5 THINGS TO KNOW WHEN STARTING MEDICAL SCHOOL: 1. You don’t have to study 24/7 to succeed- you do have to study, but breaks are helpful and will make you a better person and doctor in the long run 2. Google calendar is your best friend. Block out your time carefully and try to stick to it! Don’t miss those social plans once they’re in your calendar. 3. Find immediate gratification outside of school! Medicine is really hard and won’t always give you the positive reinforcement you need day-to-day. Find a hobby like running or cooking that can show you measurable change with intentional effort! 4. Don’t let your test scores define you. Put your patients first and prioritize how you make them feel and the rest will fall into place. 5. Be kind. Internal medicine physicians are the foundation of clinical care, serving and leading in every practice setting and community, caring for patients throughout their health care journey. To help improve patient access to care and strengthen the primary care workforce, we are asking Members of Congress to: 📝 Co-sponsor and pass H.R.2630/S. 652, the Safe Step Act of 2023, a bipartisan bill that would require group health plans to provide an exception process for any medication step therapy protocol to help ensure that patients can safely and efficiently access treatment. 📝Co-sponsor and pass H.R. 2389/S. 1302, the Resident Physician Shortage Reduction Act of 2023, which would gradually raise the number of Medicare-supported GME positions by 2,000 per year for seven years. 📝 Cosponsor and pass H.R. 6545, the Physician Fee Schedule Update and Improvements Act, that would raise the threshold for implementing budget neutral payment cuts from $20 million to $53 million and would provide an increased update to the threshold every five years afterwards based on the MEI. Having this time to advocate is a great first step to bringing about change in US healthcare system. Which ended up being in April of M2 because my class’ got cancelled due to covid🥲 3- first time flying a plane at AFOM101 (yes I’m in the Air Force but I’m actually afraid of heights … lol)! The instructor was so nice (he didn’t let me land bc he knew I did not have the skills but other people got to land it hahaha) - summer between M2/M3 4 - Med School Prom🥳🥰 I actually helped plan it because I am the Programs Chair of my class! It was on a yacht🤭 (I love this dress & have been looking for another event to wear it too. Cant wear it to a wedding tho bc it’s white 😂😭) 5 - first day of M3 rotations!! 6 - in Madrid during my trip to Spain in March of M3🥰 7 - first in person civilian residency interview! 8 - residency headshot 🤗 9 - AAMC specialty quiz I took at the beginning of M2! Things worked out I think 🫶🏼 10 - pics I took during M1 spring for my YouTube channel!! Photocreds @lanesager ❤️ Lots of these pics happened after I made my insta & they were big milestones so I wanted to share :) It’s been a crazy busy week coordinating graduation stuff (I am flying there w my family), my military move, buying furniture, and everything in between. April recap! 🩵🌴✨🥰🍍 April was another exciting and busy month, but there was also time for some much needed r&r🙏🏼 - wrapped up my medical school requirements and completed my last medical school rotation! - went to Hawaii with my mom (Kauai and Oahu) and had an absolutely amazing time🩵 - signed a lease for an apartment for my intern year of residency! - ate good food.. like always 🤣 - started embracing the local nature around my parent’s house more and have been enjoying walking/running on the trails. I haven’t ran consistently for a looonngg time so it’s about time I do lol - wrapped up some medical school research projects that I’ve been working on/helping out with (big sigh of relief)🥹 - lots of planning for my move, residency, graduation, and life post medical school graduation😅 - went to ACP 2024 in Boston (I’m about an hour away) and got to see my PD and some of the residents + their spouses from my residency program!! 😄Went to some amazing talks on general internal medicine + gastroenterology + took lots of notes!💩 - celebrated Easter at home with my family for the first time in literally years - cuddled with my cat a lot😻 - was home for my parents 36th wedding anniversary (they dated for 4 years before) & was their DD more than once 😅😂😂 - got super excited about graduation week (which is next week !!!!) and can’t wait to celebrate with my friends and family 💖💖💖 I hope you had an amazing April! May is going to be an insane month (in the best way). It’s not all cute scrubs & aesthetic coffee shops It’s not easy, no one’s life is as it seems, we all struggle, life happens during it… it’s a GRIND. These pictures that I documented on Snapchat (lol) and only shared with my VERY close friends throughout medical school are only a FRACTION of the times I felt overwhelmed, lost, alone, stressed out, heartbroken, like I didn’t belong at med school or in friend groups, the list goes on… Also as you can see, I missed my college graduation bc of covid and then I had 2 exams the week it was rescheduled 😅 Even as someone who has done a good job at getting sleep, eating healthy, working out consistently, staying in touch w family/friends - I still had these feelings and days. As I start the next chapter of my medical career, I don’t want to downplay, forget, minimize, or dismiss any of my past struggles and challenges. Because that version of me in the moment was doing everything she could to get through it, to overcome those problems & setbacks. I refuse to discredit her and the strength & courage she displayed in the moments where she felt truly tested. I also want to remember my support system that got me through, because I would be nothing without them. 🚨🚨🚨MORAL OF THE STORY: Med school isn’t easy or perfect. But it’s worth it. We all struggle.
