Opened in 1962, Lil’ Pickle (@lilpickleusa) is Orange County’s oldest sandwich shop and claims to be “the best sandwich spot in Costa Mesa.” I’m here to tell you that they are not. The sandwich had a fine flavor, but was so thin, I thought it was on Ozempic. I could count the slices of meat on one hand. Their menu has a variety of freshly made deli-style sandwiches, so I’m sure there is something for everyone, but you’d have to get double meat for the sandwich to be remotely satisfying. It’s all bread and no substance, with a price point well above what you’d expect for a couple of slices of deli meat. I went because OC Feed (@ocfeed) recommended it, and clearly, they’re a local favorite since they’ve been in business for over 60 years, but I definitely won’t be going back, nor will the four friends I went with. It’s a bummer because the hype around this place made it seem like a great spot for a quick bite. On the bright side, a portion of every dollar spent is returned to the community to help support youth and young adult activities, so I guess that’s a good thing. As many of you know, I’m always looking for good chicken, and this time I set my eyes on The Crack Shack, a casual dining spot known for its elevated fried chicken dishes and playful atmosphere. Founded in 2015, with its first location in San Diego, The Crack Shack quickly gained popularity for its inventive takes on classic chicken dishes, using high-quality ingredients and creative flavor combinations. The Crack Shack has since expanded to multiple locations across California and Las Vegas, offering a range of chicken-focused menu items, including sandwiches, salads, and sides, all served in a relaxed, urban-inspired setting. I ordered their Firebird Sandwich - spicy fried Jidori thigh, cool ranch, crispy onions, pickles, potato roll - and their house salad. The sandwich was MASSIVE and easily shareable. I went for a walk on the beach with my wildlife lens to search for shorebirds at sunset until, thanks to the super low tide, I got COMPLETELY distracted by the rippling texture of the sand and the surprise color on the horizon!
