Paço Espiscopal, Porto, Portugal, Europe 2024 We visited the Paço Espiscopal here in Porto. It was raining heavily, just like England. There was lots to see inside the palace, but I noticed the views from the windows. I was hoping that my little Sony would look beyond the rain drops, but it was only interested in the rain drops outside on the glass. In the 4th photograph I was hoping that the bright yellow raincoat that someone was wearing would stand out in the greyness, but it's a small dot of Indian yellow in the middle of the picture. I'm listening to David Whyte's 'The House of Belonging' I awoke this morning in the gold light turning this way and that thinking for a moment it was one day like any other. But the veil had gone from my darkened heart and I thought it must have been the quiet candlelight that filled my room, it must have been the first easy rhythm with which I breathed myself to sleep, it must have been the prayer I said speaking to the otherness of the night. And I thought this is the good day you could meet your love, this is the gray day someone close to you could die. This is the day you realize how easily the thread is broken between this world and the next and I found myself sitting up in the quiet pathway of light, the tawny close grained cedar burning round me like fire and all the angels of this housely heaven ascending through the first roof of light the sun has made. This is the bright home in which I live, this is where I ask my friends to come, this is where I want to love all the things it has taken me so long to learn to love. This is the temple of my adult aloneness and I belong to that aloneness as I belong to my life. Barmston Beach, East Riding of Yorkshire, England, UK, Europe 2024 . I really like Barmston Beach. Barmston Village itself is small. A small Norman church whose congregation is in single figures. Over hundreds of years the land has been falling into the sea, including the road through the village which stops abruptly at the cliff edge. There's a large caravan park and beautiful farmland dotted with second world war pill boxes. The beach is usually empty, apart from a few dogwalkers. York Gate Garden 2024 Ink on paper 29.7 x 21 cm / 11.75 x 8.25 in . I made some photographs at @york_gate_garden in 2021. I think it was my first visit. The photograph I made this drawing from has been stuck in my mind since then. Whilst I've been working on a new big canvas, using a lot of Prussian blue and green, this image had been circling my thoughts. I decided to make a drawing and then possibly a big canvas. I like how the four evergreens or cones or disappearing tracks sit on top of the green and pink foliage of the foreground. Kadip Gallery will present Hopkins' 'Sea Pictures' a series of five paintings and other works. Hopkins writes about the Sea Pictures: "In June a friend introduced me to an Edward Elgar piece, 'Sospiri', a really beautiful piece for cello (I fantasise about being able to play a musical instrument, especially the cello. I watch Rostropovich very closely). Listening to this reminded me of his 'Sea Pictures' song cycle; I first heard a young mezzo-soprano singing one of the songs in a local church some years ago. On new year's day in 2021 Susie and I made a trip to Flambouorgh Head; it's been a tradition of ours to mark the new year by visiting the sea. Touching the water at the edge of the land is an important thing for me to do, it makes a mark. Everyone likes to be the first to spot the sea when traveling to the coast. On that particular day I made a number of photographs at the two Landings. On my return after editing the sea photographs, Elgar's Sea Pictures came to mind, so I selected five of the photographs and made five small drawings. After hearing 'Sospiri' (from the Italian "sighing") I found my 'Sea Pictures' and decided to make five much larger works. What is interesting is looking at each painting in relation to the title, they perhaps take you beyond what's there in the paint. My titles are usually matter-of-fact, confirming what's in the picture. Painting the series has taken me on a bit of a tangent and I'll be glad to get back to my Walking Aheads.
