Dexter Romweber 1966-2024 An overdue remembrance. Dex Romweber was a highly underrated American talent. He was a true disciple of the early Rock N Roll era, a Southern eccentric and a deeply musical soul. He was only a few years my senior. I was lucky enough to have crossed paths with him on a few occasions. When my musical tastes and pursuits were shifting from purely Hardcore Punk to more indie and retro-garagey type stuff, Dex was already well established in the South (based out of Chapel Hill/Carboro, NC) with his group (most often a duo sometimes a trio) Flat Duo Jets. I saw Flat Duo Jets open for Reverend Horton Heat at First Avenue in Minneapolis circa 1993. I was greatly struck by the sharp contrast. Though they were both in the retro "Rockabilly" camp, their approaches were very different. The Reverend Horton Heat very much followed the stylistic (image-wise) playbook, (think Stray Cats) Ducktail pompadour hairdos, Gretsch guitar, vintage Fender amps, upright bass, 50s looking clothes, chain wallet, tattoos, flames, dice etc. Their act was tight and slick. They were good fun but somewhat formulaic...The 'Duo Jets, looked like they just rolled out of bed, just the pair of them (Dex and drummer, Crow). They were messy looking and playing. Dex had his beat up Sears Silvertone guitar and an 80s Randall amp, his T-Shirt was stretched out like he'd been wearing it for days, but the level of passion and conviction of their performance was unforgettable. Though they were in some ways sloppier and more noisy, they were waaaay more musical and tuneful. This always stuck with me. Dex would have told you this himself, genre and style didn't mean much to him. Melody, emotion, energy and freedom were his medium. He was the kind of Artist I cherish. Gone far too soon. Wayne Kramer 1948-2024 One more remembrance this week. Wayne Kramer was a founding member (guitarist) of the Detroit band Motor City Five Best known as MC5, they were a seminal influence on what would be eventually known as the Punk movement. This was not only due to their high energy, high volume, performances but also to their association with radical left wing politics. MC5's music and philosophy was about FREEDOM for all on all fronts writ large. Wayne Kramer embodied this ethos, at times to his own detriment, over indulging in substances and getting in trouble with the law, even serving a prison sentence. Through it all he remained steadfast in his musical pursuits and efforts to uplift the people. Aston "Family Man" Barret 1946-2024 Another great loss. One of the foundational players in the history of Reggae Music as we know it today...Also one of my personal bass player idols... Aston Barret dubbed "Family Man" for his many (52) children by many women, played bass. He was a member of Jamaican studio session groups, The Hippy Boys and The Upsetters before becoming the full-time bass player for Bob Marley & The Wailers. His bass lines epitomize the melodic and rhythmic sensibilities that would define Reggae Music. One could say he played "lead bass" because of his intricate play with melody and harmony. This was balanced by a deep respect for space. Together with his brother, Carlton on drums, they demonstrated that deepest grooves not only move, but also drop out and give space. 'Fams' influence on all popular music is immeasurable. The Upsetters and then The Wailers were like Motown's "Funk Brothers" for Jamaican music. They set the gold standard for what a rhythm section could be. Tom Smothers 1937-2023 Unfortunately, another remembrance to end 2023. Tommy Smothers and his younger brother Dick, were a comedic folk duo that came out of the collegiate folk music craze of the late 1950s and early 1960s. Their clean-cut presentation combined with irreverent and off-the-wall comedy brought their novel act to the American Television screen eventually with the groundbreaking, "Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour". In the late 1960s Tom Smothers fought fiercely against CBS censors to include progressive, inclusive and cutting edge ideas in their material. He was one of TVs greatest advocates for new and what was then considered, "offensive" comedy that addressed real contemporary social and political issues. He was also a classic example of the "dumb" or "goofy"one in the act being the real brains of the operation. If you are unfamiliar with his career, it is worth examination...
