Listed $240,000! Kip Wagner’s personal treasure coin featured in National Geographic! Kip was the original founder/ member of the Real Eight co that found the 1715 Fleet Shipwreck! Following the Real Eight Company’s discoveries of gold from the 1715 Fleet in the early 1960s, Kip Wagner embarked on a mission to showcase his findings. He conceived the idea of featuring an article in National Geographic along with a book, both containing identical photos. Wagner took pride in exhibiting coins he had preserved, particularly highlighting two Mexican 8 escudos coins between his thumbs and forefingers. One displayed the shield side, while the other showed the cross side, with the former being the focal point. What Wagner may not have been aware of was the exceptional beauty of this coin, attributed to its origin from the same dies as the elegant Royals (galanos) of that era. There’s a possibility that this specific coin, despite its slightly smaller and less uniform flan, could have been a test strike, given its impeccable centering and crisp details. The presence of quatrefoil ornaments above and below the oMJ and VIII, along with “daggers” in the tressure around the cross, signifies its royal status. However, the peripheries, including the date, retain the flat and beveled characteristics typical of coins from that period. Enhanced by a gentle toning over its abundant luster, coupled with its distinguished history, this coin deserves recognition as one of the prime treasures salvaged from the 1715 Fleet. Its prominence is further established by its inclusion in the January 1965 issue of National Geographic under the article “Drowned Galleons Yield Spanish Gold,” and in Kip Wagner’s book “Pieces of Eight” from 1966. Its provenance is documented through certificates, invoices from Frank Sedwick dating back to 1990, and a letter establishing its origin from the estate of Kip Wagner, solidifying its prestigious pedigree.

If you’ve ever wanted a cool shipwreck silver coin then this one might be for you. This super high grade Ducatoon from 1733 is amongst the best quality from this wreck. The Vliegenthart, sunk in 1735 off Zeeland, the Netherlands. The East Indiaman ship, called the Flying Deer in Dutch, sunk off the western coast of the Netherlands. The area known as Zeeland consists of many islands and peninsulas. This ship, along with its sister ship the “Anna Catherina”, sunk after hitting a sandbar during strong winds, a spring tide, and pilot error. Both ships were lost and all crew members were killed. 1730 N Peru Cob 8 Escudos 1733 Fleet Shipwreck With West Bay Trading Company COA. Not For Sale. Ex. Heritage Auctions Auction # 3005 Lot # 22083 May 29, 2009. The 1733 Fleet, like the 1715 Fleet, was another entire Spanish convoy (except for one ship) lost in a hurricane off Florida. The lesser severity of the 1733 hurricane (which struck the fleet on July 15) & the shallowness of the wrecksites in the Keys, however, made for many survivors & even left four ships in good enough condition to be re-floated & sent back to Havana. A very successful salvage effort by the Spanish soon commenced, bringing up even more than the 12 million pesos of precious cargo on the Fleet’s manifest (thanks to the usual contraband). The wrecks themselves are spread across 80 miles, from north of Key Largo down to south of Duck Key. In contrast to the 1715 Fleet, & because of the extensive Spanish salvage in the 1730s, the finds by modern divers have been modest. Nevertheless, the 1733 Fleet has been a significant source for some of the rare Mexican milled “pillar dollars” of 1732-1733, as well as the transitional “klippe”-type coins of 1733. #TreasureTuesday - Discovered on the Atocha site in March 2009 This "Silver Gilt Rosewater Platter" was discovered on the Nuestra Senora de Atocha and has a unique Bishop’s Coat of Arms. It is rare to find such a unique piece with such detailed markings. This type of platter was used by the Church to hold aromatic water scented with rose petals, known as rosewater. Clergy members would cleanse their hands in the rose water before performing clerical ceremonies. Senior Conservator, John Corcoran discovered some very intriguing information about the platter. The marking in the center of the plate bears a crest. Preliminary research indicates that the markings are likely those of a Bishop. There is a hat and a cross at the top of the shield along with a set of six tassels on each side of the shield. The Church has a ranking system much like the military and each ranking is symbolized by a different number of tassels. #FlashbackFriday On April 16, 2011, an approximately 2-pound solid gold bar was found on the Atocha wreck site by the crew of the JB Magruder. The bar is 12.5 inches long. Remarkably, this bar is unmarked, leading to speculation that it was being smuggled as contraband aboard the ship (possibly in a boot). Many of the Atocha gold bars previously found were marked with karat stamps indicating the purity of the gold and Spanish royal tax stamps, indicating the 20% tax had been paid on the bar. Listed $64,500 FINEST KNOWN! This piece has an insane double date, 4 digits in the Legend ‘ANO 1710’ most years have 2-3 digits. Peru 8 escudos, 1710 H, four-digit date and HISPANIAR in legend, NGC MS 63 (1715 Fleet Shipwreck Label, “top pop”), ex-Ubilla-Echevez. 26.86 grams. overall one of the nicest Lima cob 8 Escudos we have ever seen and surely a candidate for finest strike known for this first issue to bear a second date in the legend. Incredibly broad flan with full crown and legends (bold full date in four digits, also king’s ordinal V), the inner details also full (choice cross-lions-castles, the pillars-and-waves slightly doubled on left side) and dripping with luster (tied with two others for finest in NGC census). Curiously, it appears that the E of REX in the legend is punched over a retrograde E (rotated 180 degrees), based on position of serifs (which seems to be the case for Tauler 235a as well). Crowning its virtues is this coin’s link to the very first offering of Real Eight Co. coins in 1964, dubbed the “Ubilla-Echevez Collection” (named after the Captains of the 1715 Fleet) in order not to conflict with “first rights” given to National Geographic in their classic January 1965 article “Drowned Galleons Yield Spanish Gold.” After that auction, apparently the coin went to Mel Fisher, who gave it a certificate, and then to one of his investors, the last time it changed hands until now. From the 1715 Fleet, with (small) hand-signed Mel Fisher certificate dated September 17, 1966, pedigreed to the Henry Christensen Ubilla-Echevez auction of October 1964 (lot 152).

Color-changing sapphires can have many different colors however some color variations are far rarer than others. The green color variation is one of those rare colors, while most are blue to purple which doesn’t show much of a color change at all. This specimen changes from a Greenish Blue to a Pinkish Purple with absolutely NO heating! Most stones are heated to increase the quality of the color. For example, unheated Burmese Rubies are far more valuable if they are quality stones due to roughly 80% of Burmese Rubies being heated to get a more vibrant color. When speaking with the owner of the mine in Montana he really conveys the rarity of a stone of this caliber, “This is a one of a kind rare rare rare gem! Clean clean! In 20 years doing this and no one can ever make another like it. The size must be large and clean, two things that make it rare. Under daylight equivalent (fluorescent or LED daylight-balanced) light, the typical color-change sapphire’s basic color ranges from blue to violet. Under incandescent light, it ranges from violetish purple to strongly reddish purple. Some rare color-change sapphires change from green in daylight to reddish brown in incandescent light. When gem experts judge color-change sapphires, they describe the color change as weak, moderate, or strong. The strength of the stone’s color change is the most important quality factor affecting its value.
Diquis Croc or Gecko 700-1400AD $7,950 In their quest to confiscate as much gold as possible, Conquistadors looting Mexico in the name of Fernando II of Aragon (Cortez invaded Mexico 1519-1521) sent Pedro De Alvarado south in 1523 to subdue Guatemala - the “department” under Spanish governance that included Guatemala, Costa Rica, El Salvador, Nicaragua and other bits of central America. Alvarado pushed into El Salvador in 1524. The converging groups of Conquistadors clashed, believing that there must be a lot in the region worth fighting over, but they were wrong. The entire Central American region was nowhere near as rich in gold and silver as Mexico, Colombia and Peru. THIS is the reason that the Guatemala department never produced anything as impressive of quantities of gold escudos for the Spanish crown. The principal reason why there is relatively little gold in Central America is geological. Much of Central America consists of uplifted land that is part of the “Caribbean Plate”, a thick oceanic section of the Earth’s crust that is less dense and more gold-poor than most continental tectonic plates. The heat of friction from this subduction causes the volcanism that is prevalent in Central America – Costa Rica is riddled with volcanos, magma is a poor source of heavy metals like gold. This doesn’t mean that there wasn’t gold in Costa Rica. Originally it was plentiful. However, Costa Rica is only the size of Maryland and, after the better part of a millennium of mining, what gold that was left wasn’t easy to get at. Most native gold in Costa Rica is “alluvial,” existing as nuggets and flakes eroded from their original strata by streams and rivers. The gold so obtained only partially satisfied the growing local demand for “liquid sunshine” or “the tears of God”, however, and much of the gold used in Costa Rica came into the region from Mexico and Colombia in exchange for pottery, textiles and agricultural products. This was particularly the case by the time the Conquistadors arrived – the deceptively bountiful gold displayed by the natives that greeted Columbus and that led to Costa Rica being named the “Rich Coast” was by that time largely imported.
