2024 Milky Way Photographer of the Year... Um what?! I don’t really know what to say other than this is still unbelievable to me even after sitting on this news for the last month and a half. Since getting into night photography in 2020, I’ve looked forward to this yearly list from Dan Zafra at @capturetheatlas. I think of myself as a just a hobbyist and still beginner-ish (although I definitely have aspirations of doing so much more and being half as great as those that I admire), and now to be in the company of some seriously amazing photographers is a little bit like walking into a room and thinking, “Wait 👀, am I in the right place?!” I’m truly honored, excited, and a little bit speechless. 🥹 Thank you, Dan! And @kristinerosephotography, all of the “we’re almost theres” getting out to the hoodoos were totally worth it to get this shot!!! Lol. 🫰🏻 I originally posted this on June 22, 2023. My favorite image from the NPAN (@nationalparksatnight) Martha's Vineyard Lighthouses at Night Workshop was taken at Edgartown Light House at 2:50 am after a long, fantastic night. As you can see, I had to quickly take this single-row, four-image panorama before the low-level cloud formation moved into the Core region of the Milky Way. This time of the year, the Milky Way arches high above the horizon, so there is no chance of a full MW reflection in the water. I'm a couple of months late with this seeing as how it's not winter anymore, but I really like the winter Milky Way - maybe even more than the galactic core. 🫢 This was also my second time using the Benro Polaris for panos. The first time was only just the night before this. And all thanks to Dan Zafra, the Benro Polaris is no longer just a very expensive paperweight and I actually know how to use it! The Milky Way core rises above the horizon behind the Edgartown Lighthouse. I had a wonderful week shooting lighthouses at night in Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard. I attended a night photography workshop with ten other photogs presented by National Parks At Night (NPAN) with workshop leaders Gabriel Biderman, @ruinism and Chris Nicholson @photographingnationalparks. It was a fantastic week with lots of learning and chasing light and stars. I would highly recommend attending one of NPAN’s workshops. Way over the Moon. We only had a few hours of the Milky Way being in the right position before moonrise, and I was having ...issues. I just wasn't feeling it. The compositions were there, but I wasn't seeing them. So I wondered off to see what else I could find. The cliffs and the river valley looked nice, but kinda meh. And then the glow from the moon began. And there it was. No stacking, no tracking, no blending foreground and sky. Just several single shots as the moon rose under the Milky Way. Many thanks to @clanger_mcbanger for teaching me how to make the most of the finished shot. His desire to teach and enthusiasm to post-process makes him an ace teacher. Definitely worth bringing an apple for. Worm Moon tests. I needed something with which to test my 'repaired' tracker against. I figured I'd throw a softball at it and had it track the (near) full moon.
