After all of their rigorous lessons, projects and exams, it is time to send another group of budding Rover enthusiasts out into the galaxy. The graduation ceremony was quite an event. Not only were the rumors true about a performance by Pop legend Saelor Twyft, but she was even joined in a surprise duet by Benny Stardust. One of the guest speakers that we were most excited to meet was the famous custom rover-builder Theodore Q. Spacepants. Mr. Spacepants told us that there are many career possibilities for someone who enjoys working with rovers. (And he has tried most of them) Many of them are serious, valuable and rewarding possibilities. But he also told us that sometimes a rover exists simply to be enjoyed, like the one he brought to show us. He had just finished this sleek two-seat three-wheeler cruiser. He explained to us that we mustn't lose the sheer joy of roving, and that is a lesson that will always stay with me. Groundskeeper Rover Febrovery 2024 no.25 Rover School is in session... You may have noticed the large variety of space plants that grow all around the grounds of the Rover School campus. This is due to the diligent work of our Astrohorticulture teacher and school groundskeeper Professor Benny G. When he is not delivering verbose lectures on the germination and care of the innumerable species of galactic flora, you can often see him trundling about the school gardens in his Groundskeeper Rover. The machine boasts large cisterns for holding both precious H2O and nutritious organic fertilizer, and space for storing his various plant-care implements. To illustrate the topic, our professor invited a pair of Robot Warriors from the Intergalactic Defense Council to demonstrate one of their rovers. They brought along the latest terrestrial defense rover, a so-called TD-6L. Armed with twin Protonic Fusion Laser cannons and a capable 6 wheel drive chassis, it was really quite an imposing machine. It is widely known that the main export of Post-Water Crisis Mars is Life-Size Delicious Gummy AliensTM. But today we learned that this led to an interesting episode. In the early twenty-first century, mining colonists from Earth arrived on the surface of Mars to search for energy crystals. When the mining colonists encountered the Life-Size Delicous Gummy AliensTM, they mistook them for hostile alien aggressors. Shooting first and asking questions later (as Earthlings often do), the colonists nearly destroyed a whole seasons's worth of inventory before the real Martians could intervene. It was called Valentine's Day. I didn't quite understand it all, there was something about couples waiting a really long time to eat over-priced mass-produced food in poorly lit group dining areas. But there was also something about children decorating boxes and exchanging pieces of paper with insincere sentiments and licensed characters on them. In Basic Rover Operations 101, we learned often the design of the rover itself is a product of the environment it is created for. This form-following-function design philosophy was illustrated with the robust rover used by the Radicaliens of Altair VII. This rover was created to help the Radicaliens safely traverse the scarmellon plains (which are infamously infested with the dangerous scuttering snapplegators.) The high ground clearance, armored heavy-weight wheels, and reinforced hull all serve to protect the occupants from dangers below. Even the colors and patterning were designed to mellow out those pesky snapplegators to reduce instances of attack. Technology Ambassadors from the SquirrelTron faction demonstrated the awesome power of the Atomic Acorn fuel cell that they have been developing. They brought a customized light-weight demonstration rover, based on a highly modified 3032 FURD* spacecoupe. To illustrate her point we were treated to a custom rover she had built (with the help of Theodore Q. Spacepant's custom rover shop, of course). Trina explained that the rover was modeled after custom vehicles modified in the Bosozoku style.
