Former research dogs need time to adjust and decompress, they suffer from varying degrees of PTSD and anxiety. When someone tells you humans need to test on animals to cure disease. When someone asks you what else we could do. The response to diseases, drugs, and treatments is different in animals and humans and so animal testing presents with serious limitations. Non-animal methods are now more efficient and effective, as well as less expensive! The cost of using animals does not outweigh the "alternatives". The animals suffer as do the animal care workers. The trauma is real and can take months and years to heal and even then they can be haunted - by movement, by sound, by touch and by sound. The emotional effects include PTSD, anxiety and depression. These effects change some of the natural behaviours of a canine and include a fight, flight, or freeze response, resource guarding, shyness. Linus UPDATE! ADOPTED! His family is so in love with him and his beagle brother is coming around too. He is right around the corner from his foster family, so he is surrounded with love and support. Linus and Schroeder were two of the four of our Peanuts Rescue. They were both released from animal testing and are thriving! The other two, Charlie and Lucy, are at the lab indefinitely. We are hoping that with updates on how well these boys are doing, minds will be changed. Though we do not know what facility Charlie and Lucy are at, we do know that they are not forgotten. Even though rescue can be bittersweet some days, it is so important to take a moment to be grateful for those who are free. It is with deep sadness that we let you know that Charlie and Lucy have been detained by the lab indefinitely. We have little information as we were not privy to the facility holding them. We, along with our rescue partners, were simply told that they would not be releasing them as promised at the end of March. We share this, because we want to tell you the truth of course, but also because it is vital that everyone know what kind of tightrope we walk on. We are literally at times, at the mercy of the laboratories who hold and use these dogs. We also want you to know that as we take a moment to grieve, to cry, to honour them and pray for them, we also strengthen our resolve to save them. "We have not given up on Lucy and Charlie, and as devastatingly sad and angering as this moment is, it proves how important this mission is. Animal use in science is not just an animal welfare issue. For the most past, the animal use model does not translate into cures and treatments for humans. Animals are harmed. The animal care workers are harmed and the outcomes are not curing diseases in the way we have believed them to be. BORIS UPDATE! We know you've been patiently waiting for an update on Boris and cannot thank everyone enough for all of the well wishes and generous donations. It's meant and means the world to us! Our sweet boy spent the beginning of his life in a lab and was then left in a kill shelter - but is now being doted on by the incredible veterinary team at University Veterinary Center in Anaheim, CA @uvcvet. � Boris underwent surgery and is now recovering beautifully - thanks to YOU! Boris had a mass removed from his mouth along with a dental procedure. A mass was removed from his leg, it was wrapped around the entire leg so was a much bigger surgery than expected. This was what was causing his lameness. Several more larger masses were removed and he had a draining tube and was on intravenous antibiotics. He is recovering well - and now we are awaiting biopsy results in order to take next steps! Boris is surprisingly in good spirits, he is such a good boy. Honestly if we didn't have his paperwork, we would never suspect him to be 14 years of age. He is a SURVIVOR! We will continue to share updates with you, in the meantime, we are still hoping to find a foster for Boris in the Southern California area - our plan is to keep him close to his medical team and our rescue partner @Cagetocouchrescue.
