Ray spoke about the Winthrop Library and its MERV filters, which help keep the air clean during the Methow Valley's smoky wildfire season. The library's passive heating and cooling capabilities are due to strategic massing and awnings, and allow the building to be a refuge during heat waves. Finally, its Firewise landscaped garden, and large open truss design, make the facility able to function as one large gathering space for the community during an emergency. The Bushfire Resilience Rating is now delivering insurance savings. @nrmainsurance and @suncorp today announced they will provide discounts to households using the free Bushfire Resilience Rating app, with certified ratings of 3 stars and above. The higher the bushfire risks at a location, the higher the discount provided to customers who improve their home’s resilience. Discounts for high Resilience Ratings from both insurers can be more than $500 in the highest risk areas. Historically, bushfires have long been a risk to Australian communities and also part of each summer season in communities nationwide. With the climate changing, the increasing threat of possible fires is shifting from mainly farming properties surrounded by bushland to also including houses that were previously deemed as lower-risk in residential areas. Recently published data shows that many regions around Australia will find their homes within a high-risk zone over the next few decades. Only a small percentage of homes in the tourist area of Byron Bay and Noosa, for example, are currently deemed high-risk, with the number jumping to more than one in three homes by 2090. Kate Cotter is the CEO of the not-for-profit Resilient Building Council. She has said that following the Black Summer fires, people were coming to them wanting to know how to prepare better if they ever found themselves in a similar unfortunate situation. “We’re hoping we can make a difference by helping people understand what makes their homes vulnerable and how they can change that,” she said.* “Because every home is different and every location is different.” With funding from the federal government, the Resilient Building Council (RBC) has now created the Bushfire Resilience Rating app, which assesses how vulnerable a specific house is to bushfire. To avoid widespread destruction experienced throughout the summer of 2019/20, the council also hopes the rating will influence how insurance companies reward case-to-case actions by possibly reducing premiums. Among the first people to trial and adopt the Bushfire Resilience Rating in Shoalhaven NSW, volunteer firefighters Ian and Annette Stevens spent every day of December 2019 fighting fires throughout their community - except the day they had to defend their own home. While they managed to save their home, they were concerned about the intensity of the bushfires and knew they wouldn't always be able to actively defend it. Ian and Annette used the Bushfire Resilience Rating app to identify the vulnerabilities in their home, take action and improve their #resilience. According to Finity Consulting, "by 2050, under high-emissions scenarios which are regularly used to assess physical risk, once lower-risk houses are projected to be exposed to increasing threat. A growing number would be classed as high-risk by today's standards." The Resilient Building Council team was thrilled to join Minister for Emergency Management, Murray Watt, Member for Gilmore Fiona Phillips MP and Insurance Council of Australia CEO Andrew Hall today at Parliament House to announce the launch of the free Bushfire Resilience Rating Home Self-Assessment app. After over a decade of expert collaboration, we’ve put complex science into a free app to help people assess the resilience of their own homes, providing households with a customised action plan, specific to their individual property and local risk. The theme for #WorldArchitectureDay is "Architecture for Resilient Cities"—emphasizing the role of infrastructure in curbing the issue of urban sprawl. Urban sprawl affects many cities throughout North America, negatively impacting civic amenities, health and wellness, and the environment. In Winnipeg, there is a need for high-density housing options in the downtown core to address the housing crisis and densify the heart of our city. Our project, 300 Assiniboine—the first high-rise apartment complex built in Downtown Winnipeg in over two decades—stands at 25 storeys with 234 units. It’s a highly densified building offering different housing options for residents, including rental suites and townhouses near Bonnycastle Park. It also has commercial space on the first floor. We feel 300 Assiniboine lends itself to keeping downtown a viable place to live, contributing to the resiliency and proliferation of sustainable infrastructure. With that note, what infrastructure do you think Winnipeg still needs to invest in to make it a more resilient city? With the uncertainty of climate change looming, there is a pressing need to transition to housing that is net-zero. Net-zero housing is resilient and adaptive to climate impacts like heat domes, flooding and wildfires - all which have been increasing in our region over recent years. Climate impacts disproportionately affect individuals and families who are most in need of affordable housing options. Our development goals include a net-zero emissions target, as well as providing the infrastructure for each building to be energy independent.
