It's the Denver City Cable Railway Building! The Denver City Cable Railway Company started in 1871 as the Denver Horse Railroad Company. The first track was built along Larimer and Champa streets with horse pulled cars. By 1888, the company began investing in cable cars and this building, at 1201 Eighteenth Street, was built in 1889 as the headquarters and wheelhouse for the new system of cable cars. After the Denver City Cable Railway Company went bankrupt a decade later, the building housed Morse Brothers Machinery and the S.H. Supply Company. After the building was saved from demolition in 1973, The Old Spaghetti Warehouse rented the building for 45 years. It is currently an indoor mini-golf course, restaurant and bar. #MollyBrownHouseMuseum #HistoricDenver #HD50 #Building #Architecture #History

The Moffatt Mansion! The land at 8th and Grant was purchased by David H. Moffat in 1904 and construction began somewhere in between in 1908-1910 on the home. Ornate details in the home included a $25,000 Tiffany stained glass window in the front foyer. David Moffat would never live a day in the house however, as he died in New York in 1911 shortly before it was completed. It is for him that the Moffat Tunnel is posthumously named as he was determined to connect Denver to Salt Lake City straight through the mountains. The AHEPA group intended to tear down the Moffat mansion to facilitate the sale of the property. Many in Denver fought for its preservation, including a fledgling Historic Denver, who worked with the City to successfully obtain a landmark designation. The demolition of the Moffat Mansion was tied up in courts for several years, but eventually the AHEPA group won the right to tear it down. What buildings in Denver do you wish still existed? #MollyBrownHouseMuseum #HistoricDenver #HD50

🙈😋 #denver #colorado #milehighcity #denvercolorado #denverphotography #denvercity #rockymountains #riversidepark #statecapitolbuilding #mollybrownhousemuseum #mallstreet #travelphotograph #travelgram #traveltheworld #travelphotography #flightbackhome #sunnyday #viewpoint #bestview #zwischenstopp #plushiesontour #plushieslife #plushiesofinstagram

I definitely did not expect to experience this in Denver. I got to visit the house of Margaret Brown (1867-1932). Posthumously, she is often referred to as the ‘Unsinkable Molly Brown’. She was one of the survivors of the sinking of the RMS Titanic on its maiden voyage on April 15, 1912. In the 1997 blockbuster movie “Titanic”, Molly Brown was played by the legendary Kathy Bates. The role was originally offered to Reba McEntire but she had to turn it down due to scheduling conflicts. Denver, Colorado, USA. Jul 2023 🇺🇸🚢

Happy #HistoricPreservationMonth! Built in 1889, The Molly Brown House is a unique blend of Queen Anne Victorian 🔴 and Richardsonian Romanesque 🔵 (say that 5 times fast!) features. Castle Rock rhyolite was used for the walls of the house, and Manitou sandstone was used for the balustrade and accents. On April 29, 1912, Margaret arrived back in Denver, having stayed in New York, having remained in New York for several days ensuring that survivors were taken care of. When she arrived in Denver, she stayed in a suite at the Brown Palace Hotel and fielded many requests for interviews about what had happened. When asked about her own efforts aboard the Titanic she responded, "As I went on deck [when] the boats were being lowered, I found many opportunities to be useful and I was glad to be. The less you think of yourself at such times, the better off you are." #MollyBrownHouseMuseum #Unsinkable #BrownPalace #Denver #Local #Colorado #Titanic

Votes for Women to the Rescue. Woman's Journal. April 27, 1912. Text: "When women cannot vote the ship of state is like the steamship "Titanic" with only half enough lifeboats" In 1912, the loss of so many lives of men on the Titanic created a debate between feminists, suffragists and anti-suffragists about the righteousness of women and children first in lifeboats. Many anti-suffragists used this event to suggest that giving women the right to vote would be the end of chivalry. Suffragist rebutted this claim saying that women can also be chivalrous, as proven by the efforts of Margaret Brown in the lifeboats and that social issues are intrinsically women's issues. Credit: Schlesinger Library, Radcliffe Institute, Harvard University, Cambridge, Mass. #MollyBrownHouseMuseum #Titanic #Suffrage #SteadfastSuffragists #MuseumFromHome #ThisIsPreservation #HistoricDenver #1912

Stephanie, our curator and Heather, our Director of Learning and Engagement were so honored and excited to meet Robert Ballard last month when he was in Denver! In exchange for searching for two sunken navy submarines, the Navy allowed Ballard to use Argo, an unmanned deep sea camera sled to search for the Titanic. After locating the debris trail of the imploded submarines, Ballard used the Argo to sweep the floor for the debris trail from the Titanic. On September 1, 1985, they discovered the boiler of the Titanic laying 14,000 below the surface of the water on the ocean floor. #MollyBrownHouseMuseum #TitanicHistory #Titanic #Titanic1912 #HistoricDenver

Detached rusticles below port side anchor of the Titanic. Lori Johnston, RMS Titanic Expedition 2003, NOAA-OE. The Titanic lies at 3,800 meters or about 12,500 feet on the ocean floor. This area of the ocean is known as the Bathyal zone. The deterioration of the Titanic is a natural process. Although salinity plays a factor in the dissolving of metals, the Titanic is being dissolved by a microbe called Halomonas titanicae. This bacteria, found in deep sea environments, eats wrought iron, forming rusticles, the rust icicle-like structures found on the Titanic. “In 1995, I was predicting that Titanic had another 30 years,” Henrietta Mann, one of the researchers who studied the bacteria, said. “But I think it’s deteriorating much faster than that now. Perhaps if we get another 15 to 20 years out of it, we’re doing good … eventually there will be nothing left but a rust stain.” #Titanic #Rusticles #TitanicToday #RMSTitanic #MollyBrownHouseMuseum

On this day... April 20, 1914 An attack on the striking coal miners and their families by the Colorado National Guard and Colorado Fuel and Iron Company guards at Ludlow, Colorado resulted in the deaths of 25 people including 11 children. Protesting low pay and abysmal working conditions in the coalfields, the miners and their families were evicted from their houses owned by the mining company and set up tent cities. On April 20, The National Guard opened fire on the camp, soaked the tents in kerosene and set them on fire. In one cellar, 11 children and 2 women were found burned and suffocated. After the massacre, Margaret spoke out in support of striking miners and their families., even though her own money came from the work of Colorado miners. #mollybrownhousemuseum #strike #laborstrike #unions #ludlow #colorado

New York, April 1912 – To The Denver Post, Denver, Colo. – “Tell my Denver friends I’m safe,” said Mrs. James J. Brown, to a Post reporter who found her in the Carpathia’s hospital, nursing 100 hysterical women that were unable to get off the ship. “Tell them I’m crazy with grief, but that it isn’t my own grief, for my daughter Helen is safe in Paris, thank God!” These were the first words that came from the brave little woman to the outside world that was clamoring for news of the Titanic’s dead. On April 19, the Denver Post published an interview given by Margaret while she was on the Carpathia in New York City. The Carpathia docked on April 18th but Margaret spent an extra night aboard making sure that the other survivors were taken care of before she left the ship. #MollyBrownHouseMuseum #Titanic #Titanic1912

#OnThisDay... 🚢 April 15, 1912 Margaret describes the process of getting into a lifeboat... "I again looked out [of my room], and saw a man whose face was blanched, his eyes protruding, wearing the look of a haunted creature. He was gasping for breath, and in an undertone he gasped, "Get your life-saver."... I hurriedly mounted the stairs to A deck, and there I found possibly fifty passengers, all putting on their life belts. Strapping myself into mine, I afterwards was told to go up on the storm deck... On reaching the storm deck we found a number of men trying to unravel the tackle of the boats to let them down, which seemed at the time very difficult... Suddenly I saw a shadow, and a few seconds later, I was taken hold of, and with the words "You are going, too," I was dropped fully four feet into the lowering life-boat." 📷 : Lifeboat #6 including Margaret Brown and Frederick Fleet, lookout on the Titanic #MollyBrownHouseMuseum #Titanic #1912

So completely absorbed in my reading, I gave little thought to the crash that struck at my window overhead and threw me to the floor. Picking myself up I proceeded to see what the steamer had struck ... All seemed to be quietly listening, thinking nothing serious had occurred, though realizing at the time that the engines had stopped immediately after the crash and the boat was at a standstill and as there was no confusion of any kind, the book was again picked up." #MollyBrownHouseMuseum #Titanic #1912

Around April 6, 1912, Margaret's nieces, Florence and Helen Tobin, received word in a letter that Margaret would be returning to the United States on the Titanic. 🚢 After word of the sinking reached Denver, journalists speculated whether or not Margaret was on board and what her fate was. On April 16, the Denver Post cited this letter to her nieces to confirm that she was onboard. #MollyBrownHouseMuseum #Titanic #1912#History

🚢 On April 3, 1912, one week before the sailing of the Titanic, Helen Brown, Margaret's daughter, wrote a letter from Paris to her sister-in-law stating that she would not be traveling on the ship with her mother. 🚢 "Mamma almost persuaded me to make the return trip with her on this boat as a great crowd will be aboard. It is the first trip, you know, and there will be much to do away with the monotony of the ordinary trip." Eileen, Helen's sister-in-law, did not receive the letter before the news broke that the ship had sunk. 📷: Helen and Margaret Brown. 1911. #MollyBrownHouseMuseum #TitanicToday #Titanic #HeroineoftheTitanic #Titanic1912

Margaret Brown was a woman from the West, but was firmly seated in the East coast society. She would often combine her love of Western culture with her love of Eastern society. Margaret spent the most part of the 1910's in Newport, Rhode Island where she rented out a cottage known as Mon Etui. Her new friends were intrigued by the West, and Margaret loved showing the multicultural complexity of it. She decorated Mon Etui with Navajo blankets and a papier-mâché cave that delighted guests. She also would wear furs and drape them over furniture to show off her keepsakes from hunting trips with her son, Larry. Many of these were popular customs to show off her Western heritage before there was a greater awareness of wildlife preservation and the awareness cultural appropriation. #MollyBrownHouseMuseum #HistoricDenver #MonEtui #Newport #Navajo #WildlifePreservation

What is this brown tool on Margaret's vanity? 🧤 It's a glove stretcher! Glove stretchers were widely used because of the popularity of women's kid leather gloves like you can see in the second picture! These gloves were generally very tight fitting, and the wearer often needed aid from a mechanical device to put them on. The glove stretcher worked by placing the narrow end into a glove finger and then squeezing the handle, thereby expanding the two halves of the narrow end and stretching the glove finger wider apart. They were also useful in maintaining the overall shape of kid leather gloves, which when washed were prone to wrinkling and could turn quite stiff. Trivia: What type of animal do we get Kid Leather from? #MollyBrownHouseMuseum #HistoricDenver #Gloves #MuseumCollection

We're at 33rd and Decatur, the former home of Ellis Meredith. 🤩 Meredith was a journalist and fervent advocate for women’s rights. It is believed that she led Colorado's 1893 ballot initiative to grant women voting rights. In her column, A Woman’s World, she argued for women’s suffrage. 💜 After Colorado’s successful campaign, Meredith continued to be involved in politics and elections. She served as the City Election Commissioner from 1910 to 1915. ⛰️ As the move towards national women's suffrage national continued to pick up traction, Meredith joined the national movement. In 1917 she left Colorado for Washington D.C. to work at the Women’s Bureau of the Democratic Party. 🇺🇸 This was the Ellis’s family home which she purchased from her father in 1909 and lived here until moving to Washington D.C. 🏠️ #MollyBrownHouseMuseum #ElllisMeredith #DenverHistory #ColoradoHistory #Election #WomensHistoryMonth

We’re at 26th and Adams, the former home of Rachel B. Noel. Noel was the first African American member of the Denver School Board in 1965, making her the first African American woman elected to public office in Colorado. In 1968 she authored the Noel Resolution, which aimed to provide equal opportunity to Denver’s school children. When the Noel Resolution was repealed by the Denver School Board, Wilfred Keyes organized a group of parents to sue the school system. Keyes v. School District 1 was a precedent setting Supreme Court case. 🚌 In 1971, Rachel B. Noel founded the department of African American studies at Metropolitan State University, and served on their board of directors. She was the first woman to serve as Chair of the Board of Regents when she was elected in 1978. 🏛️ #MollyBrownHouseMuseum #HistoricDenver #DenverHistory #ColoradoHistory #WomensHistoryMonth

Margaret Tobin Brown wore many hats in her lifetime... Activist, Suffragist, Survivor, Humanitarian. But her roots were founded in her Irish Catholic heritage. Born to Irish immigrants, her father coming to America because of famine and unrest and her mother a descendant of fighters in the Irish Resistance, Margaret had a fighting spirit. The Irish diaspora of the 1800’s meant that 40% of the US immigrants from 1845- 1855 were coming from Ireland. The Irish population was met with discrimination and hard labor, especially in mining communities. Margaret and J. J. Brown did what they could give back to their Irish Catholic community, often by hiring other Irish Catholics for their staff. These workers were a part of the same working class that Margaret and J. J. were previously a part of, and they came from similar background; either as immigrants like their parents or were first- generation Irish American’s like themselves. Denver was a very protestant town at the time, but Margaret wanted to help the growing Irish Catholic community by helping with the founding of the Cathedral Basilica of Immaculate Conception, just two blocks from her house. The funding for this new cathedral would come from her work on The Carnival Nations, where nations from around the world would have tents set as “villages”, including Ireland. #MollyBrownHouseMuseum #HistoricDenver #WhoIsItWednesday #IrishHistory #StPatricksDay #MelodyEpperson #WomensHistoryMonth

It's a Ballot Box! National Ballot Box. Pat'd June 17, 1884. Manufactured by Amos Pettibone, Chicago. This National Ballot Box originally would have had a wood box around the glass featuring locks to secure ballots. This glass ballot jar is typical of the transparent devices used to secure paper ballots. In 1884, only women in the Wyoming Territory, Utah Territory and Washington Territory have full suffrage rights. Other states only allowed women to vote in school elections. Most states did not allow women to vote in any elections. #MollyBrownHouseMuseum #BallotBox #Vote! #HERstory #Collections #WomensHistory

Happy International Women's Day 🎉 How did women band together to change the world?🧐 The late 1800’s marked a sea change for the women’s rights movement. Tired of being treated as second class citizens, women in Colorado and beyond were taking a stand: demanding the right to vote, running for public office, and pursuing their own interests and careers outside of their homes and marriages. Always outspoken and never one to shy away from controversy, Margaret was quoted as saying “It is a mistake to think that Western women are crude and provincial. There are hundreds, thousands, of wonderfully brilliant women in Colorado. They are largely the flower of womanhood from the East, the North, the South – women who have dared leave their native homes to come out where they might expand, found new homes, enlarge their horizon.” Come learn more about Organizing Women during our Insider's Tour featuring Andrea Malcomb, Director of the Museum! Click the link in our profile for tickets! #MollyBrownHouseMuseum #InsiderTours #DenverWomen #HERStory #WomensHistoryMonth #InternationalWomensDay

While riding the train to see her folks in Denver, Leonel "Nellie" Campbell Ross O'Bryan (1857-1938), also known as Polly Pry, got offered a gig writing for the brand new "Denver Post." As a staff writer, Polly covered the arrest and trial of Alferd Packer, the struggles in the mines, the fight for women's rights, and the Mexican Revolution, among other things. Later on, she even started her own newspaper, "The Polly Pry". Her brother Charles bought this house in 1896. The 1900 census shows Nellie living in this West Highland home with her folks and both brothers. The family owned the house until 1932. #MollyBrownHouseMuseum #DenverWomen #DenverHerstory #Herstory #DenverNewspapers #Women'sHistory
