is going to live forever, and this must be either true or false. Now there are a good many things which would not be worth bothering about if I were going to live only seventy years, but which I had better bother about very seriously if I am going to live for ever.” —C.S.

St. Athanasius was a staunch defender of the Faith when the Church and its belief in the divinity of Christ were being attacked by Arius and his followers. St. Athanasius attended the Council of Nicea from which we have the Nicean Creed in which we proclaim, “I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten not made, consubstantial with the Father; through Him all things were made.” St. Athanasius has been named a Doctor of the Church. He is the patron saint of theologians and faithful Orthodox and Roman Catholic Christians. St. Athanasius please pray for the new owner of this rosary. May this person become a true and steadfast defender of the divinity of Christ and of the lives of unborn babies. Please pray that this person and all of us have the graces of perseverance and fearlessness that these defenders need. 🙏🏼❤️🙏🏼 This rosary is made from the brown mission beads of a broken rosary. The Our Father beads are from a different broken pro-life rosary and are to remind one of each precious life in the womb. The centerpiece and crucifix are donated new. The St. Benedict crucifix has its special exorcism blessing of protection from evil, and the beautiful Sacred Heart of Jesus centerpiece has an image of the Holy Family on its reverse side. I sincerely pray that this rosary will be a blessing to its new owner and that many rosaries will be prayed for faith and life. I ask God to bless all those who contributed the items for its making and all those who might have used the items previously. St. Athanasius, please pray for us. St. Benedict, please pray for us. Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us. 2 MAY 2022 MONDAY OF THE 3RD WEEK OF EASTER    (SAINT ATHANASIUS, BISHOP, DOCTOR) ____ENTRANCE ANTIPHON CF. SIR 15: 5____ In the midst of the Church he opened his mouth, and the Lord filled him with the spirit of wisdom and understanding and clothed him in a robe of glory, alleluia. _______________ COLLECT _______________ Almighty ever-living God, who raised up the Bishop Saint Athanasius as an outstanding champion of your Son’s divinity, mercifully grant, that, rejoicing in his teaching and his protection, we may never cease to grow in knowledge and love of you. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. ________FIRST READING ACTS 6:8-15________ THEY COULD NOT WITHSTAND THE WISDOM AND THE SPIRIT WITH WHICH HE SPOKE. Stephen, filled with grace and power, was working great wonders and signs among the people. Certain members of the so-called Synagogue of Freedmen, Cyreneans, and Alexandrians, and people from Cilicia and Asia, came forward and debated with Stephen, but they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he spoke. Then they instigated some men to say, “We have heard him speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God.” They stirred up the people, the elders, and the scribes, accosted him, seized him, and brought him before the Sanhedrin. They presented false witnesses who testified, “This man never stops saying things against this holy place and the law. For we have heard him claim that this Jesus the Nazorean will destroy this place and change the customs that Moses handed down to us.” All those who sat in the Sanhedrin looked intently at him and saw that his face was like the face of an angel. ______PSALM 119:23-24, 26-27, 29-30______ Blessed are they who follow the law of the Lord! __GOSPEL ACCLAMATION MATTHEW 4: 4b__ Alleluia, alleluia. One does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes forth from the mouth of God. Alleluia, alleluia.

Saint Athanasius the Great, Archbishop of Alexandria Born in Alexandria in 296, he had from childhood an inclination to the spiritual life. He was a deacon with Archbishop Alexander and accompanied him to Nicaea, to the First Ecumenical Council in 325. At this Council, Athanasius became famed for his learning, his devotion and his zeal for Orthodoxy, and contributed very greatly to the containing of the Arian heresy and the strengthening of Orthodoxy. After the death of Alexander, Athanasius was chosen as Archbishop of Alexandria. He remained in his archiepiscopal calling for more than forty years, although he was not on the archiepiscopal throne the whole time. He was persecuted by heretics through almost the whole of his life, particularly by the Emperors Constantius, Julian and Valens, by Bishop Eusebius of Nicomedia and many others, and by the heretic Arius and his followers. He was forced to hide from his persecutors in a well, a grave, private houses and the deserts. Twice he was forced to flee to Rome. Only just before his death did he have a peaceful period as a good shepherd with his flock, which truly loved him. There are few saints who have been so callously slandered and so criminally persecuted as Saint Anthanasius. But his great soul endured all with patience for the love of Christ and at last emerged victorious from all these terrible and lengthy struggles. He often went to St Antony for advice and moral support, revering him as his spiritual father. He suffered greatly for the truth, until the Lord gave him rest in His kingdom as His faithful servant, in the year 373. #god #glorytogod #jesus #jesuschrist #christ #saintathanasiusofalexandria #saintathanasiusthegreat #stathanasiusthegreat #stathanasiusofalexandria #archbishopofalexandria #alexandria #persecution #victory #valens #constantius #eusebiusofnicomedia #arius #emperorjulian #saintofgod #athanasius #holy #struggle
