Norfolk Southern 49R departs northbound from Camp Austin at Oakdale, TN, on the NS CNO&TP (Rathole) Second District on April 29th, 2024. According to American-rails.com, It used to be called the Rathole Division when it was the Southern Railway and is often remembered as a road with relatively flat and tangent main lines due to the region in which it operated. However, the system did feature its share of steep, circuitous main lines such as Saluda Grade in western North Carolina and its famed “Rathole Division” through Kentucky and Tennessee that reached as far north as Cincinnati. Technically, this stretch of the Southern main line was known as the 2nd District of subsidiary Cincinnati, New Orleans & Texas Pacific (CNO&TP), which was plagued for years by numerous tunnels resulting in its famous nickname by the crews which operated over it. Over the years the Southern worked to daylight or bypass these obstacles as the route saw significant freight tonnage, a task finally completed during the 1960s. Today, the Rathole remains an important artery in Norfolk Southern’s vast network. CSX M502 waits at Arklow in Madisonville, Ky with CSX Pere Marquette Heritage Unit, 1899, leading the way on the CSX Henderson Subdivision, on May 20th, 2024, as CSX M648 passes them heading north. According to a CSX Press Release: May 1, 2024 - CSX has introduced the latest addition in its heritage locomotive series, paying homage to the rich history of the Pere Marquette Railroad. This new unit showcases the Pere Marquette's legacy, dating back to its inception on November 1, 1899. The Pere Marquette Railroad, operating in the Great Lakes region of the United States and parts of southern Ontario, Canada, derived its name from Jacques Marquette, a notable French Jesuit missionary credited with founding Michigan's first European settlement in Sault Ste Marie. After years of operation, the company merged with the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway (C&O) on June 6, 1947, eventually becoming part of the renowned CSX network. The design of the Pere Marquette heritage locomotive was meticulously crafted by employees at the CSX Waycross Locomotive Shop. According to CSX Carman Painter Eric Lee, “We had to measure each stripe precisely and position the words just right to ensure it captured the look of the original design. It took us about four days just to lay out the stripes before we could begin painting.” Tech Info: DJI Mavic 3 Classic Drone, RAW, 22mm, f/2.8, 1/1600, ISO 140. #railroad #railroads #train, #trains #railway #railway #steamtrains #railtransport #railroadengines #picturesoftrains #picturesofrailways #besttrainphotograph #bestphoto #photographyoftrains #steamtrainphotography #CSXPereMarquetteheritageunit #bestsoldpicture #JimPearsonPhotography #csxheritagelocomotive

Thomas the Tank Engine prepares to meet Southern Railroad 630 at the siding just before the Chickamauga Creek Bridge at the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum at west Chattanooga, Tennessee, on April 27th, 2024. According to Wikipedia: Thomas the Tank Engine is an anthropomorphised fictional tank locomotive in the British Railway Series books by Wilbert Awdry and his son, Christopher, published from 1945. He became the most popular and famous character in the series, and is the titular protagonist in the accompanying television adaptation series Thomas & Friends and its reboot Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go. All of the vehicles in The Railway Series were based on prototypical engines; Thomas's basis is the LB&SCR E2 class. Thomas first appeared in 1946 in the second book in the series, Thomas the Tank Engine, and was the focus of the four short stories contained within. In The Railway Series and early episodes of Thomas & Friends, Thomas's best friends are Percy and Toby, though he is also close friends with Edward. Later episodes of Thomas & Friends have Thomas in a trio with James and Percy, and Percy is known as his best friend. In 1979, British writer and producer Britt Allcroft came across the books, and arranged a deal to bring the stories to life as the TV series Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends (later simplified to Thomas & Friends). The programme became an award-winning hit around the world, with a vast range of spin-off commercial products. Thomas now travels the world to delight children of all ages! Paducah and Louisville Railway (PAL) 4523, 4142, 2101 and 2104, lead an 8,100ft military train across the Tennessee River at Kentucky Dam at Gilbertsville, Kentucky, on May 17th, 2024. I couldn’t ask for a more beautiful day to capture a train here at this location. The crew took the train on to Paducah, Ky where it was tied down for the night. Where it went beyond there I’ve not heard, but in the past BNSF has picked up these moves and took them on west. It’s fairly rare to find a military train move on the Paducah and Louisville Railway (PAL) through my neck of the woods, but it does happen. I got word from a friend, Lee Taylor, up the line about an 8,100ft loaded military train that was headed southbound from Ft. Knox, Kentucky. I caught up with the train and chased it south to Kentucky Dam from West Yard in Madisonville, Kentucky where they had a crew change, on May 17th, 2024. As luck would have it, I found the PAL Salute to our Troops engine 2127 sitting in the yard at Princeton, Ky as the southbound military train passed it headed for Paducah, Ky. PAL 2127 was one end of an Operation Lifesaver Trainset that was there. Norfolk Southern 8023 brings up the rear as DPU on NS 167 as they make their way across the New River Bridge under stormy skies as they head southbound on the NS CNO&TP (Rathole) Second District at New River, Tennessee. On April 30th, 2024. DPU Stands for Distributed Power Unit, a locomotive set capable of remote-control operation in conjunction with locomotive unites at the train's head end. DPUs are placed in the middle or at the rear of heavy trains (such as coal, or grain) to help climb steep grades. According to the Historic Bridges website: This bridge is a very large high level deck cantilever truss bridge. It was constructed in 1963 and as such is a late example of its type, but still noteworthy as an uncommon structure type and for its size. Typical of 1960s truss bridges, the bridge still has riveted built-up beams, but v-lacing and lattice are absent in the built-up beams, and truss connections are bolted instead of riveted. CSXT 1869, Chesapeake & Ohio, heads north as the lead engine on X512 at Sebree, Kentucky on May 12th, 2024, on the CSX Henderson Subdivision. From a CSX Press Release: A locomotive commemorating the proud history of the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway has entered service as the fifth in the CSX heritage series celebrating the lines that came together to form the modern railroad. Numbered CSX 1869 in honor of the year the C&O was formed in Virginia from several smaller railroads, the newest heritage locomotive sports a custom paint design that includes today’s CSX colors on the front of the engine and transitions to a paint scheme inspired by 1960s era C&O locomotives on the rear two-thirds. The C&O Railway was a major line among North American freight and passenger railroads for nearly a century before becoming part of the Chessie System in 1972 and eventually merging into the modern CSX. In 1970, the C&O included more than 5,000 route miles of track stretching from Newport News, Virginia, to Chicago and the Great Lakes. CSXT 1852, Western Maryland Heritage Unit, heads north as the mid-train DPU on X512 as it passes over Gum Lick Trestle, just north of Kelly, Kentucky on May 12th, 2024, northbound on the CSX Henderson Subdivision. This extra 512 actually had two heritage units as the Chesapeake & Ohio unit 1869 was the lead engine on this same train and I’ll be posting a shot of that engine at Sebree, Ky this afternoon! DPU Stands for Distributed Power Unit, a locomotive set capable of remote-control operation in conjunction with locomotive unites at the train's head end. DPUs are placed in the middle or at the rear of heavy trains (such as coal, or grain) to help climb steep grades. From a CSX press release: April 9, 2024 - CSX has launched another addition to its locomotive fleet – the Western Maryland heritage locomotive. This new locomotive pays homage to the rich history of railroads in the Western Maryland region and symbolizes CSX's commitment to preserving and celebrating its railroad heritage. The Western Maryland Railroad operated between 1852 and 1983 in Maryland, West Virginia, and Pennsylvania. It was a small railroad that primarily transported coal and freight. “In 1983 the Western Maryland fully merged with the B&O (Baltimore and Ohio Railroad), which merged with the C&O (Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad) in 1987. They eventually merged with the Seaboard System to form CSX.” explained Tim Music, a CSX carman painter who assisted with the project. The CSX Western Maryland heritage locomotive features a striking design inspired by the iconic colors and markings of the historic Western Maryland Railway. With its bold red, black, and gold livery, this locomotive stands out as a tribute to the legacy of railroading in the region. A Loram Rail grinder makes its way through the Cajon Pass in Southern California in April of 1995. I spent a lot of years railfanning the pass between 1981 and 1995! It's a great place to catch trains and I've been back several times over the years since then. In fact I'm headed back again this coming September for a week or so to see how much it has changed since I was last there several years ago. In fact, it was before I had a drone, so I'm really looking forward to railfanning from the air this next trip! According to Wikipedia: Cajon Pass is a mountain pass between the San Bernardino Mountains to the east and the San Gabriel Mountains to the west in Southern California. Created by the movements of the San Andreas Fault, it has an elevation of 3,777 ft (1,151 m).[1] Located in the Mojave Desert, the pass is an important link from the Greater San Bernardino Area to the Victor Valley, and northeast to Las Vegas. The Cajon Pass area is on the Pacific Crest Trail. Cajon Pass is at the head of Horsethief Canyon, traversed by California State Route 138 and railroad tracks owned by BNSF Railway and Union Pacific Railroad. Improvements in 1972 reduced the railroad's maximum elevation from about 3,829 to 3,777 feet (1,167 to 1,151 m) while reducing curvature. Interstate 15 does not traverse Cajon Pass, but rather the nearby Cajon Summit. The entire area, Cajon Pass and Cajon Summit, is often referred to as Cajon Pass, but a distinction is made between Cajon Pass and Cajon Summit. A Loram Badger Ditcher Machine, DC-2, heads north out of the siding at Crofton, Kentucky as W055-13, on April 12th, 2024, on the CSX Henderson Subdivision. According to their website: Loram’s Badger Ditcher is a self-propelled ditch cleaner that can move 1,000 tons of material every hour, excavating at up to 22 feet from the center of the track. The Loram ditch cleaner creates a properly sloped ditch that intercepts and diverts water away from the track. The ditcher’s high-speed, high-performance ditching wheel digs in and picks up mud and water. As the wheel digs the ditch, water begins to flow. The Badger Ditcher helps manage, remedy, and prevent the damaging effects from a host of penetrating water sources, including direct precipitation, groundwater migration, springs and trapped water, saturation, and seepage. Ditch maintenance best practices using the Badger Ditcher lets railroads improve vital drainage for the subgrade, lower the water table, control run-off, and promote free flow from the ballast section that can extend the effective duration of undercutting and ballast cleaning cycles. April 24, 2024, As many of you know I've been working on a landscapes photo challenge I've titled 7-Minutes till Sunset, but I fudged on this one again and it was shot at 17 minutes till Sunset, as it was when the train was in the right spot for me. During this challenge have been photographing a landscape daily from the air at 7 minutes till sunset, but today I caught a loaded Paducah and Louisville Railway coal train crossing the wetlands after picking up a load of coal at Warrior Coal mine, just outside Madisonville, Ky, on April 24th, 2024. April 21, 2024, As many of you know I've been working on a landscapes photo challenge I've titled 7-Minutes till Sunset, but I fudged on this one and it was shot at 10 minutes till Sunset. - During this challenge have been photographing a landscape daily from the air at 7 minutes till sunset, but today I was planning on shooting Gum Lick Trestle, just north of Kelly, Ky on the CSX Henderson Subdivision on April 21st, 2024. However, I was blessed with two trains here at sunset today and this is the one closest to my 7 minute mark, which was shot about 3 minutes early, as loaded grain train CSX G413 heads south across it. I really didn't expect a train at this spot at sunset, let along two about 15 minutes apart! The first train was a northbound empty coal train which I'll post later in the week as it was about 30 minutes before sunset. I threw up a prayer on my way to Gum Lick from my home in Richland letting the good Lord know it'd be nice if I had a train on the trestle at Sunset, I think he provided nicely even though I didn't expect an answer so breathtakingly, as this line sees very few trains at this time of the day through here! You just never know. Exposure was for the sun and then I brought up the mid-tones and shadows in the RAW file processing. Santa Fe 4035 passes through tunnel 9 under their train above in the Tehachapi Loop as they begin to pull through the loop on their way west on the UP Mojave Subdivision in April of 1995. According to Wikipedia: The Tehachapi Loop is a 3,779-foot-long (0.72 mi; 1.15 km) spiral, or helix, on the Union Pacific Railroad Mojave Subdivision through Tehachapi Pass, of the Tehachapi Mountains in Kern County, south-central California. The line connects Bakersfield and the San Joaquin Valley to Mojave in the Mojave Desert. Rising at a steady two-percent grade, the track gains 77 feet (23 m) in elevation and makes a 1,210-foot-diameter (370 m) circle. Any train that is more than 3,800 feet (1,200 m) long—about 56 boxcars—passes over itself going around the loop. At the bottom of the loop, the track passes through Tunnel 9, the ninth tunnel built as the railroad was extended from Bakersfield, CA. The line averages about 36 freight trains each day. Passenger trains such as Amtrak's San Joaquin are banned from the loop, although the Coast Starlight can use it as a detour. Its frequent trains and scenic setting make the Tehachapi Loop popular with railfans. In 1998, it was named a National Historic Civil Engineering Landmark. It is also designated as California Historical Landmark #508. Eastbound and Westbound stack trains meet at the signal bridge at MP 336.3 on the Union Pacific’s Mojave Subdivision at Mojave, California in the mid-1990s. According to Wikipedia, the Mojave Subdivision refers to a series of railway lines in California. The primary route crosses the Tehachapi Pass and features the Tehachapi Loop, connecting Bakersfield to the Mojave Desert. East of Mojave, the line splits with the Union Pacific Railroad portion continuing south to Palmdale and Colton over the Cajon Pass and the BNSF Railway owned segment running east to Barstow. Both companies generally share trackage rights across the lines. The route over the Tehachapi Pass was constructed by the Southern Pacific Railroad as their main line south to the Colorado River. As part of their charter, the company was steadily building south in the San Joaquin Valley after having abandoned plans to do so via the coastal route. Built simultaneously to the Fresno Subdivision, the rail head reached Goshen in August 1872, Delano on July 14, 1873, Caliente on April 26, 1875, and Mojave on August 9, 1876. The completion of the line through the Soledad Canyon in 1876 provided the first link between Los Angeles and San Francisco via rail. The Victorville Cutoff was opened in 1967, and the Union Pacific's track over the Cajon Pass was built by the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad. The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway had purchased the San Francisco and San Joaquin Valley Railroad in 1898, but the valley was isolated from their mainline which ran from Needles to Los Angeles and San Diego. After the Valley Division was opened in 1900, they negotiated with Southern Pacific for the right to run trains over the Tehachapi. This trackage rights arrangement persists to the era of the railroads' successors: Union Pacific and BNSF. CSX B211, a loaded potash train, heads north from Crofton, Kentucky, with CSX Heritage Unit L&N 1972 Family Lines System trailing CSXT 62 northbound, on March 28th, 2024, on the Henderson Subdivision. This chase was the first time I’ve photographed this unit and though I wish it was leading, I’ll take it anyway it comes! According to CSXT: Our fleet of heritage locomotives is growing again as we unveil CSX Locomotive 1972, a tribute to the Family Lines System! The #ONECSX team in Waycross, GA recreated this unit to celebrate the special time from 1972-1982 when the Seaboard Coast Line, Clinchfield and L&N railroads were marketed as one. Eventually merging to become the Seaboard System Railroad, and ultimately the CSX we know today, the Family Lines System represents an integral part of our railroad’s rich history. The CSX heritage series is reinforcing employee pride in the history of the railroad that continues to move the nation’s economy with safe, reliable, and sustainable rail-based transportation services. CSX M500 heads north at Mortons Gap, Kentucky, with CSX Heritage Unit, L&N 1850, on March 24th, 2024, on the Henderson Subdivision. According to CSXT: CSX has introduced the sixth locomotive in its heritage series, a freshly painted unit honoring the Louisville & Nashville Railroad. Designated CSX 1850, the locomotive will be placed into service, carrying the L&N colors across the 20,000-mile CSX network. The paint scheme was designed and applied at the CSX Locomotive Shop in Waycross, Georgia, which has produced all six units in the heritage series celebrating the lines that came together to form the modern CSX. Like the other heritage locomotives, the L&N unit combines the heritage railroad’s iconic logo and colors on the rear two-thirds of the engine with today’s CSX colors and markings on the cab end. Chartered by the State of Kentucky in 1850, the L&N grew into a vital transportation link between the Gulf Coast and the nation’s heartland. The railroad was absorbed by the Seaboard Coastline Railroad, which subsequently became part of the Chessie System and, ultimately, today’s CSX. The CSX heritage series is reinforcing employee pride in the history of the railroad that continues to move the nation’s economy with safe, reliable and sustainable rail-based transportation services. On October 17th, 2023, the crew on Denver and Rio Grande Wester 473 rounds the curve at Colorado Trail, with a freight train during a recent photo charter, between Durango and Silverton, CO, on the Durango and Silverton Railroad. According to their website: Locomotive 473: The 473 was one of ten K-28 locomotives built by the American Locomotive Works in Schenectady, New York in 1923 for the narrow-gauge D&RGW. All ten engines which were called the Sport Models, were sold to the Rio Grande Railroad. The 473 worked the narrow-gauge rails in Colorado and New Mexico with her sisters 470 through 479. The 473 spent a lot of time on the Silverton line, also working Durango to Alamosa and the Chili line, which ran from Antonito, Colorado to Santa Fe, New Mexico. The 473’s life changed forever in 1941 when the United States was attacked at Pearl Harbor. The U.S. feared a Japanese invasion through Alaska, across the Bering Strait. The U.S. wanted to build a narrow-gauge railroad in Alaska to move troops and supplies into that remote area to defend Canada and the U.S. Seven of her nine K-28s sisters were taken to Alaska, along with other narrow gauge rolling stock and locomotives, including 470, 471, 472, 474, 475, 477, and 479. After World War II, these seven Rio Grande locomotives were brought back to Seattle, Washington where they met the scrapping torch. The 473 was delivered from the American Locomotive Company in August 1923 with a medium green boiler jacket, cylinder covers and headlight. She had silver striping and 12” lettering (currently 16” lettering). The cab, dome, frame, and plumbing were black, as was the tender. BNSF 976 leads a intermodal across the bridge at Diablo Canyon, Arizona as they head east on the BNSF Seligman Subdivision, through the Navajo Reservation in north central Arizona. From what I recall this slide was shot in the mid-1990s. According to Wikipedia: Canyon Diablo is a ghost town in Coconino County, Arizona, United States on the edge of the arroyo Canyon Diablo. The community was settled in 1880 and died out in the early 20th century. The ramshackle camp of railroad workers originated in 1880, due to the construction of the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad bridge over a large canyon named Canyon Diablo. The temporary community assumed the name of the canyon that stood in the way of the railroad construction - Canyon Diablo. The bridge construction took six months, during which many regular railroad construction workers were encamped and waiting to recommence their work once the canyon had been spanned. After the bridge was completed, construction resumed and the camp was largely abandoned. When the railroad bridge was completed, the town quickly died. The original railroad bridge was replaced in 1900 with a new bridge to carry heavier locomotives and cars. By 1903, the only thing remaining in the town was a Navajo trading post. A new double track railroad bridge was completed across the Canyon in 1947. What remains today at Canyon Diablo are a few building foundations, the grave marker and grave of Herman Wolfe, the ruins of the trading post, a railroad siding and a double track railroad bridge.
