Drying events are predicted to occur more often in the tropics due to climate change, so scientists are concerned about how tropical forest belowground carbon pools will respond. A field team in Panama installed a series of structures to prevent up to 70% of the rain from reaching the ground in patches of forest in four different sites with varying rainfall and soil fertility levels. They intended to simulate the effects of chronic drying when forests experience reductions in rainfall throughout the wet season or over the entire year. They found that the response varied according to soil fertility: the most fertile soils had large losses of soil carbon with drying, and the wettest and most infertile soil had reduced soil carbon losses. 🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳 Se predice que los eventos de sequía ocurrirán con mayor frecuencia en los trópicos debido al cambio climático, por lo que a los científicos les preocupa cómo responderán los depósitos de carbono subterráneos de los bosques tropicales. Last Tuesday, May 7th, the almost-entire Mamoní Valley Preserve Executive Team got together at the Preserve for a productive and fun “day at the office”, away from their laptops and completely disconnected, to check-up on the final remodeling stages of Casa Viva, our MVP HQs. Because the weather was perfect for a stroll, the whole group, together with Iris Nemetz, our intern and first guest at Casa Viva, went on a magnificent trek through the Continental Divide. The trek was a great opportunity to admire and stay up to date with the Mamoní Valley and its surroundings, and to get in touch with the important and sensitive work the entire Team is accomplishing in regards to forest and biodiversity conservation on site. 🌳🌳🌳🌳🌳 El pasado martes 7 de mayo, casi todo el Equipo Ejecutivo de Mamoní Valley Preserve se reunió en la Reserva para un productivo y divertido “día de oficina”, lejos de sus laptops y completamente desconectados, para revisar las etapas finales de remodelación de Casa Viva, nuestra nueva sede de MVP. Conservation managers have long prioritized the management of what are known as Umbrella Species, making them representative of other, lesser-known species, usually getting special attention from funders and authorities. However, researchers have found that focusing on the usual charismatic species, like tigers and rhinos, leads to neglect the needs of other wildlife. These non-flagship species, such as amphibians and invertebrates, might actually be better representatives of the broader biodiversity of a particular ecosystem than those considered the umbrella species. Millions of frogs 🐸 have suffered from Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, (BD), the global amphibian pandemic. Over 500 species of amphibians are suffering major population declines due to BD while there have been 90 possible extinctions and near extinctions, threatening endangered species. Now, researchers believe that a virus 🦠 may help herpetologists develop a cure: the BdDV-1, a single-stranded DNA virus 🧬 trapped within the genome of the fungus. Although this only applied to certain strains, when infected they produced fewer spores than the uninfected fungi. The next step is to see if researchers can clone and engineer this virus so that it kills BD and saves frogs 🐸 Fingers crossed! 🤞 Millones de ranas 🐸 han sufrido del Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis, (BD), la pandemia mundial de anfibios. The Mamoní Valley Preserve continues to celebrate its 20th Anniversary 🎉 and last Friday 5th we arrived at the city of Boston 🇺🇸 where 17 guests and friends, from investors to renowned scientists, gathered at the beautiful Quin House, for a complete presentation of the Preserve. As part of the MVP representatives were board members, Guillermo Söhnlein, Ben Goulet-Scott, David Meerman Scott, Roberto Saint-Malo and Sean Po. MVP’s CEO, Ailene De Icaza Ordas and Development Director, Daniel Sanhueza were also present at the Boston event. In the lowland forest of El Impenetrable National Park in northern Argentina 🇦🇷 lies the Gran Chaco biome 🌳🌳🌳, where just 10 jaguars remain, but no female jaguars. Lianas are those long-stemmed woody vines that climb up trees. They compete aggressively with other plants for nutrients, water and sunlight, but also add tasty fruits for animals and have a strong pollination system that provides for insects, so they increase biodiversity. Studies show that forest disturbance and climate change are driving lianas’ dominance over trees in a way that could intensify harm to forest recovery and carbon drawdown. We should not aim to eliminate lianas from forests, but rather to maintain a balance between lianas and trees that allows for both forest recovery and biodiversity conservation. Did you know that fallen leaves help trees grow naturally?🍁 Scientists believed that trees could be reutilizing the nutrients in litterfall to continue growing in poor-quality ground, so they worked in a tropical forest in Panama for nearly two decades. They took away dead leaves and plant material from some areas and put more in others. Some trees got less litter than usual, while others got more. A number of studies have documented the benefits of introducing new species in new ecosystems. Some non-native species provide habitat and food for native animals and plants, and introduced species can promote diversity by acting like ecosystem engineers, reworking their new habitat. Others can pollinate plants, or help restore native ecosystems on degraded land. However, introduced species can, in some cases, become dangerous invaders, destroyers of their new homes. 🦇 Bats are weird and wonderful creatures. They’re the only mammals that can truly fly, and are the group that has developed echolocation or “seeing with sound” to its most advanced level. But globally, around a quarter of bat species are threatened by factors including habitat loss, roost destruction, hunting and climate change. However, people have found effective ways of conserving these creatures.
