KANGAROO CARE AWARENESS DAY! Touching and holding is such an important part of caring for your baby in the NICU. One way to hold your baby is called kangaroo care. This is when you hold your baby skin-to-skin on your chest. Kangaroo care is good for your baby. It helps keep the baby warm, is good for their heart, breathing and helps them sleep better. Day 7: First Day of Placement Born: April 23, 2020 Placed into foster care: July 2020 Placed for respite in our home: April 7, 2021 2nd placement for permanency: April 19, 2021 Adoption day: April 12, 2022 The girls’ journey through foster care began even before the first day they arrived at our home, which was actually their second placement just a few weeks before their first birthday. Their initial placement was with a family that has now become like family to us, after spending 3 months in the NICU before coming to us. The girls were eventually adopted just a few weeks before their second birthday. The impact of their time in foster care on their ability to form secure attachments is something that weighs heavily on my heart. I know that repairing this attachment will be a lifelong journey. During our first visit with the girls at 9 months old, they were hesitant to accept hugs, a sign of the challenges they had faced. Born at 27 weeks with PDA heart defects that required surgery, spending their early months in an incubator, and then being moved from one home to another in their first year of life, the trauma they endured is heartbreaking. We have been keeping a secret Meet Elidee & Atillya After a very stressful and complicated pregnancy the doctors decided it was time for the twins to come out at 34wks due to a decline in growth. I thought once they were out I would be able to sigh a sigh of relief but the last few weeks have been some of my hardest. Watching your babies being sent off in ambulances to a higher level hospital, having tubes and wires all over them, alarms beeping all the time. Seeing Elidee on a ventilator as it breathed for her at one point because her little body was exhausted, their little bodies covered in bruises from the constant needles and tubes. Watching them lay your baby out with a blue sheet covering their tiny body whilst they insert a long line, feeling so helpless. Not being able to pick your babies up and comfort them when they cry. Just being able to look at them through the sides of the incubator and not being able to just do what felt natural and be their mum. The immense mum guilt I felt for living in hospitals for weeks and not being there for Amira are all things I will never forget the feeling of. It’s been such an emotional rollercoaster and even just writing this brings tears to my eyes but they both did it and grew so strong in the last few weeks ❤️ I’m so grateful for the Neonatal team at Kettering and the Nicu team at Peterborough for looking after our babies, getting them strong enough to come home and for helping us through this journey. it’s now been a week since we have been home and I’m so proud of them and how far they have come. It feels amazing to be able to just be a family and just to do all the normal every day things. It is currently World Autism Acceptance Week and the National Autistic Society report that there are over 150,000 people in the UK waiting for an autism assessment. This is a staggering number and I am sure many members of this community either know someone who has been in this waiting list or have experienced it first hand. I know for some parents there is a worry about whether having a diagnosis is beneficial to them or whether it may pigeon hole them, and this applies to more than just a diagnosis of autism. Any diagnoses that your child has can lead to a mixture of feelings for you as parents. On the one hand a diagnosis may lead to a plan for medication, a better idea of what can be done to support your child and ultimately a better life experience for them too. However it is also common to worry about the implications of 'labelling them' and the way people may treat them differently due to misconceptions about their diagnosis, which is exactly what acceptance and awareness days try to address. He now weights 7lb 10oz 🤯! Smiling & chatting to elephant !Hes got his first cardiac appointment and been referred to haematology for his neutrophil levels! My boys a warrior tho and it will all be sound as a pound ! Hes the chilled out one. James is a massive 9lb 14oz ! Katrina from @kat_plus_girls shares her NICU story Sienna Rose was born on 27th August 2019 at 26+3 weighing just 2lbs 1oz. At 3 weeks old, Sienna became very poorly with a distended stomach amd constipation. Sienna was having ultrasounds and x-rays almost every other day to try to find out the cause but nothing would show. Nurses and drs couldn't find out what was wrong with her. At 6 weeks, one of the surgeons told me that unless they operate, Sienna is unlikely to make it. She was taken for emergency surgery the next day (October 12th). The surgeon found a hernia in her small intestine and found she had NEC. Sienna had 20cm bowels removed and a stoma put in. After a few weeks we had some complications with the stoma. It kept leaking which caused Sienna to get sore. This meant the bag was changed a lot more than it should have been. Two months later we had the stoma reversed. This should have been done christmas eve but was brought forward. (December 12th). Sienna was discharged just after Christmas! (December 27th). We did have other complications whilst in NICU, however that one was our biggest one Tip: talk to people, other parents, nurses, therapist. I did all that and made friends for life. And it was a great support network. Sienna is doing really well now. She will be 5 in August. You may have just had an emergency c section or hours long labour and your heart is suddenly ripped out and placed in a different room to you. And whilst you are trying to process what is happening to you and you baby and your world is crashing down around you a nurse comes and asks you about expressing. . . 🌟 FEATURE FRIDAY 🌟 Thank you @scottybrannigan1990 for sharing your story. I’m Anna (mummy) Bobby (child) Length of time in NICU: 16 days 💪🏽 initially they thought if he survived it would be months. Name of NICU: Royal Jubilee NICU & Ulster Hospital NICU. What were some of the complications you faced during your stay: the shock of such a normal delivery being turned upside down, having to leave hospital with out our baby, Bobby surviving and getting better but scared to take him home from the safety of NICU & the angel midwives and doctors that cared for him around the clock & saved his life. Summary of your stay: Bobby rushed to NICU shortly after skin to skin, christened being hours old and told to prepare for the worst. He was stabilised and responded to treatment. He was described as sickness child on the island that day they believed he would be in for months, he made progress hour by hour day by day. We were then reminded that he could still be affected in other ways and may developmentally have challenges, hearing or site issues. One tip for new NICU parents: be gentle with yourself, accept help & support, talk about your experience all the feelings are so valid and other NICU parents will relate. How they are doing now: We will never have the words for how grateful & lucky we are to have him with us fit & healthy. He hit his milestones from he left hospital on wards. Bobby is in Primary 1 now & amazes us daily. 💖𝓣𝓾𝓮𝓼𝓭𝓪𝔂💖 Today, this gorgeous girl was finally discharged from paediatrics!! 💖💖 Due to being born prematurely, their paediatric care began when their SCBU/NICU care ended. 💖💖 Leah was discharged a couple of years ago, but as Erin was still awaiting treatment from ENT she was still being seen. 💖 She had her Adenotonsillectomy last year, and as she now has her hearing aids and is under audiology, she can now be discharged from Paediatrics. 💖 They have both had the most fantastic care over the past eight years, and we are so thankful to everyone who has been involved in their care. Everyone has been amazing!! 💖💖 I saw someone the other day who I haven’t seen since the twins were small and I didn’t recognise them at first. The first year of the twins life is a blur. I was a wreck to be honest. I look back and realise that we were just about surviving. 🥺 I feel like there is so much that I don’t remember, and I feel an awful lot of guilt for that. 🥺 It was a blur of hospital appointments and trying to keep them safe, and also trying to keep life as normal as possible for the rest of the children. 🥺🥰💖💙 I feel like it’s a part of our lives that is really hard to look back on, and there is a lot of emotions and trauma that have never been dealt with. 🥺 Most importantly now though, eight years on, is that the twins are none the wiser for all that they went through. 💖💖 They are strong, clever, funny, unique, independent girls who make us proud everyday. 💖💖 . . #thesullivanfamily #largefamilylife #12children #familyof14 #preemietwins #prematuretwins #identicaltwins #mirrortwins #twinsisters
