There’s a lie that Satan likes to throw at single women: If you’re just ____ enough (holy enough, content enough, pure enough…), then God will owe you a husband. Sis, God doesn’t “owe” us anything. He’s not a slot machine where we put in good behavior and He pays us with a husband (or whatever thing we’re desiring). On the contrary, we owe God our lives. Every part of us. Once we get saved, we are bought with a price and belong to Him! ♥️ If we hold back parts of ourselves from the Lord, not wanting Him to have control, we’re trying to “save our life” as the Bible says. But friend, that’s the surest way to lose it. As a single woman I often experienced this feeling. I have also experienced it now as a married woman, only this time knowing the one I’m missing. The reminders I shared in this post are the same ones I give to myself whenever this happens. And by the time I finish telling God about my feelings, casting my cares on Him and letting Him comfort me, and then thanking and praising Him for what I know to be true, the weight has always lifted from my heart. I’ve received a couple questions about this topic and thought I would share some ideas. ♥️ And to clarify…. What I’m not saying is that you should live in fear and not pursue something because “what if my future husband wouldn’t want me to…” I’m not encouraging single-woman-paralysis, in which unmarried women don’t pursue buying a house or getting a dog or taking a job in case their future husband wouldn’t like it. What I’m also not saying is that single women shouldn’t have a career, or create a full and fruitful life! Of course you need a way to support yourself, a way to use your skills for the glory of God, and you should not sit at home twirling your thumbs and waiting for Prince Charming to show up and give you a life. (“Prince Charming” may not even be in your future!) BUT IF it’s one of your main desires in life to eventually be a wife and mom, the decisions you make now can affect the probability of that happening. Of course there are exceptions. But in general, these four questions are meant to help you see if what you’re pursuing is 1) in line with and setting you up for where you eventually want to be 2) from a pure motive and 3) in alignment with your feminine design. In singleness you can grieve something you never had: the spouse you prayed for, the children you wanted, the future you planned, the dreams you had. While grief is often about mourning the LOSS of something, you can also grieve an outcome you wanted that hasn’t happened yet. When that outcome is a spouse and you remain single, it can start to feel like being in a constant state of grief. Mourning your unmet desires may be necessary but you don’t want to get STUCK in grief. If you are stuck in grief you’ll never be able to live abundantly in singleness. Although singleness was not His original design, although we humans brought sin into the world and corrupted His perfect system, God is so kind that He has redeemed singleness through Christ and made it a good gift. 🙌🏼♥️ Singleness in Christ is just as blessed of a state as Christ-centered marriage. (1 Cor. 7) Additionally, He redeems even the painful, “affliction” parts of marriage and singleness and works them out for our good! The Psalmist believed that his affliction was a good thing: “It is good for me that I have been afflicted; that I might learn thy statutes.” The carnal mind cannot understand how affliction could ever be a good thing. Even though we aren’t deserving, God still loves to pour out blessings & gifts on His children. He invites us to ask for these gifts. And He gives them freely, not based on our merit but on Christ’s. And this my friends, is cause for rejoicing!! ♥️♥️♥️ What a wonderful God we serve! Clarifications: 1.) I’m not talking about our inherent value as humans in this post. Of course we all have value as people made in the image of God. 2.) I’m not saying that you aren’t deserving of just and loving treatment from a boyfriend or husband. He is to love you as Christ loves the church, even if/when you don’t act in a way that is deserving of it! It should be yet another picture of Christ’s constant love & faithfulness for us even when we fail Him. 3.) Some raw confessions about my experience with marriage thus far. ♥️ I knew it before, but I really know it now… marriage is not satisfying. Only Jesus is. Disclaimer: I use the words “satisfaction” and “fulfilled” etc. in ultimate terms. I’m saying that ULTIMATELY, nothing can fulfill me but Christ. Yes, marriage, food, friends, work etc bring certain levels of fulfillment to my life. But they cannot be the ultimate *source* of my happiness. I find that the more full I am with Jesus, the more the things He’s given me bring joy/fulfillment. But the less I am delighting in Him, the more empty the good things He’s given me become. This post is also in no way implying that I don’t have a happy marriage or a wonderful husband. When I used to see the engagement posts, gushy husband appreciation posts, baby announcements, etc, and feel myself beginning to fall down the spiral of comparison and self pity, I would do 4 things: 1.) Thank God for blessing her with those good things. 2.) Praise God that He is enough for me every day of my life. 3.) Give Him my desire for marriage, telling Him I wanted His best for me whatever that was. 4.) Ask Him to bring me a godly man. And when I was tempted to think that her gift of marriage was better than mine of singleness, I would remind myself of what Paul had told singles about marriage: “But and if thou marry, thou hast not sinned; and if a virgin marry, she hath not sinned. Nevertheless such shall have trouble in the flesh: but I spare you.” 1 Corinthians 7:28 I would remind myself that she was going to have “trouble in the flesh,” that marriage was not going to be her happily ever after. I did this not to be weirdly critical or negative, but to be realistic and protect myself from believing the lie that marriage is ideal or better than singleness. If you’re like me, then you hate to admit that you thought once you were content in singleness, God would automatically provide a spouse! Even as I started blogging and working on my book I thought “oh once I finish my book then God will miraculously drop a husband from the heavens” but why, why would that happen? Being content in singleness does not equal God giving you a spouse. Just because I’m content and obeying Him now, doesn’t mean God owes me a spouse. There’s no guarantee. Having a close relationship with God is very necessary in the process of finding a Godly partner to do life with. When we are satisfied in our relationship with God, where His desires are our desires, we will not allow the desire for marriage get so strong that we settle for a guy who is complacent in His Christian life. A guy who doesn’t really care about the things of God, but more about his truck, job or whatever it is. We will look for someone who we could go to war with. Someone who will fight alongside you against the devil’s attacks. Satan hates marriage and he will do anything to break it apart. For many of us, new year means new resolutions, new goals, new targets, etc. As you set new targets this year, we want to challenge you with one: INCLUDE God in EVERYTHING. Proverbs 3:5-6 tells us to trust in the Lord with all our hearts and lean not on OUR OWN understanding, but to KNOW & ACKNOWLEDGE God in all we do. . In your singleness, acknowledge God. As you pursue to be content in your state of being alone, acknowledge God. As you think of going out on a date with that guy/girl, acknowledge and include God. When you're not too sure if you should keep things platonic or move to the next stage, acknowledge and include God. . This year, don't leave God out of it. PART TWO 🫶🏼 Sisters, when I encourage you to “intentionally seek marriage,” these are the types of things I’m talking about. Inner healing work. Mindset & perspective shifts. Developing better communication and social skills. Growing in your understanding of men, femininity and polarity. Taking care of your physical and emotional health. There is SO much you can do to pursue marriage by simply working on *you* and becoming the most whole person you can be. The need for growth never ends, and it certainly hasn’t stopped for me. If anything, I see even more clearly now how much I need to learn about respecting & communicating with men, etc. But I’m so so thankful for the work I put in before I ever met my husband! I know that it helped me to be the type of woman he was looking for. Not only that, and most importantly, it has opened doors and allowed me to serve God more effectively. The devotional I’m launching in January (Lord willing) is a culmination of all the the things I learned in my own journey toward marriage.
