Sometimes it turns out places your parents talk about as cool actually still are. My folks met in Buffalo in the late 1960s, when the State University of NY stacked its under-the-radar English department there with scholarly giants. We grew up hearing about the era from friends who stayed in our circle, even in L.A. So, an opportunity to check out the expanded @buffaloakgartmuseum by @omanewyork and other Buffalo landmarks like @themartinhouse @kleinhansmusichall (almost like stepping into a Josef Albers color square) #silocitybuffalo — and visit with our beloved 93-year-old family friend, a retired prof and poet who lives on his own in the lively Elmwood Village neighborhood — was a fine reason to go to the city I hadn't been to since @anneswanbk took me during Senior Week in ‘96 and we had an exciting casual #anidifranco sighting. Those smoky skies set a tone this past June but didn’t shade my impressions. (btw I did have beef on weck, did not eat Buffalo hot wings.) Many thanks @mayakach for running my approx 1,700-word piece on being #inthebuff @travelandleisure. 🦬 🤎

From left to right: The Vermont Tugboat - Originally built in 1913 for the Great Lakes Towing Company; still in service for the same company. The S.S. Colombia - The only early 20th century passenger steamship still in existence. Built in 1902. Originally operated in Detroit, it fell into disuse/neglect and has been docked in Buffalo since 2015 while it awaits further restoration for eventual use on the Hudson River, at least according to the initial plan. Marine ‘A’ Elevator - A 1925 Transfer Elevator, now part of the Silo City Complex (https://www.silo.city/marine-a). A portion of the Lake & Rail Elevator - Built primarily between 1927 and 1930, Lake & Rail ended up as part of Silo City for a time, but was sold off in 2006 and rehabbed. Silo City is a unique cultural and ecological campus that inspires creativity & community within the historical legacy of Buffalo’s grain silos. Since 2012, we have hosted poetry readings, music festivals, theater, art shows, and film crews. In June of 2018 we opened a new bar and music venue, Duende. Currently, the site is under construction. ARTS & CULTURE From the Silo City Reading Series to live music festivals to immersive theater, Silo City has hosted compelling arts programming in Buffalo, NY for over 8 years. ECOLOGICAL RESTORATION Our Director of Ecology, Josh Smith, is regenerating the former industrial site. Soils are enlivened with compost produced on site, made with 110 tons of food waste diverted from landfills each year. Meandering trails allow visitors to observe and experience the grounds, the monoliths of the silos providing a striking backdrop for nature photography. It is a place that is “always becoming.” This bend of the Buffalo River — where Silo City is seated — was part of the historic Buffalo Creek Reservation, and home to regional indigenous populations for centuries prior to its use for grain storage and milling.
