In the 1️⃣st Year of Let’s Play Music, lines and spaces of the staff take on meaning as children are taught to read steps and skips; ups and downs. An awareness of how the staff works is internalized before children are required to memorize the letter name of specific lines or spaces. In the 2️⃣nd Year, intervals and chords are added to staff reading skills as well as select note names such as middle B, C, and D. The 3️⃣rd Year adds the letter names of all the lines and spaces of treble and bass clef. Here are 5 fun ways your child can work on increasing their finger strength to get them ready for future lessons: 1️⃣ 𝗦𝗣𝗢𝗡𝗚𝗘𝗦 Make a game of filling containers (perhaps during bath time) with water by squeezing a soggy sponge into the container. Squeezing strengthens wrist muscles and finger flexors. 2️⃣ 𝗣𝗟𝗔𝗬-𝗗𝗢𝗛 Sculpting play-doh into your child's favorite animal or food is a great way to strengthen their hand muscles & will keep them entertained for hours! 3️⃣ 𝗦𝗣𝗥𝗔𝗬 𝗕𝗢𝗧𝗧𝗟𝗘𝗦 Make cool designs on the sidewalk by squirting water on the cement. Many traditional piano teachers believe that the right time to start children in piano lessons is around age 7 or 8, because traditional piano lessons require letter recognition and more developed finger strength. BUT did you know there is a learning “window” when the brain is most able to absorb knowledge and ability? For instance, the brain is most receptive to music instruction from birth to age 9!! So, waiting to start piano lessons until age 8 means losing most of that formative window, which doesn’t take advantage of all those years of prime education.
