My first Wandle artwork, the original pair of Wandle Wardrobe quilts, on display at the UK Rivers Summit yesterday at Morden Hall. It was wonderful to see so many people from different organisations gathered together (right next to the Wandle!) to discuss the state of the nation’s rivers, sharing expertise and possible solutions to big and urgent problems. As an individual, problems like water pollution feel insurmountable and it’s easy to feel powerless. But there are so many people committed to making things better, whether they are trying to impact politics on a national scale or just look after their favourite bit of wild space. Rivers run through communities, and the vast majority of those communities are rightly riled up. It’s a no-brainer really, who in their right mind is going to say “oh no actually I want more turds in my drinking water”? It seems madly dystopian that we have to campaign for clean drinking water in the U.K. in 2024, but here we are. There are some wonderful walk and talks to choose from this weekend - both new and established! The King George’s Park walk and talk launches this Saturday in Wandsworth. They will meet by the park stand on the corner of Neville Gill Close and Buckhold Road (near Southside shopping Centre) just before 10.30am. From there, you should be able to see the Walk and Talk banner attached to the railings and the volunteers waiting to welcome you! Maggie May, the fundraising manager of WPCC, will show Wimbledon Common And Village Walk & Talk some of their unique area whilst explaining the 4 stages of heathland growth and wildlife found on the Common. There will be complimentary refreshments at the Information Centre where Maggie will explain about Big Give week, where all donations will be doubled. This walk and talk group meet by the Wimbledon War Memorial at 10.30am. The Wimbledon Park Walk and Talk will meet at 10.30 am in front of the café in Wimbledon Park, near the Walk and Talk banner on the front of the tennis courts. They have a special treat this week; they will be walking through the park to Wimbledon Tennis to enjoy tea and coffees in the wingfield cafe with the compliments of the AELTC. More fabulous #WalkandTalk photos from last Saturday’s walks. Thank you to the Tooting Common Walk and Talk who were warmly welcomed by Belmont Bowls on their Open Day, for tea, cake and a bowling lesson - great photos of them in action! Since their initial visit last year, three of the walkers have become keen members and play competitively, so a great example of community partnership. A lovely photo of the Morden walkers and talkers, some of the wildlife spotted on the Colliers Wood walk and the Pollards Hill group enjoying each others company laughing and chatting as they walked - thank you all. The walks are very varied but with a few important elements in common - they always start in the same places every Saturday at 10.30am and they are always free and welcoming to all, so if you’re wondering whether they might be for you, there’s no better time to try one than now. There are currently 7 walks to choose from in South West London with all locations listed on our website - link in bio. You can go along to any of the walks - try a new one each week or stick to your most local one, the choice is yours.
