WE NEED YOUR HELP! 💸 Arthur (fka Igor) who was adopted a couple weeks ago started feeling crummy with GI troubles in his adoptive home so his new ma rushed him to the emergency vet. An ultrasound found inflammation consistent with Irritable Bowel Disease but nothing else obvious. Arthur spent the weekend hospitalized so we could make sure he was moving in the right direction and eating again. We’re hoping the stress of the transition caused a flare up and he’ll be feeling better with the help of meds. He’s back home now and taking it easy. Surprise emergency vet bills always seem to come at the worst time. Arthur’s hospitalization cost over $3,000 and we’re still currently on an intake hold while we replenish our vet care fund. Because of his love of reading and writing, and his natural curiosity, Brownie kept a notebook of his scientific interests! The first page we discussed was entitled, "FIP is Treatable." 💙 FIP is a deadly disease that was considered a death sentence up until about 5 years ago. FIP frequently strikes young kittens and occasionally adult cats. The drug to treat FIP, known as GS, has not been approved for use in cats in the US. The patent is owned by big pharma, the pharmaceutical company Gilead. Gilead has refused to present it to the FDA for approval. * Desperate pet parents have been forced to seek out helpful organizations who provide the drug to them from overseas sources. 🙏 Guess what? It works!! It has saved the lives of thousands of kitties over the years. Veterinarians can guide its use, but cannot prescribe it or give it legally. Well, that is about to change! 🎉 As of June 1st, compounded GS will be made and sold in the US. The national compounding pharmacy, Stokes, has contracted with a European compounding pharmacy to acquire the rights to produce it here. Most veterinarians know Stokes Pharmacy. I have used it for years. ➡️ On May 10, the FDA announced it will allow the sale of the compounded medication when prescribed by veterinarians for specific cat patients. 😭😭😭 TEARS OF JOY! If you are unlucky enough to have a kitty with FIP, or know someone who has, you must act quickly. We don't yet know how much the product made in the US will cost.
