Spotting Steptoe Butte from a distance reminded me of Devil’s Tower. It’s the only thing standing out in miles of low rolling Palouse wheat fields at 3,612’. Originally called Power Mountain by native folks it has some of the oldest rock in the region and it lives up to its name upon approach. The mostly single lane pot holed road and blind corners with vertical sides required a power bar to stay focused. #palouse #steptoebutte

I prefer using my @festool_usa Planex to grind down painted popcorn to most efficiently prep my ceilings for a skim before being retextured. Veneer Plaster Here is a wonderful example of an application where a veneer plaster really shines - please pardon the photo quality, this was one of my first big projects to get a chance at applying some plaster. At this time I was working for a general contractor in Iowa. We were helping convert the three season porch to a schoolroom in a 1920s craftsman mansion. The question was asked if laminating drywall would be a suitable solution when covering the windows that were to be framed in, along with covering the existing dashed stucco that covered the interior of the space and exterior of the home. Drywall could work but would not present the best long term solution in my opinion - plaster to the rescue! We were able to laminate drywall where necessary but the plan was to rely on a two coat veneer of plaster to bring the walls to a smooth level 5 finish. We applied a bonding agent to the wall, applied USG structolite as our base plaster with an embedded mesh for strength, and finally used a smooth veneer plaster as our finish coat plaster. Solving problems with mud is always a solution I am happy to explore. Through this use of a veneer plaster, we were able to achieve a superior wall system. In the future, there will be no threat of nail pops, no flashing seams, and no worries about the quality of the lamination of a sheet good, such as drywall. Veneer Plaster Often times we are asked: “where does plaster fit into today’s building applications” or “where could I use plaster in my home?” Allow me to introduce you one timeless option, veneer plaster! From left to right, this sample shows the process of application of veneer plaster to regular drywall. A grey base coat plaster is applied over a bonding agent (pink plaster bonder) and finally finished with a smooth white finish plaster. Veneer plaster is comparable to a smooth level 5 drywall finish, but with a much higher performance value. Veneer plaster is a tough, durable finish and stands up well to high traffic and daily use. Veneer plaster is a paint grade finish, making it a premium finishing option with a comparable cost to regular drywall finishing but with much more benefit to you. The month of April often draws thunderstorms and sudden squalls to western Washington, drenching the landscape and drawing away in a very short time. The primary driver is the rise temperatures in the western Washington as the days become longer. Regardless of the reason, the onset of this weather pattern paints the skies with dramatic clouds and lighting that lend themselves well to photography. Out in the Palouse region, I caught the tail end of a spring thunderstorm.
