Fast forward to 2005, and my world had changed- I was dating a Marine, and the reality of what Memorial Day is hit a little different. When 2006 came- May found me as a Marine wife- with my husband deployed to Iraq. I remember laying in bed watching the patriotic country music countdown at night before bed, feeling the fear that one day songs like “Just a Dream” would be my life. On May 11, 2006, I met two Marines at my door- and my life has never been the same. Memorial Day should be every day, in my opinion. The Heroes that sacrifice their life to fight for the USA should be front and center- not these idolized celebrities or athletes. I’ve never been great at grieving in public or sharing my story (the anxiety of doing so with all eyes on me was too much) which I’m here to say is ok- because every grieving journey is different. Since starting Opal & Daisy, I’ve felt a special pull to memorial pieces, and I think my story is responsible for that. If you’re still reading this- thank you.
