When we bought our home we had the unique opportunity that our first tour through the house was give by the daughter of the couple who custom built the home in 1966. It was really wonderful to have her tell us about the features of the home she grew up in and loved so much. To me the fact that the home still had all of its original cabinetry and colorful bathrooms was such a score. The cabinets in our kitchen are so well made and the color is just dreamy. There was no way I was going to rip them out for wood laminate when we had solid wood already installed. I wanted to refresh the space with a fun backsplash and a new countertop. I picked this patterned cement tile from @exquisitesurfaces and have ZERO regrets. I smile every time I walk into the kitchen. This is our forever home and I saw no reason to play it safe. A modern design from our Barrington collection. 🌿 Wanting a modern look to match their new extension, we designed these slab cabinets in a combination of natural wood and sage green. With the wood units handleless, we added long black handles to the tall green cabinets to add some contrast. Making the most of the high ceiling, the cabinets were designed the full height of the kitchen creating lots of storage space! We love the style here, where the scheme creates a classic mid-century look!
Open plan living at its best! The blue kitchen was mostly kept free of wall cabinets, creating an open feel that flows between the kitchen and living space. As well as the kitchen, we designed the media unit and dining table in the same mid century style. At uni tomorrow we start learning about Kitchen design. There’s a real art to designing kitchens, and all of the practicalities that come with it. However, this doesn’t mean kitchens have to be a ‘one type of design fits all’ formula. I’ve been thinking about different colours and textures we could bring into a kitchen/dining space. So created this moodboard to experiment with this thinking/try out ideas a couple of weeks ago. I’m a little obsessed with this green/yellow colour in interiors at the moment - I’m not even sure what you’d call it…?! That glossy tile & velvet against the deep earthy brown/burnt orange tiles, creates a warm, inviting finish, that’s calming but has a little vibrancy. The nickle hardware creates contrast and balances the warm tones. We spend so much time in our kitchens, why can’t they feel like a comforting space that feels a little different and exciting to be in? Function doesn’t always have to mean ‘boring & traditional’ 😜 Let me know what you think 🤘
