My late grandparents on their new land in 1951. They migrated from Powhatan, Virginia to Long Island, NY along with thousands of other Southerners in the 1940’s. They were part of the great migration of Black Southerners to Eastern Long Island to work on potato farms. A migration that is not talked about enough. It lasted decades and many unjust challenges and living conditions existed for a lot of the workers.  After 11 years of farming on Long Island, they decided to stay and settle in Eastern Long Island and purchase a home with acres of farmland. I used graphite pencils on paper with an added twist for the background.  This drawing represents a part of MY American history.  I spent the bulk of my childhood on this land. Commercial buildings now surround the neighborhood as their house, now vacant and untouched property sits there nestled amongst the busy streets that used to be quiet streets. We are in a time and place where reclaiming this land is essential for our family and our personal history. This land was purchased off of the labor and history of potato farming. The memories that this land holds are priceless. I honor them with this piece. And, continue to bring their memory to present day. Faith Evans is from Eastern Long Island. She had a passion for art since she was a little girl. Her dream of going to art school was not an option when she graduated from high school. So instead, after college she jumped into a career in advertising in Los Angeles. Decades later, she returned home to Long Island with her... A little Long Island History. This Morning I want to honor and shine light on my 6th Great Grandmother Tamer Wren. It is said that this painting of Tamer was that was painted in 1830 by the famous artist Shepard Alonzo Mount. They say this is painting is one of the most important work of art created on Long Island, because it is the ONLY professional portrait created of a Long Islander recently freed from slavery. It is said that this painting is one of the loveliest portraits of a person of color ever made by a white artist in the 19th century. Tamer ended up having a daughter with a Shinnecock man named Simeon Wren, my 5th Great Grandmother Maria Rosco Wren who ended up Marrying and having kids with my 5th Great Grandfather Levi Phillips He was a Famous Medicine Man of Long Island he would walk and catch rides from Brooklyn to Montauk to treat his patients. He is a decendant of King Philip aka Metacom. Metacomet was a Wampanoag whose tribe sought to live in harmony with the colonists at first. He became sachem (chief) in 1662. He led the 1st Indian war and uprising against the colonists the goal was to stop Puritan expansion. It was a bloody war and he was killed in 1676 and many of his family was sold into slavery in the Barbados. He stood up and fought for something, and I am proud to be a direct decendant of these men and these women. I am not sure who Tamer Wren parents were I don't know if she was a Native American slave born on Long Island or if she was a Black Slave born from somewhere else. She just might be a mix or both. But one thing I do know is she is beautiful. There must of been something special about her that someone one would pay to get a picture of her painted. If anyone has anyone informed on the people I mentioned I would love to connect and learn more. #nativeamericanheritage #Setalcott #Wampanoag #Unkechaug #shinnecock #kingphilip #metacomet #medicineman #indigenous #longisland #nativepride #shepardalonzomount #tamerwren #longroadtofreedom #longislandhistory #blackhistory #indigenoushistory #nativeamericanheritage #oilpainting

My work is rooted in searching for my own heritage, creating my own ritual centered around collection and repetitive making. As a biracial person with an Asian immigrant parent, I experience a sense of displacement from both my familial lineage as well as the dominant culture. I attempt to create a sense of connection to my cultural roots by exploring my human connection to the earth through natural materials. Using these materials I reimagine temples and monuments from my culture. By combining these disparate sources with my own lived experiences, I create a visual map of my personal history. All works are made through the act of collection - from long walks along the river, trips to the thrift store, trips to Michigan, Vermont and Maine as well as walks around my neighborhood. Through this collection practice I cultivate a sense of wonder and curiosity and as a result, the work is imbued with a sense of admiration for the world around me. Using traditional materials like plaster bandage, paper mache, and paper clay in a child-like way releases my process from constraining rules or preconceived notions of how the material should be used. They can be molded and shaped into various forms and structures by hand, allowing for more open ended play and experimentation. Sculpting natural and malleable materials by hand connects me to my ancestral roots and I commune with the makers that came before me. Small objects are treated with reverence, they are protected through embedment and valued for their unique imperfections.... Shinnecock Hills Golf Club | In 1891, one hundred and fifty Shinnecock tribal members assisted in laying out the first 12 holes of what was to become the Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. Willie Dunn, Scottish Professional and course developer said several years into development; The place was dotted with Indian burial mounds and we left some of these intact as bunkers in front of the greens. We scraped out some of the mounds and made sand traps. Material from the Sebonac and Woodland period villages were found in the area; including pottery and human remains that were sent to the American Museum of Natural History and Museum of the American Indian, Heye Foundation – now NMAI. "Inspired by family legend, Black Folklore and American Slave Narratives- particularly passages that involve the crossing of water, “One More River to Cross”, addresses America's enduring legacies of colonialism and systemic racism that defines this nation’s history, while reiterating the central narrative that emerges from the referenced memoirs - the ongoing struggle for Freedom. Connecting elements from these stories while thinking about the daily episodes of police brutality that occur across the country, I contemplate both the historic and contemporary state sanctioned violence against Black communities, the approval of this violence by the general public (in the form of disregard or unsolicited advice on how Black people should “exist” in order not to be terrorized) and the absence of justice in response to these crimes. The incarnation of recently slain individuals, civil rights martyrs, Freedmen and the formerly enslaved summon the spirit of resistance in these aquatic landscapes. Drawing support and strength from our sacred texts and spiritual music, this series is about a Black experience that is deeply connected to the landscape, the idea of home and it’s intersections with water. Water becomes symbolic of Freedom whether it is in this world or the next and at the same time is evidence of social and cultural boundaries. Water has to be crossed on the journey to Freedom. My own family’s traditions revolve heavily around the pastoral landscape, lakes and rivers of my home region. These memories, experiences and sit... Rev. Paul Cuffee Gravesite | A single fenced grave marks the burial location of Reverend Paul Cuffee. This site was chosen for his burial as it was once the meeting place for the old Indian church location. It also exists within "Good Ground," the old name of Hampton Bays. Cuffee, a Shinnecock Indian, was a celebrated minister, like his grandfather Peter John, who preached to Indians of Long Island. Cuffee, during his youth, was an indentured servant to a Wading River farmer who then became an enthusiastic convert in his early 20s. Cuffee preached among Indian communities, including the Poospatuck Reservation (present day Mastic Beach); Canoe Place in Hampton Bays, and in the end, Montauk. These vigorous preacher's services were attended by large crowds. With the pandemic drastically changing our daily lives, I decided to focus on how people adapted to these changes. Last night Q&A was so good. Our Ancestors didn't fight to survive just for us to forget them. Most people don’t think about who their ancestors are. They don’t think about where they came from or how many sacrifices were made for them to get here. They don’t think about how deep the wounds that they carry are, or what to do about them. Without connection to where we come from, we are much easier to manipulate. Without the felt experience of the spiritual power of those connections, we turn our eyes towards what is offered to us from the many flashing lights of modern culture 💸 I use to be most people. Growing up I never thought about all of our rich Indigenous history here on Lond Island. I just knew I lived on a Rez and I was Unkechaug. But I am so much more, the last few years I have had a calling to connect. A calling so loud it brought me back home to my Rez to do the work, do the research, and ask the questions. One thing I learned, my Grandmother Darlene Sells-Treadwell was Native I thought she was just black. She never talked about it. She always talked about my Grandfathers Indigenous roots but never about hers. The more I digged I realized my Grandmother is just as much Native as my Grandfather Warren Treadwell. Her roots run so deep on Long Island. Her bloodline is a part of Long Island History as well. My 5th Great Grandfather Levi Phillips who is My Grandmother Darlene Sells-Treadwell 3rd Great Grandfather. He was a Famous Medicine Man of Long Island he would walk and catch rides from Brooklyn to Montauk to treat his patients. He is a decendant of King Philip aka Metacom. Artist Dominick Cocozza discusses his work, stating, "Worldbuilding is at the utmost forefront of my painting practice. I situate each of the works as an opportunity to learn from and reckon with the Guatemalan doll figure through autobiographical storytelling and positioning the work through the characters’ viewpoints. My paintings are high in chroma and relate to layers of re-imagined cultural nostalgia. The characters, thus, represent ‘avatars’ of myself and partner, who narrate and journey to spaces that may feel potentially culturally distant. Each work becomes an integral chapter forging love and advocating for a contemporary positioning of Indigeneity. Through embodied layering of identity politics and the specificity of being an Indigenous Guatemalan Transracial adoptee, my work attempts to lay a foundation for these discourses through a demystification of global cultural hybridity. Therefore, the pictures are meant to accompany a broader conversation on Indigenous and Native American visibility and displacement. The process of reclamation and various ways marginalized people accompany space inspires how I embrace worldbuilding as a positive force in building identity. My connection to Guatemalan culture has much to do with my real-world conversations with other Guatemalan-adoptees, undoc folks, and peers in these in-between spaces. Furthermore, my painting practice aspires to problem-solve in real time, addressing my contextual histories, and casting opportunities for reclaiming collective memory." Currently o... Killed Pottery | Introduction Among the general Orient period burial offerings, including fire-making kits, projectile points, hammer stones, paint stones, adzes, celts, occasional knives, drills, pendants, gorgets, and banner stones; there were also "killed" steatite stone vessels. This was among the more prominent ceremonial features found within the Orient Focus culture. All steatite vessels, except one, on all four Orient period sites had been broken or killed. Yaphank, Weeks Pond Settlement | Yaphank, a village in Brookhaven town, was originally the name of the creek south of the hamlet. A land deed signed in 1664 by Unkechaug Sachem Tobacus mentions a river called Yamphanke. In the 17th century, the Unkechaug Indians, who had their primary residence in nearby Mastic, built temporary campsites near what was later known as Weeks Pond. Winippague | Winippague is the traditional placename for what is now Bergen Island in Jamaica Bay. The alternative name is Wimbaccoe. Anthropologist William Wallace Tooker denotes that the name may translate to "a fine water-place," from wini, "fine," and -paug, "water-place." It is believed that Winippague or Bergen Island was the principal wampum manufacturing site for the Canarsie people at the time of early contact with Europeans. Arrowheads were also found on the site, which are now in the Smithsonian Institute collection near Washington, D.C. Nissaquogue | The territory of this chieftaincy was adjoined by the Matinecocks on the west and extended eastward from the Nissequogue River to Stony Brook and south to the center of the Island. Apparently, there was a disagreement for a time between the Nissequogue and Matinecock Indians concerning their boundary and, as a consequence, they did not always enjoy friendly relations. They had extensive villages at Smithtown and at several other places near the shore within the bounds of their territory. A glimpse at what postpartum support may look like: mom’s bedside table has a basket filled with snacks to choose from. She receives meals in bed and plenty of water and electrolyte refills. This keeps her nourished during nursing sessions and while she heals from birth. Easy access to necessities encourages the new parent to stay in bed and rest! It’s important that they have the least to worry about. A cheap basket can be purchased at the dollar store. Sit down with your partner, family member, friend or doula sometime before your due date and create a preferred postpartum snack list. Purchase them in bulk, bearing in mind that the plan is to stay in bed during your healing journey. Your postpartum support team will be responsible for filling this basket post-birth and replenishing when low. ⬆️ If you’re someone supporting a birthing person in any capacity, offer them this knowledge as an activity or recommendation for postpartum planning!

His broken grave marker reads: In testifying the Gospel of the Grace of God He finished his course with Joy on 7th of March 1812 Aged 55 years and Three Days. I had the great honor of attending my fifth birth and very first home birth. Momma chose to birth on our Indigenous homelands and it was beautiful! The grandmother energies that enveloped the space, the power of community who showed up, fire illuminating the way to an earth side welcoming, the resilience and strength of the mother... it left me in complete awe. It makes me so emotional to witness reclamation through community births 💫 this is why I call birth work my life’s work 💫 ensuring that my people have access to experience THIS! Like I stated some posts back, “birth will continue to return to the land and the people after this fierce one right here.” I witnessed the beauty of it all. And I’m ever grateful to be apart of the movement 🙏🏽❤️‍🔥🍓🌻

Sylvester Manor | Once a Native American hunting and fishing ground, Sylvester Manor has since 1652 been home to eleven generation of its original European settler family with a long intact history of America's evolving tastes, economies, multi-cultural interaction, and landscapes. Sylvester Manor is a house first constructed c. 1652 for Nathaniel and Grizzell Sylvester, their eleven children, and likely several slaves and indentured servants. This original house remained intact until c. 1737, until Nathaniel's grandson, Brinley Sylvester, rebuilt the residence close to the same location. Today, the house and acreage are known as the Sylvester Manor Educational Farm. Their mission is to cultivate, preserve, and share the lands, buildings, and stories inviting new thought about the importance of organic food, culture and place in our daily lives. Neetuonk | ‘a bringing forth’ | Shinnecock As birth workers our goal has always been to provide accessibility throughout the pregnancy to parenthood journey. We’ve dreamed of reconnecting to ancestral food ways as we offer birth and postpartum support services. We believe that food is medicine. Not only does food nourish us, it heals us. What better way to nourish your body and baby than fueling it with your ancestral knowledge and food ways? Many teachings around the globe share the importance of food and plant medicine during pregnancy and postpartum healing. In Winter 2022 we launched ‘Neetuonk Garden Project & Traditional Meal Train’. Neetuonk interprets as ‘a bringing forth’, a word used to describe birth [shinnecock]. Our hope is that this project inspires the reclamation and practice of traditional food ways, sovereignty and sustenance in regard to birthing bodies and our beings as a whole. Neetuonk Garden Project & Traditional Meal Train allows @heartberry.bw and @nohkuims.nation to expand birth and postpartum support services by offering birthing people and their families access to fresh produce, wild game, waterfowl, fish and shellfish. We also aim to prepare and deliver nourishing, premade meals rooted in ancestral knowledge, restaurant gift cards and community organized meal trains. *note: we have reserved this special service for the 13 tribes of long island, new york / we call upon Shinnecock gardeners, hunters, gatherers, foragers, fishermen and shellfishermen when needed This initiative is sponsored by good thoughts, intentions and so much #auntiedoula love 🫶🏽 táput ni for your support!
